Dr. Adedeji Ashiru, MD and CEO of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, announced plans by the Federal Government to build seven dams across the six southwestern states, aiming to boost irrigation and food production. Additionally, there are moves to concession the hydropower component of the Oyan Dam, which has the potential to generate nine megawatts of electricity.

Speaking at the 46th Annual Conference of the Association for Consulting Engineering in Nigeria in Lagos, Ashiru highlighted the role of dams in flood control, noting the Oyan Dam has protected Abeokuta and Isheri from severe flooding since its construction in 1979.

Ashiru confirmed contracts for the dams would be awarded soon, in line with President Tinubu's agricultural agenda. The dams will feature greenhouses, open fields, and storage facilities for year-round farming.

ACEN President, Kem-Selem Bukar, noted the conference's theme, “Sustainable Development: Building Resilient Cities,” was inspired by climate challenges like flooding. Bukar also highlighted new regulations to tackle building collapse, a frequent issue in Nigeria, aiming for improved monitoring and enforcement.

Dams are built for specific purposes if the conditions are right.

Over the years, more dams were built in Northern Nigeria than any other part of Nigeria, and rightly so since they have larger rivers, that are suitable for dams, and they need irrigation far more than others.If they need more, then build it there.

I don't know how many rivers in the South East can accommodate a dam, and whether such dams will deliver much benefits. If there are, then dams can be built there.

But it should not be that because a project is going on in one region, other regions must get same project whether or not they need it.

As for the South South, while I am.not an expert in dams, many areas of the Niger delta are too flat for a dam. And do they need dams. If yes, then river basin authorities the South South (every region has a river basin authority) should make the business case and submit to the relevant ministry.

You can't beef the South West on this.

Contact your region's River Basin Authority and ask them why they are not proposing dams for your region.

If Nigeria is serious about escaping from the unfortunate mono-revenue stream of the oil and gas exploration, Agriculture is the clearest and most viable way.

Tinubu is clearly miles better than Buhari in strategic initiatives. Buhari has messed up the economy so bad, and that is why the current govt is finding it hard to breathe.

If it were Buhari, he would have gone to borrow more from IMF or China and divert it oil research projects in Kano or one stupid place in the North. Or build a bridge from Nigeria to Chad or Niger republic.

If Naira will rise again, Agriculture is the clearest pathway.

Southwest has very good soil, I dont know why the north should be our agricultural vanguard.

Create govt backed huge farmlands and security framework fully supported and funded by the govt. Nigeria will rise again.
