Why Enugu Government Imposed Tax On Dead Bodies – Revenue Board by adenigga(op): 8:26am On Oct 13, 2024
The Enugu State Government says the tax it imposed on corpses in mortuaries across the state was not spurred by a revenue generation drive.

The Executive Chairman of Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), Mr Emmanuel Nnamani, said this while reacting to the Mortuary Tax circular addressed to all the Mortuary Attendants.

According to the circular, ESIRS in line with the provisions of section 34 of the Birth, Deaths and Burials Law Cap 15 Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004, approved the implementation of the Mortuary tax.

“The sum of N40.00 only is to be paid by owners of a corpse once it was not buried within twenty-four hours. The amount continues to count daily.

“Kindly ensure that owners of corpses make the payments before collection of the corpses for burial and then remit same to the ESIRS in any commercial bank under the mortuary tax in Enugu State IGR Account,” the circular said.

Reacting, Nnamani said that the tax was not new to the state, adding that it was within the Enugu State Mortuary Tax Law which had been in existence for years.

According to him, the amount to pay as the mortuary tax was N40 daily, not N40,000.

“It is an indirect tax paid by mortuary owners, not deceased family and it is just N40, not N40,000. Since its introduction, nobody has been denied burying their dead ones.

“It means that if the corpse stays in the mortuary for 100 days, the mortuary is expected to pay to the state a sum of N4,000.

“The tax is not meant to generate revenue but to discourage people from taking their dead ones to the mortuary all the time,” Nnamani stressed.

OK I get it now. Let the dead bury the dead and let the living be kind on to each other.

You mean Enugu state generates money from the dead?

40 naira daily cannot discourage the people from leaving the dead bodies in the mortuary

Just call a spade by its name, na tax you need and I know it will soon increase to the amount una want, this is just to test the reaction of the Enugu people

Re: Why Enugu Government Imposed Tax On Dead Bodies – Revenue Board by Mindlog:
Who among the staff of Enugu State Internal Revenue Service would gather liver to go audit corpses in different mortuaties in the state, to make sure of accurate remittance?

This is the handiwork of greedy politicians, their house of assembly should repeal that useless law.

They must say something to justify their actions. They can't agree to have made a mistake. If the mortuary owners pays, who will the person collect the money from? The relatives of the dead will pay directly to the mortuary owners while the mortuary owners pay to the government. More tax to the living.

How is it their business where people choose to keep their deceased? Are the private morgue complaining of inadequate space or anything whatsoever. It would have made more sense if it's a government owned morgue that is imposing this tax .

You bitter jobless man, go and learn internet marketing or graphic design etc. Instead of living on peanut handout paid to you by those who genuinely hate and turned your life upside-down, you operate a known controversial monica on here which if reverse was the case, someone perhaps from the same tribe you were paid to hate would have linked you up and uplift you from your devastating pitiful life of misery and obscurity.

STOP generalizing and complicating a common issue, for your information, this is a decision made by the state govt that the netzines on here is opposing but you who is bile driven quickly jumped in trying to misconstrue facts.
GET A LIFE

As done in the UK

SEE THE concept of death duties.

States have to raise money. Allawee from abuja is not enough, and it takes time to develop natural resources, so taxes it is

If Lagos government start this or any state in the West start the same thing you will see igbo calling it over tax that's responsible for the high IGR of south west.

Even with taxing dead bodies Enugu government can't surpass Osun state in IGR generation, this should show you the level of productivity going on in each region.

I don't see it that way. Guess it's to discourage those who keep them for so long. Though I see the "within 24-hours" clause as too short.

As in if the Corpse were to be buried within 24-hours, why take them to mortuary in the first place. Maximum of 1-month before taxing would have made more sense to me.
