You may be curious about Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, and Liquefied Natural Gas, LNG. Both of these fuels come from natural gas. They are cleaner options compared to regular fossil fuels.

However, they are different in how they are made, stored, and used.

Here are six differences between CNG and LNG:

1. Form and Storage: CNG gas is stored under high pressure, about 3,600 psi, in strong tanks and it stays in gas form. LNG on the other hand is cooled to very low temperatures, about -162°C (-260°F), to become a liquid. It is kept in special insulated tanks at lower pressure.

2. Energy Density: CNG has less energy packed into it compared to LNG, which means it takes up more space. LNG has more energy in a smaller volume because it is in liquid form, making it better for long-distance transport.

3. Uses: CNG gas is mostly used in city buses, taxis, and local cars. It is easy to store and refill while LNG is used for long trips, heavy trucks, and ships because it can carry more energy.

4. Refueling and Infrastructure: Refueling CNG is easier as there are more stations in cities, and these stations use compressors to fill vehicles quickly. On the other hand, refueling LNG is more complicated as it needs special equipment to handle the cold temperatures and requires more infrastructure.

5. Environmental and Safety Aspects
: If CNG leaks, it spreads quickly and is less likely to cause ground contamination. But, if not handled carefully, the high pressure can cause explosions.

6. LNG is safer during transport because it turns into gas if it leaks. However, if it warms up too much, it can turn back into gas and create explosion risks in closed spaces.

Knowing these differences is important when choosing which fuel to use. Each type of fuel has its own benefits for different needs and uses.

Lovely article
I know that LNG is used for cooking gas
CNG mainly for powering plant, gen or small vehicle

Hope I'm correct 😀

This CNG storage pressure of up to 3,600 psi will possibly pose devastating explosion risks.

In event of an accident, 3600psi explosion go be like bomb.

You can power generator with LNG.

LPG is used as cooking gas, not LNG.

What you're using for cooking (i.e LPG) is propane (for Nigeria) or butane gas (in some other countries. Either C3H8 or C4H10 is the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

LNG requires liquefaction units or LNG trains for the cooling process (cryogenic cooling) at very low temperature (-160 to -165 degrees Celcius which is approx. -260 degrees Fahrenheit). It's basically used for fueling in long distances e.g. ships and can be regasified for compression under pressure to get CNG.

While it is true we use LPG for cooking in Nigeria, LNG is also used for cooking.
LPG can be liquified by pressure and stored using our normal gas cylinders LNG on the other hand is stored using special equipments but it is also used for cooking and other applications

It's not economical to use LNG for cooking.. In Chemical Engineering, LNG is mostly for export, LPG & CNG are okay for cooking, as fuel for vehicles, etc. in-country.
LNG is mostly for countries far far away who don't have gas resource but need gas for their industries and other activities. Bear in mind that gas processing and storage equipment cost way higher than the ones for oil, part of reasons Nigeria hasn't been able to fully harness her gas resource. You need huge amount of money in the billions of dollars to set up LNG trains for instance.

Politicians and government officials should lead by example.
Let them start posting pictures of their official vehicles using CNG like they did with COVID-19 jab to gain the confidence of the masses.

They are protected from over pressure by relief valves and other safety devices. That's why you should do the conversion in an authorized center . It's very safe when all safety protections are put in place and working.

Not like bomb, it is a bomb on its own. Unimaginable destruction is what it would cause.

The federal government should educate nigerians on the safety precautionary measures.on the safe ways of using the CNG gas in their vehicles, buses to avoid explosion

The gas used for cooking is LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas). LPG is obtained as a by product of crude oil (petroleum) refining.
If not Liquified for use, the gas is usually flared (burnt) in refineries.
LNG and CNG are both forms of natural gas. Natural gas occurs on its own and is not obtained from petroleum. It is extracted independently as natural gas.
