The attack was on Yom Kippur...espcially on a Sabbath--a day when the Jews take their commandment seriously to either eliminate any form of work or limit it tremendously. So Hamas took advantage of the gap in communication to unleash massive havok given the fact that despite the Hamas' Mickey-Mouse military drills by the security fence and other areas....Israel had erroneuosly thought that Hezbollah to the North in Lebanon was the actual major threat and Hamas may have (in their initial thinking) been the distracting decoy to the major attack to emerge from the North. In a real sense, the mistake Israel made was to never take the Hamas seriously the way they took their foes to the North mostly because they viewed the enemy from their arsenal capacity--from the deadliness of their accumulated armaments (Hezbollah was rumored to have more guided missiles and had the capacity to rain three thousand missiles a day on Israel for a full year etc, ---which all got unravelled after the strategic pager attack etc.,)

So the real flaw was Israel underestimating Hamas....which has certainly revised their outlook and policies going forward.
