Lagos Assembly Intervenes in Model College Fee Hike as Parents Protest

Following a protest by some Lagos parents over the increase in the boarding fees of the state's model colleges, the Lagos State House of Assembly has directed the Chairman of its House Committee on Education, Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara, to invite all the concerned stakeholders and report back within a week.

This directive came after the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, met with the protesters at the Assembly gate.

The fees were hiked from N35,000 to N100,000 for the 2024/2025 session which commenced on September 15, 2024.

During plenary on Monday, Obasa said that he had to intervene when he heard the crowd chanting protest songs at the entrance to the Assembly.

He advised the parents to remain calm, assuring them that the matter would be addressed.

Hon. Sangodara (Surulere II) informed the House that the committee had already engaged the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders.

Hon. Shabi Adekola (Lagos Mainland II) also explained that during a meeting with the officials of the Ministry of Education and others, it was agreed that the parents should continue paying N35,000 pending further review of the fees.

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa Constituency II) pointed out that the increment was primarily related to students’ feeding costs. He, however, urged the government to explore ways to ease the financial burden on parents and offer assistance where necessary.

In his contribution, Hon. Bonu Solomon (Badagry I) added that parents had raised concerns that students unable to pay the new fee were not allowed to purchase food within the school premises adding that this had further complicated the situation.

The House is expected to await the report from the education committee before taking further steps.

Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly related this report to the press on Monday October 21st, 2024.

Are these parents forced to put their kids in boarding schools? Why should the citizen who work and pay taxes over subsidize these wards? Many of these schools are not easy to enter since not more than 50% get in on merit.
If you think the hostel cost is too much, withdraw the child from the school. There are day schools around that are way cheaper.

Re: Lagos Assembly Intervenes In Model College Fee Hike As Parents Protest by Lanretoye(m): 11:34pm On Oct 21, 2024
If the hike was because of feeding cost then let the people be able to provide their food by themselves if possible, allow food vendors in the schools.all these hikes are making government look insensitive to the plight of the masses in the face of all these economic woes.

100k is too much.

Let's be factual.

1000 pupils in the school * 100,000 , that's is 100,000,000 Million per term...

Government should use their head

A term is 3 months.
Can N100k feed your child for 3 months.
We haven't talked about managing the facilities, paying the teaching and management staff...
Many of you talk from your assess.
zero knowledge of basic economics.

The school fees should be subsided but if we are to go by this your calculations, then the school fees need to be increased above N100k

it's subsidized already. Which boarding school will accept 100k from you? I'm not saying the hike is justified oo.
Re: Lagos Assembly Intervenes In Model College Fee Hike As Parents Protest by bobbiiee:
My ward attended one of these schools. To me, a N100,000 price tag is justified considering inflation.

The estimated cost of feeding a student for 13 weeks ( one term) if the cost per meal is N300.

Daily Food Cost:
3 meals/day × N300/meal = N900/day

Weekly Food Cost:
N900/day × 7 days/week = N6,300/week

13-Week Food Cost:
N6,300/week × 13 weeks = N81,900

So, the estimated cost of feeding a student for 13 weeks ( a term) is N81,900.

If this estimate is fair, it means the government is paying the salaries of both teaching, non-teaching staff, electricity bills, and also maintaining the facilities. The state of the Nation is affecting almost everyone. We can't say with this breakdown the school is not subsidized.

Model schools are run by the government and not a profitable venture. We have unity colleges over the country subsidized as well.
If they're to increase fees to 100k and above, how is it different from schools run for profit? It's like state teaching hospitals and other private hospitals.

What exactly are they benefitting from the government? The people in government enjoyed free education and other incentives during their time, why can't they do same for others?

I believe you're an Agbado supporter no need to engage you further on this. Infact they should increase the fees to 500k to match with others and generate revenue. The government of the day is interested in generating revenue at all costs. Milk them dry!

People should take note that the 100k is feeding fee and not tuition fee.

Government schools are free.

What the government is telling the parents indirectly is that the quality/quantity of the food their children eat is nothing to write home about; their children need to be fed well.

It's not compulsory for them to put their kids in a boarding school. School fees in state schools in Lagos is free.

They can't become day students and won't need to pay 100k

Government should heavily subsidize primary and secondary schools, because these levels of education is compulsory. However, tertiary should be for the people that can afford. If you cannot afford tertiary education, learn a skill or trade.

There are other schools now, go to school you can afford. Must everyone go to boarding school

It's easier to monitor your children health, academic performance and overall growth in day school than putting them in boarding
