Congratulations bro.

But you are not doing better than the average 'mayguard' in Nigeria.

Also, the minimum wage of 70k is basic salary. Other allowances bring it up to 110k. @femi4 and co, take note.
What allowances? How many people are receiving the minimum wage in Nigeria. Even corp members were not paid last month. Don't deceive yourself, he's doing better than an average Nigerian, fuel price isn't stable in Nigeria. Those with cars can't drive, those driving are driving on a bad road. No tap water, power is irregular and unaffordable.

He goes home with nothing less than £2000 after tax in a month and can conveniently save £500 each month. Not considering those doing 2 jobs in this analysis

Mind you, that's African fish imported into the UK. Their home grown food and fruits are cheaper.

This post is in response to the thread below about the high cost of fish in Nigeria. You can find the thread here
https://www.nairaland.com/8225493/see-what-experience-market-woman/1#132221604

Here are some fishes i bought fot just 12 pounds. They are 8 in number. I bought it alongside grinded ogbonno. You can see the grounded ogbonno in the transparent pack that cost about 4 pounds.

So i ended up spending 16.17 pounds in this African shop i went to. I also attached the receipt.

Guess what? The 8 fishes, i was holding one when i took d pix.. i got for 12 pounds is just an hour wage rate. This is what i am paid in just one our of working.

While converting the prices to Naira might be expensive the actual reality is how much effort is put to achieve that earning putting time factor into consideration.
Sorry bro. This is not to insult you. We all learn everyday and English is not our papa language.
As long as those fish are the same specie the English man calls them fish. (English sometimes is confusing) Even if they are in thousands as long as they are same specie they are all fish. Therefore, you bought fish and not fishes.
They can only be fishes when they are a combination of Titus, tylapia, or any other species.
Remain blessed and much love.

It really sounds odd to the ear to hear "I bought seven fish today at the market" but this is what the language owner wants us to say. grin

The hourly minimum wage in Nigeria stands at $0.22, a stark contrast to the US’s hourly minimum wage of $12.
That is 60 times more!

The naira equivalent of the monthly minimum wage in the US is about 1.8million naira as against the miserly 30,000 naira in Nigeria

While certain African foods can be quite expensive, they are often consumed less frequently. Conversely, non-African foods such as Milk and Chicken are relatively affordable, especially when viewed in light of a minimum wage comparison.

Fuel pricing further emphasizes this disparity. In the US, fuel costs approximately $1.024 per litre, which roughly translates to around 900 Naira. On the contrary, fuel in Nigeria is priced at 617 Naira. Despite the higher fuel cost in the US, when aligning it with monthly minimum wages, a significant

let me break down the comparative analysis step by step:

**Comparative Analysis of Fuel Prices and Minimum Wages: US vs. Nigeria**

**Fuel Price Ratio:

We're looking at how much it costs to buy fuel compared to how much people earn as minimum wage in the US and Nigeria.

**Comparative Analysis of Fuel Prices and Minimum Wages: US vs. Nigeria**

**Fuel Price Ratio:**
In the United States, the cost of fuel stands at approximately $1.024 per litre, equivalent to approximately 900 Naira based on the exchange rate of 1 USD to 900 NGN. In Nigeria, the fuel price is around 617 Naira per litre.

**Minimum Wage Comparison:**
Comparing minimum wages, the United States boasts an hourly minimum wage of $12, while Nigeria's hourly minimum wage is approximately $0.22, or 188 Naira.

**Calculating Proportions:**
In the United States, the proportion of the hourly minimum wage required to purchase fuel is computed as follows:
Fuel Price / Hourly Minimum Wage = $1.024 / $12 ≈ 0.085 (or 8.5%)

In Nigeria, the proportion of the hourly minimum wage expended on fuel translates as:
Fuel Price / Hourly Minimum Wage = 617 Naira / 188 Naira ≈ 3.28 (or 328%)

Interpretation:
The analysis underscores a stark contrast between the two countries. In the United States, fuel costs account for roughly 8.5% of the hourly minimum wage, reflecting a moderate impact on individuals’ budgets. This indicates that someone earning the minimum wage in the US can reasonably expect to allocate a relatively small portion of their earnings to cover fuel expenses.

In contrast, the situation in Nigeria portrays a significantly higher proportion, with fuel costs amounting to an astonishing 328% of the hourly minimum wage. To put it simply, someone earning the minimum wage in Nigeria has to dedicate more than three times their hourly wage solely to afford the same amount of fuel. This glaring difference underscores the disparity in the purchasing power of individuals between the two countries.

This discrepancy in the proportions of 328% and 8.5% serves as a vivid representation of the financial challenges faced by individuals in Nigeria when it comes to covering fuel expenses. Such a stark difference in the burden of fuel costs relative to earnings highlights the urgency of addressing the affordability of fuel in Nigeria and seeking ways to mitigate this substantial economic discrepancy.

The analysis serves as a foundation for comprehending the intricate relationship between fuel prices, minimum wages, and their consequential effects on individuals’ economic well-being. It highlights the pertinent consideration that the affordability of fuel extends beyond its nominal price, as it intersects with the earning capacity of individuals within each respective nation.

Mind you, that's African fish imported into the UK. Their home grown food and fruits are cheaper.
He is surely doing better than the average Nigerian on minimum wage like him but from his earnings, you didnt ask him about taxes. On £12 per hour and 10 hour work, he makes £120 per day. For even a 5 day work week, that is £600 per week. For a 4 week month, he earns £2400 per month and in 12 months, he earns £28,800 in a year.

On that amount, he pays 20% income tax, outside other taxes such as insurance, health, municipal, but let's stay with income tax; 20% is £5760.

Then, let us talk about rent, If he stays anywhere around London where accomodation is expensive, a studio apartment - what we call bedsitter here, is around £1000/1200 monthly in safe locations, if we go with the lower rent, annually he pays £12,000

Then utility bills will come in; power, internet, and maybe small groceries. Let's just put £150 on that per month, that's £1800 annually.

Now to the issue of transport and feeding, give or take, if he manages well, £200 should cover that monthly, implying that in one year, he would have spent £2400 on transport and food.

So what do we have left, outside other important necessities.
We have £28,800 - (£5760+£12,000+£1800+£2400) = £6840.

That's probably the highest he would save after a year's work if he us being very frugal. Unfortunately, that money can barely sustain him for 6 months if he is out of a work, in the UK where you rarely find anyone to aid or assist you, unlike here in Nigeria.

While he would obviously have a better sense of living in the UK than in Nigeria, he may end up frustrated after 2 to 3 years of staying within the same economic situation, which is not any different from what he ran away from.
