You are so right on this. I gave one Nigerian friend a personal reference in a job he applied for. The guy went and told his would be employers that I was his former supervisor in my workplace and that we have worked together for over 8 months. Someone living in another county and have never stepped leg in my workplace.
Long story short. I was queried in my workplace when his would be employer wrote to verify his claim. I had to explain my side of the story. The company investigated and somehow found me not guilty. The guy refused to pick my call and even respond to my messages. Since then I avoid association with Nigerians apart from the usual hello and hi.

I just wanted to comment @OP that this helping/cooperation thing is cultural. If it's not inherent in your culture as a people, it is not there! It can't change. Even within a family, we compete against each other to show who is doing better than the other, instead of help one another. That's within a family o... Let alone strangers you don't know. I can't talk about Ghanaians and other Africans but you see Yorubas are the worst! In terms of helping or cooperating to achieve success, they are the most useless tribe/set of people. Most arrogant, self-conceited, selfish and envious tribe.
A Hausa man can shortlist other Hausa men for Jobs just by seeing their names that they are Northerners but Yorubas will never want to see another of their tribe do well. They prefer to even see other tribes in that position than another Yoruba person.

In Yoruba culture, when a person becomes successful he or she must uplift family members before outsiders it's only when the Yoruba person is suffering from inferiority complex they help outsiders and tend to overdo for outsiders instead of their family members or fellow Yorubas.

Reason I have chosen not to go to any Nigerian church here.
I have a friend who was deeply committed in a church denomination back when she was in Nigeria, over here she didn't even bother to find a branch of that church. She has comfortably settled into a church where they are mostly whites and she is thriving.
