IBB lied to you and me back then about what SAP was all about. Yes, he succeeded in hoodwinking Nigerians all while he looted the country blind on the back of his SAP-is-to-blame campaigns. Look at the list below to see that even 40 years later, the very same set of reforms are needed in Nigeria even today. undecided

Also note, Obasanjo successfully implemented the list before during the last 4 years of his time in office and every Nigerian you ask would tell yo that they enjoyed that period. So, if anyone tells you these reforms are the reason why you are suffering today, that person is lying to you. undecided
Obassanjo didn't 'fully' implement any of these reforms. Also who told you it was the same thing IBB tried selling in 1986? We don't don't need these World bank /IMF reforms. We need to get rid of wastage, corruption and mismanagement. Which developing country has ever implemented their reforms and has succeeded in turning around the fortunes of it's people? NONE

1. Obasanjo did in fact begin full implementation of what he called his NEEDS program from as far back as 2003. https://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/scr/2005/cr05433.pdf
There is also the progress report that was submitted in 2007 to indicate how far the administration had gotten and much of this can be verified by the facts on the ground at the time in Nigeria. https://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/scr/2007/cr07270.pdf

2. There is an assessment report of the IBB SAP implementation that was produced back in 1997. that explains a lot of the pullbacks we witnessed from many of the commitments made by IBB during that time. https://www.elibrary.imf.org/display/book/9781557756305/9781557756305.xml

3. How far have you then been able to rid yourself of wastage, corruption, and mismanagement without a clear plan in over 60 years? undecided

4. Ignorance is not bliss! Nigeria is one example of a developing country that did it successfully! As I said before, Nigeria successfully implemented and sustained implementation for about 4 years during Obasanjo's time in government. undecided

Lets look at it this way; how many people are involved in rice farming in Nigeria?? Up to 100k citizens? What do they do with their excess profits? Build factories and industries? No! Create morw high paying jobs? I'm not seeing it. Or marry new wives, then go to upper and lesser hajj, maybe then buy new cars and mansionshuh

Compare that with this;

How many people consume rice in Nigeria? Obviously, hundreds of millions of people . Its a staple that is eaten by almost every healthy Nigerian on a daily basis. That means hundreds of millions of consumers and thousands of retailers and wholesalers.

So, for how long will the government contineu to caliberate economic policies that only carter to the well being of a few thousand greedy farmers , while millions of citizens go hungry? They don't even pay taxes! I mean the socalled farmers. They just grab grab grab and grab.

And if all they do is to buy foreign commodities and properties abroad with their profits, such behaviour still instigates capital flight. If the rice farmers are not willing to drastically reduce their prices, the border should be thrown wide open for big rice imports. We should all not die because we want to help some ruthless rice farners.
You know nothing about farming, farmers or even it's logistics. You say they do not pay taxes? Take your money, go to Eg kano, kebbi, kaduna, buy Eg 200 bags and move it by road to Lagos. Even rice is too much, buy ordinary yam, quarter of a truck, move it to mile 12 market, then come and tell us of your experience.

4. Artificial scarcity
Re: Why Is A Bag Of Rice 97,000? Why Does it Keep Increasing? by Iolo(m): 1:43am On Oct 20, 2024
The government is partly responsible for the price increase of rice. This whole concept of sharing rice as a form of palliative has meant the government is buying it in bulk from the rice mills.

This will naturally drive up costs for everyone else as there’s less supply for the rest of the population to buy. Last I checked the government doesn’t directly own any farms and hasn’t been importing the rice it’s been giving out. Also, rice production hasn’t magically doubled overnight so there’s definitely a government factor impacting prices. They need to chill out on the rice sharing for a bit. Share garri instead as cassava is much cheaper to farm and produce than rice.

Other reasons as people have rightly said are insecurity and lack of mechanization in our rice farming. Given the billions pumped into rice farming during buhari’s tenure through the CBN anchor borrowers scheme, one would have thought things will have changed significantly by now.

