Sorry about your denial. More funding will help. Taking all your old passports with you also. Also, use the 'why were you denied' section of your next ds 160 to state the things that you have changed for better in your profile. Your age tells a lot too. Coming back for NYSC too sounds to me like a red flag, because, who comes back from the US to finish up their NYSC? At the point of your program completion, what is normal is that some organization is waiting for you to start working with them.

I wish you the best in your next application.
Thank you very much for the suggestions! Hopefully, I regain the scholarship, and I'll be sure to have the old passport handy. But I only said NYSC because I thought you have to complete it first before you can be employed at a governmental organization like a public hospital, or have the rules changed? Also, are you saying if I get the scholarship again, I should mention that in the DS160?

Good evening everyone, please I need your kindly advice, I was given admission for fall this year but without funding so I defer to fall next year, but the professor I intend to work with message me now if I could make it for Spring 2025 and if visa will be ready by mid January
Please, if the offer is confirmed, please take it as it isn't late although I understand the change in the visa application system is messing up things but never say never.

Hi potken

On your next interview, stop focusing on the already frustrated and annoyed visa officer. Her behavior can be a psychological warfare which can be used to separate the genuine applicants from the staged ones.

# Your parents have incriminated you (as an immigrant intent) in your past family B2 visa application, and you also seem to have a previous or present untrue ds 160 where you claimed married (may be your mistake or agent mistake) with series of previous travel history which the consular believe was a ploy to acquire a US visa.

# You also failed the twin questions ; Why did you pick this school ? And ; What do you want to do with this degree ? By over explaining which is a good indication of a cramming answers.

# You repeated same cramming indication in all of your answers and that was why the consular cuts you in intermittently, having over heard the same after graduation scripts too often.

Although your deficit is much, but if your parents are capable of proven the funds you should be fine.

1. Consular emotion is a trick. Don't focus on them.
2. Fill your next ds 160 yourself and be certain of the infos.
3. Give other reasonable reasons for picking the school
4. Give other reasonable post graduation reasons .
5. Give short answers. Brevity is the soul of wit.

G.
Thanks for this, I appreciate it!
But we were not seeking to immigrate when we applied for the visa. We have no family in the US and just wanted to visit Disneyland as our first international family vacation. Does applying for a tourist visa now indicate immigrant intent? They've never filed a petition for me before.
And I doubt the agent indicated I was married in my past DS160 as I was 9 years old then, but I'll be sure to check if so.

Thanks for your other suggestions too, I think I might have over-prepared. I'll try to keep my answers shorter in the next interview.

Hi everyone.
I had my F1 visa interview in Abuja in the first week of October and was denied, unfortunately. I'm hoping to reapply again, maybe the first week of December, but I just need help identifying what could be improved upon in my responses. I've been on a break from school for a year now and had to defer to spring because I couldn't find a date, so I really don't want to delay my schooling further.

Profile:
Degree: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Age: 18
Residence: Lagos
COA: $38,000
Funding: $0
I-20 Amount: $58,500
College: Mid-sized public university, not highly ranked, but known for nursing
Travel Experience: Once to the UK 5 years ago
Previous denials: Once, when I was 9, my family applied for a tourist visa to visit Disneyland but was denied

Funding details: I had a scholarship that reduced my COA to about $20,000, but after I deferred, I lost it. I think I have a good chance of regaining it though because I have an SAT of >1500 and a good GPA, but it depends on the amount of funds they distribute for spring admits. I emailed my school after the denial and they informed me they'd release the decisions in early November.

Interview details:
A white woman at the last interviewing window. She seemed already frustrated and annoyed and didn't want long answers at all, which made me more uneasy because I was hoping for an interviewer who would want to have a conversation with me and not just an interview.

Me: Good morning (smiling)
VO: pass me your documents
Me: *In my mind* God abeg, (passes them)
VO: Where are you going?
Me: I'm going to the University of ////// in ///////// to get my bachelor of science degree in nursing.
VO: Who will be covering your deficit?
Me: My parents will be covering it. They own a business that deals in the importation, packaging, and distribution of ///////////. Additionally, they have 2 rental properties in Lagos.
VO: What address will you be staying in
Me: *States the full address of my school as I wrote in the DS160*
VO: Why did you pick this school?
Me: I picked it primarily because of my admission to the honors college (stuttered a bit because of how fast and tension-inducing the whole thing started to feel) with the honors college, I'm going to learn how to develop my ability to work in a team and think critically. I'll also have access to the best research opportunities my college has to offer, which is important for my long-term goals because...
VO: *cutting me off* What do you want to do with this degree
Me: after graduation, I plan to come back to Nigeria and complete my NYSC program, after which I'll apply for a job at a large public hospital like Maitama General or National Hospital. After that, I plan to use the experience gained there to apply for a job at the Federal Health Ministry... (I know it's a bit rambly now, I honestly have researched my future career plans, but it felt like she wasn't really interested and the whole thing made me slowly lose motivation and composure)
VO: *cuts me off* You've been to the UK? I don't see a stamp
Me: Yes, sorry, it's in my old passport (I try to bring it out, but she's already moving on)
VO: Why haven't you traveled again since 2019?
Me: *In my mind (nawa o)* Yes, I planned to travel the year after, but unfortunately, COVID struck then after that I had to focus on my upcoming final exams.
VO: Are you married?
Me: No, I'm not ( huh )
VO: You applied for a US Visa?
Me: Yes, in 2016 my family applied to visit Orlando, but we were denied.

Those are all the questions I can remember being asked. I'm sure I have the order a bit scrambled.
She didn't ask for any documents aside from my passport and I-20. I was, a bit surprised by the rejection, but just to an extent. The vibe was already off and I had no funding.

