A Human Rights Defender, Chidiebube Okeoma, has taken home a set of twin boys seized by a medical doctor for the inability of their mother to offset the medical bill after she was delivered of the babies on May 4, 2024.

Okeoma, in a statement in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Saturday, said that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, should be commended for his professional and fatherly intervention which ensured that the twin boys went home despite the doctor’s insistence to keep holding them against their fundamental human rights.

He said that he was not the first person who had gone to the maternity ward to request for the discharge of the babies and their 19-year old mother, but the doctor made it very impossible.

Okeoma disclosed that the CP’s intervention after the doctor acknowledged before him in his office on Thursday that he jokingly requested that the babies be exchanged in lieu of the delivery bill, was commendable.

The activist disclosed that apart from taking the babies home for the first time since they were born close to six months ago, well meaning citizens through his effort were able to secure the release of the babies and bought food items, diapers and gave a cash of N100,000 to the mother of the twins.

He urged the Commissioner to charge the doctor for hostage taking, abuse of the medical ethics and an attempt to compromise the identities of the twins.

The activist narrated that his team wasn’t the first to come for the discharge of the twins but the doctor kept hiking the delivery charges in order to make it difficult for whoever came for their release.

Okeoma appealed to the police chief to set up a panel to investigate the assault the doctor and his nurses inflicted on the 19-year-old nursing mother and the kids’ grandmother.

We need health insurance policies to prevent such occurrences. It is really a difficult situation to be in for both parties. I can imagine the backlash if medical service was refused by the hospital in the first instance.

I can tell you for a fact and from experience that a lot of patients come into hospital that costs a fortune to run, enjoy credit services and when they recover, the first thought they have is how tonabscond without paying their bills.

They do not care about how their absconsion affects the business; how their absconsion affects staff salaries, infrastructure shortage and equipment procurement.

Medicare is not free nor cheap anywhere in the world and customers or clients are under obligation to pay for services recieved or make it clear from the onset that they do not have the financial capacity to pay. Not after spending years in medical school, paying a fortune setting up the facility, employing staff, you walk in and recieve care, then turn around to start claiming human right.

If every other patient claimed human right, would you have met the doctor or even a hospital ?

Childbirth and delivery is not an emergency and the woman knew fully well the implication of having unprotected sex and carrying the pregnancy.

If you cant pay, then you must provide a Surety that will stand for you. Nonsense. If you cant pay bills that I'm sure isnt up to 100k, how then do you even plan to raise the child? How do you plan to feed and send the child to school. That's how they end up bringing nuisances into the world.

The couple are apparently troublemakers. Becasue how do you 3xplain not been able to pay meager bills for a whole 6months. Six freaking months!!

This is one of the reason why there are so many baby factories all over the South East. Most of the young ladies there got pregnant, rejected by the person responsible, rejected by the society and since most of them are poor, they end up In baby factories disguised as maternity centers , some don't even want to sell their babies or profit from it, they just want to give birth and move on

It was when I got to understand this that I began to see the baby factories from a different perspective

If that Doc shows you hunting bills after his life, you'd be shocked. Sincerely running hospitals is not beans. By the time you begin the work and you start to pity people by doing charities, by the time hunger and bills set in, and ingratitude of some patients (major thing), cos some could be so mean, na that time the doc go begin to think say nobody gets this monopoly of craze na, and na that time folks go begin blame am.
