I recently discovered my birth certificate bears a different name from the names I normally use and the name doesn't appear in any of my documents, please how do I rectify this

You are older than 18 years. Therefore, the National Population Commission will not issue you a birth certificate. Instead of a birth certificate, you will be given an attestation of birth. Note that this attestation of birth letter is completely equal to a birth certificate and carries the same legal weight both in Nigeria and when using it overseas. To get this attestation of birth letter from the NPC, you must first process and present a court affidavit attesting to your date of birth and other personal details, and the affidavit must have a declarant who will be either your father or an older male relative (brother or uncle).

REQUIREMENTS FOR PROCESSING A BIRTH ATTESTATION LETTER
Age declaration affidavit (from High Court). This affidavit must contain the details of both your place of birth and date of birth, the details of your parents and their place of origin, and your home address. Your passport photograph must be attached to the affidavit and the age declaration must also be duly stamped or endorsed by the Commissioner for Oaths.

National Identification Number (NIN).

2 recent passport photographs.

Non-refundable application fee (₦3,000).

Visit the National Population Commission located in the local government secretariat of the State where you reside. When you get to the NPC office, you will be given a form to fill in for your attestation of birth letter.

Thankfully, the National Population Commission (NPC) offers a convenient online portal to complete the process. Visit the NPC website (https://nationalpopulation.gov.ng/) (https://attestation.nationalpopulation.gov.ng/welcome) and navigate to the “Services” section and choose “Birth Attestation.” Click agree below the page and proceed to enter your email address in the provided space and make the online payment of ₦3,000 using the provided secure payment gateway. You’ll receive a confirmation and reference number via email.

Once payment is confirmed, proceed to fill out the online registration form. This includes applicant details, parent/guardian information, hospital/clinic details, and document uploads as mentioned previously.

Carefully review every information and upload for accuracy. Submit the application after confirmation.


Use the reference number to track your application status. Upon completion, you’ll be notified and can download your official birth attestation from your NPC account.

Please ensure a stable internet connection throughout the process. Also, use high-quality scans of documents for clear upload. Alongside, please keep a copy of the reference number for future reference. If you encounter any difficulties, consider reaching out to the NPC through their contact information available on the website.

From my experience you will need the followings;

NIN Slip
Local Government of origin
Birth Certificate OR (Affidavit of statutory declaration of Age)

Bring the originals of the above
documents.

Then you will printout

Application Form
Approval Form
Appointment Slip

That's all. You can photocopy it too,should they need it. Because the will be taking a copy of this three,while the rest is for confirmation,and will be returned to you.

Pls house , I did my capturing at ikorodu passport office precisely 2 month 3 days today, and each time I track always on pending.
Someone suggested that it might be ready and not updating their website that I should go there. I did the application myself o.
What's your advice before leaving ajah to ikorodu.

To rectify this, apply for a name change through the Federal Ministry of Interior and provide a strong reason(s) for the change, such as a court order.
After the approval of your application, you must present the change of name certificate to the relevant government organizations, such as the National Population Commission and the Ministry of Education. These organizations will update your name on all your official documents to reflect the alteration.

thank you boss, but I've got a quick question no vex, that particular name doesn't appear in any of my documents all my documents bears my first name, middle name and surname as I bear them, but that name only appears in my birth certificate, it's my father's first name my surname and first name is correct on d birth certificate just that my father name wey de carry put there,

You don't have to travel to get it,you can call a family member to head down to the local government of your town,the will issue to him or her on your behalf.

Please make sure the name arrangements are good. Same way it will be in your passport.

For your birth certificate,walk in to any NPC office in your current state of residence,and process that.

Re print those documents,and go for your Biometric capture,if you have lost documents you need to present,process it and head out asap for capturing.

The last time I checked, applicant applying for Nigerian passport renewal is not required to present a copy of his or her birth certificate. Perhaps it is a new requirement for passport renewal application.
The last time I checked, these're the requirements for Nigerian passport renewal:
Application letter.
Passport booklet.
Photocopy of data page age of passport.
Acknowledgement slip and evidence of payment.
2 passport photographs.

The only document having a different arrangement is the certificate of origin, and it's because I sent a family member to get it for me. Do I have to get a new one?

The original copy of your LGA identification or State of Origin Certificate is for sighting on the day of appointment. If you reside in Lagos, visit your State's liaison office to apply for a new State of Origin Certificate.
