Re: What's The Meaning Of The Proverb "Ekuro Lalabaku Ewa by MightySparrow:
It is a deep Yoruba Proverb with an occurrence to interpret.

The ewa is wrong, it is awa. However, where called together in a sentence, it sounds like ẹ̀wà (beans.

When you visit cocoa farm or kolanut farm this giant rat (òkété) always digs out some soil, and with it is the soil, (awa or ẹ̀wà). Everywhere you see the soil (awa) you must see the ekuro. Because ekuro is the rats delicacy that it packs inside.

So when two lovebirds are always seen together, this Proverb is used

The equivalent today is 5&6.

Thanks

You're actually wrong with the interpretation of the proverb

Ewa in this context means beauty and no matter how long a palm kernel exist it will still be beautiful hence the proverb èkùrọ́ lalâbákú ẹwà
Re: What's The Meaning Of The Proverb "Ekuro Lalabaku Ewa by PlayerMeji: 11:17pm On Oct 16, 2024
In those days, cooking beans used to be very expensive especially because of the time it takes for beans to come to fully cook. So ekuro shells which are the byproducts of palm fruits are used to fuel the fire and these shells help to cook the beans faster.

Hence the proverb ekuro lala baku ewa..

Ewa is beauty.
Ekuro the palm kernel is used to make oil (PKO) that is used for many skin care preparations.

I think you're partially wrong as well.

Palm kernel fades once it's no longer fresh. I think it just comes from the fact that most beauty products back then were made from palm kernel. Hence beauty is, and will always be a product of palm kernel.

I may be wrong though.

The soil a bush rat uses its legs to push out is 'Awa'! I think say na beans o.

OP, it simply means 'For better or worse'

This is the problem of Yoruba language today this gradually losing correctness and meaning.

There are so many things like that we hear from the media and Nollywood films.

Let me ask you this and give me the meaning:

Ìṣí wo, ìkòrò wó. Ohun ti ba jọ wò, gigun ní gún.

Tell me: what is ìṣí and ìkòrò?

This is not a correct Yoruba proverb.

another one:

Ki ló ri l' ọbẹ̀, to ngaaru ọwọ́?.
This is wrong also.

1. Ọ̀sǎ wo, ìwòrì wọ........
Osa and ìwòrì àrè both odu ifá.
{( Ọ̀sá méjì and ìwòrì meji) are odu ifá}
No babalawo concludes a divination on only one odu.
If one leads, another must shed more light.
Omoluabi, let us keep our language.

2. Ki ló rí lọbẹ, ti o wa irú (locust beans) s'ọwọ

What is the problem with the soup that he hand picked the irú alone.

...and so on brother mi.

Oodua a gbe wà o.

You are perfectly right. As I mentioned many beauty products had and still have palm kernel oil as an ingredient. Especially soaps and cosmetics.

I only hear those words in our traditional movies from Lalude, Fagbamila, Abija, and other fantastic IFA Actors like Yemi Elebuiibon, Peter Fatomilola, and others. Please, enlighten us on the meanings of those words

If we really want to preserve this our language, there's no way we will not study IFA, because words abound in Ifa citations.

They wouldn't do this because they would call it idolatry.

Our 'yorubaness' is incomplete without Ifa.

I am not a Yoruba major myself. I studied engineering. When I began to hear certain things on the media and films different from what elders say in the village, I began to find out which is correct.

To answer your question, especially, the media houses, which are primary outlets for promoting our language and heritage, they should be more professional.

In Nigeria today, professionalism is played down. For instance, I taught Physics and Mathematics for few years after school. I was not a professional teacher. I believe a teacher by profession should have done better.
In the same vein, rather than doing audition tests alone or in addition to it, media houses should also test proficiency in Yoruba language or a sort of training geared towards broadcasting and acting to be made compulsory. That one seems impossible because to secure jobs in Nigeria is on man - know -man basis. When we continue to hear correct things, it will sink into our memory. We need not learn ifá at all. It is all about standardization.

Even in engineering practice in Nigeria, standardization is eroding away. For instance, no standards. Hardly can a week pass without news of building collapsing and killing people.

I don't really know, maybe our government agencies can intervene.
Most of us educated people even, do not want our children to speak our language or dialect in Nigeria here not to talk of those in diaspora. So it is becoming even a hopeless situation.

.
Anyway, I learned Lagos state wants House of Assembly wants to translate their Constitution to Yoruba and have their discussions in Yoruba language. It could be a right step that can affect other areas. That in itself, I think, it is because certain tribes are claiming that Lagos is no man's land. If something also can provoke Yoruba nation to our values. Maybe, we will wake up.

Thanks brother.
