How I Lost N100,000 Betting on Integrity of Governor Sanwo Olu on Minimum Wage. It all started with a bold declaration when the governor of our state proudly announced that the long-awaited minimum wage increase had finally been implemented. He stated on Channels TV that minimum wage in Lagos is now N85,000. The news spread like wildfire, and the excitement in the air was palpable. Social media lit up with celebrations, and many state workers eagerly awaited the next payday, convinced that their salaries would reflect this newfound relief. I, too, believed in the Governor’s words. After all, a man in such a position—someone as influential as the Governor of Lagos State—wouldn’t lie about something so significant and verifiable, right? His word was supposed to be his bond. But not everyone shared my optimism. While many rejoiced, a few skeptical government workers weren’t so easily convinced. They whispered among themselves that the governor’s promises were nothing more than political sweet talk. “It’s a lie,” one of them said with certainty. I was trying to hail a friend of mine who works as a civil servant in Lagos, congratulating him for the new pay rise but he was not optimistic at all and something inside me flared. I couldn’t just stand by and listen to the way he was speaking about the integrity of the state government. So, I did what any overly confident man would do: I placed a bet. “I’ll tell you what,” I said to him. “If your October salary doesn’t reflect the new minimum wage, I’ll personally pay you N100,000 naira. But if it does, you’ll pay me just 20,000 from your salary.” I had thought it was a simple SURE BET. After all, it was all over the news that Lagos State Government now pays N85,000 minimum wage. I could feel he was warning me, are you sure you want to bank on the Governor? It was a bold wager, but I believed I was playing it safe. After all, no governor would make such an announcement without following through, right? Wrong. Payday came, 23rd October, and with it, the crushing realization. My phone buzzed. The government worker sent me a message, his tone dripping with amusement: “Old salary, no change.” I stared at the screen, unable to believe it. Surely, this was a mistake? I waited for another message, hoping it would correct the first. But no. The governor, for all his grandeur, had not kept his word. I had lost. Not just the bet, but my faith in what I thought was a straightforward equation of integrity. So, here I am, 100,000 naira loser, all because I bet on the integrity of a state governor. Lesson learned: never gamble on promises, no matter how grand they sound nor who said it. |

You see, this one na pure case of betting on something that is not tangible. You can't bet on government policy as they are subject to change |

odejimioflagos:His integrity has cost me N100,000. He should have implemented it before coming to the press to claim it. In fact, he even said he would like to come by January 2025 to say it has now been increased to N100,000. I lost faith in Government officials. Now I know that civil servants know them more than we the private citizens |

Shadomaan7:This is not a matter of policy but a declarative statement from the number one man in the most populous state in West Africa. Stop giving excuses for lack of integrity. |

I have maintained one view on this forum, that many people that comment on employment and wages are people that don't work or earn wages. Yes they started the payment from October doesn't mean you will earn the amount in October. You may not even get the actual payment until next year because there will be meetings and negotiations but you will be paid arrears. So if they start actual payment of the newly implemented in December. You will get the one you didn't receive for October and November as arrears in December. |

No sorry for you cus you bet foolishly. I am sure you are not aware that such pronouncement will have to go through what is called due process before it can be implemented. Many of your type who doesn't understand how Governance work will be quick to condemn and criticize. I HOPE YOU FOLLOWED THE INVESTMENT RULE ANYWAY, AND NOT THAT YOU BET WITH GREED. |

Wolexyoshi:You are one of the problems of Nigeria. Defending the indefensible. Does he not know that there is a process before making a bold statement. Did he use futuristic tenses or present tense. In a sane clime, I could sue him and win for a misleading statement....but this is Nigeria where people like you will see the truth but call attention to things not important |

ObiORBiafra:Such an unwise statement from you. Yes they started payment in October but you may not even get the actual payment until next year. Does this statement make sense to you? How could you say they started payment in October and in the next line you said you won't get it in October. Did you read this before posting? How can you say a payment has started when you have not implement or disburse the funds ![]() Oh, Nigerians are the real problem of Nigeria. |
| Re: I Bet On Governor Sanwo Olu's Integrity On Minimum Wage and I Lost by Wolexyoshi(m): 4:54pm On Oct 24, 2024 |
Niorte:Instead of you to learn, you are here saying rubbish. Did the Governor ever say the payment will commence in October? The answer is a capital NO. Now let me give you an example. It was on the day of swearing in the President declared that Subsidy is gone. Can you tell when that statement was implemented?? The answer is a capital NO. DID YOU UNDERSTAND?? |