This was kinda painful typing out so I hope it's worth it. I just need as much advice as I can get at this point. If you need me to give any more details, please let me know. I'm also planning on reapplying in Abuja, so if you have any advice about the embassy in general, I'd be glad to hear it.
Thank you all in advance.
Can you reapply for Fall 2025? You have such a good profile to be paying for the full cost of attendance at a US college considering the cost to your parents. I will say this is a good time to look for potential schools that can give you a free ride. When you come in, if the school has nursing, you can change or switch schools thereafter. Utilize your great profile. You are good enough to be educated on at least a near full ride.
Your explanation on honors college is not good enough. Honors college gives you more privileges such as research, one on one tutoring/mentoring with top professors, scholarships etc.

The school I'm going to offers a lot of scholarships to currently enrolled students through their scholarship web, and even more for honors college students, so I'm not sure if it's worth it. Honestly, I had no idea how this US college application process worked when I started last year, and I'm just realizing how good my SAT score is. But starting it from the beginning might be too psychologically tasking, and it's a gamble. I'm really tired of having life on pause, and I hate that this visa process is presenting another seemingly insurmountable obstacle.

Regardless, I'd appreciate some college suggestions that could offer better scholarships based on my grades and SAT, and thanks for the suggestions!

Hi potken

Immigrant intent (planning to use your visa to overstay or remain in the US with the possibility of not returning to your country) is the major reason of 214b denial , so it does not mean that your family applied for immigration visa.

All my other suggestions is based on reasoning. The consular asked you some questions she was not supposed to ask an 18 year old undergraduate applicant, which probably means she was reading some complications in your ds 160 eg ; Are you married ? Anyways i am wishing you good luck.

G.
I see what you mean, thank you very much. I'll go through the DS160 again and make sure the information is accurate.

It is your choice however, it will be great to avoid visa challenges if you have a profile stunning to get you what you want and make your visa application easier.
Based on your scores, you can check schools in your states of interest and look through each requirement particularly for Honors College. I have a few friends who did their undergraduate studies here in various public schools on full ride and near full ride including tuition, fees, books, and boarding.

Wow. Thank God we have not submitted. Let me edit. Though we have submitted one for Lagos before since we are not getting any response and it is still on preapproval request for a long time now, and as advised here, we want to fill another one under Abuja and apply for interview in Abuja. Is this advisable?
ibroh22:
From experience..it’s better you keep that information of your husband’s cousin to yourself and not even mention it during interview. The school details including the name of the DSO on the I-20 should be what you will put in the US contact person

I made payment which has been confirmed. The account shows something like "your account has been created successfully, you can now complete the process.

I've uploaded my I-20 to the platform but it's just showing Pre-approval Request is being processed.

I chose Abuja. How long will it take them to approve the pre-approval request.

I didn't date signed my 1-20. Hope it won't be a problem.

I've paid SEVIS Fee, gotten confirmation too.
For me it's almost a month in the Pre-approval stage. No response yet from them. I created a ticket and they responded saying they're still doing pre approval on my applications.

Hello everyone, good morning. Please I need help, I already paid visa fee on the last website and I also migrated to the new one(it shows the your account has been created successfully)
It shows pending appointment request at all time and I can’t do anything on it except the group thing… I’m not going as a group and it’s just me

Following the thread, It was pointed that when going for an associate degree there’s a less chance of approval. Help please, I choosed an Associate Degree in HCC

Has anyone recently had an F1 visa appointment in Lagos? if yes, please
1) when did you pay?
2) How did you pay? Was it in the bank or with a card?
3) how long did pre-approval take?
4) did you get an appointment for this year?

Hoping to get an answer, please

Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by VincentTobe: 9:08am On Oct 16, 2024
Greetings everyone, I had a previous visa appointment which I later rescheduled because the new appointment letter states that applicant must come with a passport that is 6 months beyond program end date, my passport at the moment was only two months beyond it so I applied for a new passport and moved my interview date. So please my question now is should I fill another ds160 because the new renewed passport has a different passport number but the old one is still written on the same passport as well. Also at the embassy which passport I’m I suppose to give to the VO because even my old one isn’t expired(still has around 1 year 6 months) but it doesn’t meet the beyond 6 months criteria. Thank you!
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by VirginMaryX: 10:03am On Oct 16, 2024
NoseDive2Succes:
Hi VirginMaryX

Approving your F1 visa appointment is not judged by the type of school you applied to. It is judged with following the embassy direction and the availability of dates.

You are supposed to have filled and submitted your ds 160 completely and have paid SEVIS fee, which is when you are an F1 visa applicant who is ready for visa application.

I don't know, but it seems the procedure you are describing above is not an F1 appointment pattern. Did you get to a stage where I 20 upload is requested? Is this your first time or second time within the last 6 months ? Did you receive approval email to continue on the new page from the old portal ? These are the questions you should think of .

Your issue is not because you have chosen associate degree. If you are confused you should dial the helpdesk or you can raise support ticket with your 120 and sevis payment evidence.

G.
I didn’t get to any stage, it just shows pending appointment request and that’s all and yes I did recieve an approval email. Thank you so much for replying

For Lagos guys, I called and ranted for the avist people today and from the very vague information they provided, I can deduce that they changed their website from one service provider to another and it's been hard for them to get the payment confirmation and that they are working on it. So I guess you should create a ticket again and pray that they resolve the issue fast, they are clearly incompetent. I have tried to open a new account since, they are not sending verification email, they are clearly not ready and I hope information about this gets to the Embassy.

I can attest to the num of questions i asked that was not answered which got me denied.
