My Annoying Experience At Nigerian Immigration Yesterday. This Is Not Fair by TimiRume(op): 9:33am On Nov 01, 2024
Why are some Nigerians like this? Why have we sworn to sabotage everything before us like no man business?

I went to the Immigration office yesterday with the sum of N50k hoping to get my passport application process started and probably get it within a month. Before going there yesterday, I saw online that the federal govt had increased the fee recently from 35k to 50k. I managed to get the 50k and was praying to find an officer who would do it at a lesser price.

However on getting there, I was met with a totally different fee. At first I was confused, because the moment I arrived some men started "hustling" to whisk me away to a nearby office, a stone throw away from the main immigration office. They told me since I was applying for a fresh passport(I told them, my bad), I had to follow them because they were the ones in charge of that. I relunctantly followed them. They explained somethings to me and brought out a form to fill. I mumbled not so fast and asked how much for it, the 5yrs own? And they said 80k. 80 what!! I got suddenly angry and started walking out.

Returned back to main building and found an officer. He told me same 80k price but I can pay 50k to get an appointment slip and when I come on Monday for capturing, balance up. I almost started crying. He said not to worry my passport would be out in 3weeks plus some days time. I told him if that's the case, I would pay the balance once I get my passport in 3weeks time. But he refused, saying the balance must be paid on the capture date. We went back and forth, and he said something like some people pay millions to get theirs and they don't ask all these questions I'm asking.

Well, I knew something was off with that promise of 3weeks collection time but that was not the primary thing bothering me. The fee was my problem. Why do they allow these guys overcharge customers above the standard fee with their heavy commissions? This isn't fair.

My tfair to and fro was 6k. Wasted. I went back home not able to start the application. Some guys I met outside told me if I want it urgently, I would pay even more than 100k. Sorry, I don't plant money in my house.

Did these guys lie to me or did I not meet the right people yesterday?

I went to swear an affidavit at Ikoyi high court sometime last year. When I got to the gate, a man rushed towards me and enquired what I was there for. Having told him, he took me to one of the many rooms in the court premises, brought out a form and asked me to fill it. He also requested two passport photographs. When I was done, he told me the price was 5k. I haggled with him a bit till he accepted a 1k discount. After I had paid and was waiting to collect the sworn affidavit sheet, a guy who had just collected his came and sat beside me. I asked him how much it cost him, and he said 1k.
I couldn't control myself as I dashed into the office and requested a complete cancellation of the process. And an immediate refund. I was ready to create a scene. Afterall, I was already on a few shots of champagne. You can't shame a shameless man. At the end of the day, I paid 2k for peace to finally reign.

Lesson learned, avoid anyone rushing you to get a thing done cos its not without their own gain at your expense.

Don't pay them shishi...look at the comments above as they enable the dysfunctional system. Go through the DIY route, or wait for Dec 1 when you can do it from your house, and the most important I would like you to do is to REPORT THEM TO THE HONOURABLE MINISTER on X. He should respond and they will take it up.

We have a minister now who is proactive...don't encourage the corruption in the system. Expose it to light. 80k ko, 100k ni...they want to maga you and you dey drop hand...tueeh.

You are supposed to do it yourself online and pay the 50k .....u will get ur capturing date, go there and get captured...
even if you are going to tip any officer on ur capture date...it won't be more than 5k to 10k just to hasten your capturing...because the crowd is always much...

But if u want to go there for them to help you initiate the process from scratch that you could do by yourself ...u will be exploited .

.. Passport service is believed to be a service from pple who have eaten belle full and still have extra to be flying upandan.........so you are a natural candidate for exploitation, na u go give urself brain...... Everybody dey vex for naija.....

Really because I got to know yesterday also that the online application is another problem. Plus you will still have to pay something when you come for capture. And I need this urgently. Will applying online benefit me collecting it as early as possible without having to pay again?

Thanks. This DIY route is me applying online myself right? There was something the officer I met told me, I suspect fear mongering though. He said, any little mistake you make online, your application would be automatically cancelled and you will have to pay another whole sum again to get it done properly. Nah, he was exaggerating.

Truly, the 80k and 100k are just too much. Not right at all

if you do it alone online you might get it in six months or more but if you mingle with the officers they will make it easier for you. You should budget like 100k and pay them 80k and use the remaining for your tfare and refreshments

If u want to collect early u will have to go to a passport issuing state where there is no plenty application....I doubt if u can find such in lagos, ogun, or ibadan......

.because of the updated system, each successful application will enter a queue so weda u do it urself at home or they do it for you, its the same portal and they cant put ur name in front of another person's profile that has initiated their application successfully before you....

If u want any VIP treatment u will pay close to 200k....that 80k is standard service which may even take up to two months depending on the number of pple that chose the center for capturing

It is a straightforward process, nothing difficult there. You can also read what will be required before you do the DIY for a smooth experience.

Your statement " I managed to get the 50k and was praying to find an officer who would do it at a lesser price"

Why do you need an officer to do it for you, while there are people already before you!

You guys don't hate corruption, you only talk when it's not favoring you!

The instructions on how to proceed is there, you developed your own instructions and went there, only to be confronted by their own instructions!

Why complain?

Promising to give you earlier than supposed means someone who came before you will have to wait..... These are just some of the mentality a lot of Nigerians take abroad!

The first cultural shock that would greet you abroad is that you will never be able to join the queue.... better learn it in Nigeria before going abroad!

I see a lot of people encouraging you to just part with the 80k.

No Timi, don't! Do your application online, go for your appointment and wait patiently. I did not pay an extra kobo and got mine within 2 weeks at the NIS HQ in Abuja. When my cousin was also applying for hers, a particular officer named Eno at the processing center vowed she will not process her passport except we part with an extra 30k. She claimed the DIG passport would take 20k out of the 30k. I reported at Servicom desk there at the HQ and instead of intervening, they advised me to "just comply". I was furious to know that they were all part of a syndicate. I went straight to the Ministry of Interior and submitted a petition to the HM, I also copied ICPC and the CoS to the President. The DG passport was summoned and it turned out that Eno was acting on her own accord. In summary, my cousin's passport was released 5 days later.

Now, if anyone harasses you, just take their name from the badge on their uniform, stealthily record conversations if you can and call them all out on twitter. Tag the HM. He is one person who doesn't like his name being dragged for corruption.

Meanwhile, you are part of the problem. You knew you needed your passport and you waited till the 11th hour before starting the process. If you know you can't wait, then go ahead and pay the corrupt officers but just know that you have no right to curse at Mr. President or any other public official after doing so.

Do it online yourself so far you have all your documents intact, as in genuine documents.

You don't expect business centres operators(/louts & unscrupulous) officers to do it for free for you; is internet data free, for example.

I have referred over 20 people to do themselves online, and over 10 of them did it successfully.

https://passport.immigration.gov.ng/

You need your:

- NIN
- e-passport photo
- birth certificate
- Local Government Certificate of Indigeneship

Ensure all the documents are GENUINE and original copies are with you because it will be sighted on your capture date.

I repeat, genuine, because the system will accept fake but officers know genuine LGCI and will refuse to capture you if you go with a fake one.
