Macron and Netanyahu clash over France’s call for immediate ceasefires


Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and French President Emmanuel Macron have traded words in a phone call as France repeats its calls for immediate ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon.

A readout of a call between the two leaders, issued by Israel, said Netanyahu had told Macron Israel was “working against the terrorist organisation Hezbollah” so it can no longer threaten its citizens on the northern border.

“The Prime Minister made clear Israel will not accept any arrangement that would not allow this”, the statement reads.

The two leaders have been at odds since Macron said last week the only way to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and between Israel and Hezbollah was to halt the sale of weapons.

Netanyahu lashed out at Macron last week after the French president called publically for a ban on arms sales to Israel, comments which the Israeli PM called a “disgrace”. Macron announced plans to hold an international conference on Lebanon, set for this month.

“Mr. Netanyahu must not forget that his country was created by a decision of the UN,” Macron told his weekly cabinet meeting, referring to the resolution adopted in November 1947 by the United Nations General Assembly on the plan to partition Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state.

“Therefore this is not the time to disregard the decisions of the UN”, Macron added.