Finally point is RIFAN is a very powerful association of rice farmers. Given what I’ve mentioned above and the lack of foreign rice coming in to disrupt prices in any significant manner, I don’t see prices coming down anytime soon.

Useful article below from business day:

https://businessday.ng/news/article/insufficient-rice-trails-decade-long-trillion-naira-interventions/

Rice production is actually dropping and billed to drop by 40% in 2024. Rice mills don’t have enough paddy rice to process because farmers are not getting good enough yields. Many farmers seem to have abandoned rice farming for insecurity or just lack of profitability reasons.

I’ve read some comments blaming the farmers. I don’t think they’re to blame at all.
A bag of 100kg paddy rice was being solved for NGN42,000 earlier in the year. Average yield from a bag of paddy rice to refined rice is about 55% to 70%. Which means that bag will yield a 50kg bag of rice if we go with the lower end.

This means the rice millers and traders selling the rice are also charging a premium.

We will show them lesson they will never forget and they forget we will all buy rice same price .
During the protest FG announced they have remove customs 🛃 duties on food items I laughed. Rather they are competing which agency will generate highest revenue.

A cup of rice is 500-600. How many people can afford it?

Hasn't anyone considered the facts that the FG and (likely) some states are buying up the available rice to either share as palliative or sell for 40k?
We are in the rice planting season which means no new stock in the market. Too much money chasing too few goods will ALWAYS result in price inflation anytime, any day.

Add in low yields this year and insecurity, you'll get your answer.
I just hope this years floods came with a conscience if not, we're on a VERY LONG THING

Simple answer

Nigeria population is less productive and more than available resources.

While Thailand was using their land and God given rain to plant rice Nigeria is busy doing nothing, but importing

Your question should be is Nigeria so lazy that it can't feed herself
Ask your economic teacher a bout demand and supply

When demand is more than supply price must go up.
Apologies
This discussion is above ur IQ.
Rice, garri or any major food is not scarce in Nigeria
There is nothing like shortage of supply or increase in demand.
It is just bad govt policies.
Are u saying Nigeria population suddenly doubled within the last year, that will now cause demand to increase and supply dropped?
In short, demand has drastically dropped this days because people can no longer afford it. Not that rice is not available.

Have we been planting for the past 1year ?

In short there no money self.

Fuel and importation are what drive our economy so removing fuel subsidy and floating the naira at the same time will definitely have a grave consequences on the economy
Nigeria may never recover until we find a leader ready to do the right thing.

It's the wickedness of Nigerians you're witnessing.. Our people always want to take advantage of any situation to make excessive gains for themselves. Rice that shouldn't cost more than 45 - 50k due to concessions of FG (import duty waiver) is what some are selling for 90 - 105k.

This is why it will be very hard for the black man to develop.

Those causing this hardship by inflating prices of food items and other commodities are the same people you see in mosques praying 100 times a day, same people in the front row in churches dancing and doing all sort so people will assume they are pure and holy.
Don’t blame the marketers or the importers blame your government policy non is working. You can’t get $ to purchase goods , customs 🛃 even charge more on $ rate than banks . Let the govt remove import duties on food items and see if the price won’t reduce.

Told people this more than a year back(around August 2023), then bag of rice was just about 48k.
It is now double and it is getting worse. They dont know the damage he has done ti the econonmy yet.

Get out now if and when you can

Unless the Federal government unfloats the currency ..rice will become 200k before the ens of 2025......

Even great China doesn't run a free floating currency.....even the United states subsidizes petrol..........but Nigeria that runs a heavily import-reliant economy thought it will be okay to float it's naira...
.....all for what?? To return IMFs money so that they can have more allowance to borrow for the rulling class to live in luxury....
. In summary...the masses are paying heavily for excesses of the government... If u can get out of Nigeria......get the fvck out because it will only get worse

Here's another question, why do you believe the idea that your government floated the Naira to give the IMF back its money? Is Nigeria not supposed to rightly pay back debts or something? undecided
