Nigerian PHD Students In The USA, How Do You Survive On A $1500/month Stipend? by HerrFrank(op): 1:29pm On Oct 08, 2024
I am currently in the UK working and earning roughly 1800 pounds per month after tax. I am considering doing a PHD in the USA but my greatest fear is how do I cope with a $1500 per month stipend? Can you do additional jobs legally? Here in the UK, one struggles to live comfortably on 1800 pounds due to the current inflation crisis (which is global by the way). Please brethren, help a brother out.

PS: Married with a 13 months old child.

You're "struggling to live comfortably" with £1800 per month. That's in addition to security, available light, good health care services, etc.

Some people are ungrateful.

Surviving on 1500 depends on the rental costs in the state you're going to.
Since your PhD is fully funded then you would likely have restrictions on working and how many hours. To get funding you might have teaching or research requirements on campus.

Pls find out how many hours you can work as a PhD and the restrictions.

Then if you move with your wife and kids you need to know your wife can not legally work on F2 visa so unless she changes status and becomes an F1 student as well then at least that can be added in come.

$1500 is small however if your rent is $600 per month for 1bed flat then, other expenses are typically not to high.
Remember your wife can change status from F2 to F1 in the US. And in looking for schools she can pick part time and community colleges whose fees are way cheaper and flexible. With this she can get part time work to help the family.

You'll be fine

Yes he's struggling for his situation.
.his rent is likely 750-1000 . Then you'll pay gas, electricity and council tax separately.Depending on season that can be up to 300 . Then food + household 200-300.
Transport maybe another 100 and more.
Phone bill 30-50 per month. Then they have a baby who will chop plenty money.
With a 1yr old his wife may not be able to work because childcare will take almost all their salary

All these analysis is a prove he is living large, at least getting satisfaction from his expenses. And I am very much sure that the kind of satisfaction he got from those expenses you stated can never be gotten here

At least, he should be grateful that he's better off than a million folds

Oh pleaseee, can you get a grip on yourself??! Satisfaction and comfort is relative. The young man is just trying to find out how he can cope with the new realities he may face as a family man running his PhD in the US..

Where did "ungratefulness" jump out from? Christ!!! If you cannot offer anything helpful, why not chill and let others who can..

You are better off upskilling here in the UK to earn better within in-demand fields and when eligible to pay UK local fees, you run your doctorate program part time.
