Our Generation Has Failed Nigeria – Bauchi Ex-Governor, Mohammed Abubakar by JAOS(op): 6:50am On Oct 11, 2024
A former governor of Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar, has called on Nigerian youths to rise up and take up the responsibility for salvaging the country.

Mohammed, who spoke on Tuesday at the First Bauchi SDGs Youth Summit 2024, declared that his generation and its set of leaders, including himself, have failed to provide Nigerians with the kind of leadership they deserve.

“My generation has failed. My generation appears not to have the answers anymore.

“Allah loves Nigeria. That is why every chance he gives to my generation, we take Nigeria to the precipice, and Allah will bring it back. We will take over again and bring it to the precipice, which means doing one thing the same way and expecting a different result. Which some people say is the definition of madness,” he stated.

The Bauchi ex-governor, while disclosing that his investments on the youth populace during his administration were deliberate, noted further, “I deliberately populated my executive council with the youth, and in doing that, I did not pick and choose the sons or daughters of the big shots. I picked youth for their abilities to perform and I encouraged them, knowing fully well that one day, whether I like it or not, I have to quit the stage, and the youths will take over.”

Mohammed warned that leaders should be wary of the future of the country when the youths are not trained to be ready for the leadership roles ahead of them.

Continuing, he stressed that with poor investment on youths, their readiness for the leadership role of the future of the country is already at stake.

“If we do not train them today, we can imagine what is going to happen when the time comes for us to leave the stage and allow them to take over. We will have people who are not ready for the leadership roles ahead of them,” Mohammed maintained.

He called on the youths to brace up for the challenge and change the country’s present narrative.

Also, speaking at the occasion, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Salis Gamawa, advised the youths to look for opportunities to innovate and make the difference in the socio-economic narrative of the country instead of searching for non-existent white-collar jobs.

According to Gamawa, the system has changed, and the youths also have to change their ways of thinking.

The commissioner who observed that some youths are just naysayers of the government and anyone occupying position of leadership cautioned that “life is a project and the best thing you can do to yourself is to project a better image of yourself. Where we are lacking greatly as young people, we need to identify them to know what it really means to be a leader.”

Gamawa clarified, “To mean a leader is not about the executive governor. It is not about the commissioner. It is not about anything but yourself.”

Thus, he advised that youths must first learn how to correctly and positively  lead themselves as individuals before thinking of leading others.

Arewa PUNCH further reports that the summit was attended by several youths from across the region and women, including students from secondary and tertiary institutions.

This call made by the ex-governor is both a challenge and a paradox. While he acknowledges the failings of his generation, the systemic barriers created by these very leaders often limit young people’s access to real power and leadership development opportunities.
We seriously need to invest and practice good leadership in our country as it is easy to predict the future by looking at the current leadership practices marred with deceit, corruption, tribal and religious sentiments, and other evidence of a failed society.

Structural issues, such as unemployment and political exclusion, require more than personal change or entrepreneurial spirit; we demand a more intentional overhaul of the system to truly prepare us for leadership roles to better our nation.

Na Una still dey fight for Nigeria, for me my own is to divide Nigeria into different countries, people like Wike and Tinubu are just one part of the problem of Nigeria...

When you look at the number of people who still support them from a certain region, to me that is a bigger problem that has to do with ideology and for me is one major reason to divide the country, you will actually realize that those men are in power today because of those kind of people.

Our regional ideologies are not the same, we are not aiming for the same thing, I will rather share country with people that share the same ideology with me so that we can have a common goal, Nigeria is mainly where it is today because most regions don't want the same thing

The only sensible politician being honest enough to admit his flaws, you stand a greater chance of being forgiven after you have paid some deadly price for your wickedness and stupidity as a former leader.

This is what Terrorist Buhari, Tinubu, Remi Tinubu, Aisha Buhari, Nyesome Wike, Hopeless Uzodinma, Orji Uzo Kalu, Chimaraoke Nnamani, etc ought to be telling Nigerians not going about asking Nigerians to pray for senseless criminals calling themselves leaders angry

Nigeria can work. We just need to hold leaders accountable. People should have the mind to go after leaders that misuse office. By the time many of them kpai follow body one by one, any one wey enter position go use am well. Nigerian leaders do not fear the people they serve that's why they rule recklessly. Because them feel say nothing go happen. We need to instill fear in the hearts of Nigerian leaders.

You did not lie. Our parents generation failed this country. They enjoyed & benefited from Nigeria at its best but left it in shambles. Our founding fathers will be very disappointed with how Nigeria has turned out.
A friend of mine will say the person who will fix Nigeria has not yet been given birth to..

He hit the nail on the head ... confessed his generation has failed Nigeria ... and is imploring the youths to rise up and take control of the country ...to have a revolution. He had done his part while in office .... as in putting youths in position of power to have a smooth transition. What is wrong in what he is saying? Is breaking the power structure a bad thing? How dumb can we be to keep reelecting the aged? But like he said .... there will be a problem since the youths were not groomed to manage. We should be following Burkina Faso ...Niger ...Mali but instead we condemn them while touting democracy. We need a change. .. the youths need to get together and kick all the aged politicians out of office or we will continue to suffer.

United we stand .... divided we fall.

I have little to no respect for the older generations because you guys are indeed failures.

After enjoying free education, oil boom, cocoa money, relatively safe society & the likes, you all decided to use & abuse these privileges, leaving barely nothing for the future generations, you now what the current generation to clean up your mess.

E no go better for you baby boomers!

Una no go die better!

Your children & children children will end up useless & worthless to you all!

You all will die painful & sorrowful death in your old age!

Imagine how you lots have made these current generations (except generations z) seem useless & redundant.

I feel like kicking you old fools!
