If the father never agreed that you could ASSAULT his child— I believe many states are already declaring assault of that kind a crime at this point— then you are in the wrong for doing that. If that man had filed assault charges against you with the police, not even the principal of that school would have been able to help you. undecided

How will the child get his o'level and ssce certificates? Or will you design it for him?

not all teachers are half-baked some of us developed ourselves and we value our integrity. I find homeschooling a positive way helping kids in this modern day. I think the traditional teaching method is frustrating. But I am educationist. Are we really teaching these students or indoctrinating them with useless ideas they won't need. I have learnt a lot after learning from a group called revival of wisdom. I think so far a child is able to comprehend and do basic summation and difference the rest is bullshiiit

How can a Proprietoress who was once a teacher in someone's sch boldly tell her staff that their Future end here in her sch, and that the students are now the future. Allotrope69:
As a teacher in this particular sch, I and my colleagues have been completely dissatisfied with some of the school's anti-worker policies.

There's no decision or policy that favors the teachers. We are always at the receiving end of every decision.
For instance, as a form Teacher and also a teacher of Mathematics, I must ensure that my students eat their foods(Lunch). I must monitor them closely to make sure they don't take their foods home. They must finish their food.
If any student absents himself/herself, I must call the parents to check. Failure to do so would be akin and tantamount to insensitivity and lack of care for my students. These are JSS3 students we are talking about. But if the teacher is absent due to one reason or the other, same parents would not bother to check on the teacher even if they are aware.

Here's the most annoying part for me. I have a student. A new student who just came in in September. The child hasn't been doing well. The parents came on Open Day and met with me, we discussed on the way forward and how we can help the child to do better. This is a student who cares less about studies, so it is almost difficult to help him. Today we concluded our second Continuous Assessment Test and almost every teacher whose subjects had been written have all marked their scripts. I told this particular student to go round the teachers and get the scores of all His subjects for me. They offer 18 subjects. But to my surprise, the proprietoriess told me to go round the teachers and get his scores. She said so in the presence of this child. This is a woman that knows how busy I am as a Maths teacher, I barely even sit in my class cos I am always up and doing. What's wrong in a child carrying out this simple task?

Some supervisors came from the Ministry of Education a few weeks ago, and they noticed that we over pamper the children. They told us that they hope we have a university for them, because the way we are pampering them, if they go to higher institutions with such lackadaisical & nonchalant attitude, they will fail. So it's either we reduce the way we do it or we build a university for them to continue the pampering. It's not like the sch is a big sch where parents pay heavy sums as sch fees. Fee is 40k per term.

As a teacher, if a student fails to do your assignment, and u discipline that child, the proprietoriess will blame u. And if u don't discipline that child to Correct him/her, and same proprietoriess finds out that the students didn't do your assignment, she will public scold you. Shout at an erring student, it's a problem. Flog the child, it's a problem. Talk to the child, it's a problem. They will find a way of misconstruing your words to suit their narratives. A student can insult u and u won't do anything. If u do, they will label u as wicked. They will ask u why u can't see the child as just a child and overlook things. It's really frustrating.
You can imagine catching a JSS 2 student doing test and exam malpractice, if u deduct the child's score, it's a problem. If u flog, it's a Problem. I once deducted a child's score when I caught him him cheating in an exam. I mean, this boy had the impetus, guts and audacity to open his Maths notebook and be copying directly to his exams script. I used my red pen to deduct just 10marks, and in the end, I was told not to deduct any score. It was said right in the presence of this same student, and other students present there. I was weak. Very weak.

Some parents also try to bully teachers cos they are backed up by the school owners. After all, a customer is always right. If a Parent contracts u to have a private lesson for their child, and such parent refuses to pay you at the time they should pay, and u dare ask for your money, u could be in hot soup. The parent might call the school owners to report that you're harassing them and you will get the blame. In fact, the school owners tell u what to charge them.

The proprietor of the sch is who understands all these, but his wife is different. His wife is so sentimental, biased and emotional and unfair when judging cases. There are three staff there who can never be wrong in her eyes. Three days into my assumption of duty there, I was told about this by some old staff, but I doubted until I found out that what I heard was actually the truth. I believe a Boss should carry everyone along and not love some and despise others. She goes as far as gossipping about her staff with other staff(her right-hand staff).

How can a Proprietoress who was once a teacher in someone's sch boldly tell her staff that their Future end here in her sch, and that the students are now the future. And that the children will be more successful than the teachers? . It tells a lot as to how she sees and perceives her employees and reason she mistreats her staff. She has placed a limit on us that we can't go beyond where we are.

See, I love teaching and God knows. I'm so passionate about this profession despite the fact that it is almost not a lucrative job. I have taught in Nine(9) private schools, in four(4) different states of this country so I'm well experienced by God's grace. But this sch is something else. The only good thing is that they don't owe salaries. Never.

Well it's wrong to flog a student tho

No violence in British or American curriculum schools

In moderate private schools , flogging is allowed in a case of stealing or hooliganism. I will support that.

However teaching job is not worth it in Nigeria.

Very few exceptions
My friend shut up there !! That's how people like you raise idiots and problematic humans to the society. As long as a child, does not see any consequences for his or her actions, they will never see any reason not to flout your orders or instructions. This I have seen several times. At young age you must be serious with disciplining them. You must use punishment and flogging when neccessary(I do not mean unnecessary beating the child out of hate or anger). But for some children, it is absolutely necessary to whoop them when needed.
Infact, i have personally seen a jss3 girl boost that she will never obey her mother, because mummy will not even do anything when she comes back.

The teachers there are all women. We are 42 teaching staff in bothe the creche, kindergarten, nursery, primary and secondary. Out of the 42 staff, only five a men, including me. But even the men still act as women. They are controlled by the school owners. Three weeks ago, I was informed that I would be given management position in the school, but I politely turned it down. Why? Because as a management staff, my suggestions will never be given due consideration so what's the point? There's also no special salary for that. I told my Boss, that I will always come up with ideas to better the sch and act the way he wants, but I can't accept the role of being a management staff. He was shocked.
Now we can't have a union. They won't allow it. Cos they will see it as a rebellious union. I first taught in 2012. And after a term in that sch, I was made the dean of studies and chairman of staff welfare. I was so so close to the sch owners and was highly influential cos I was extremely dedicated to duty. That's the sch I will never forget . A great sch who wants discipline and sanity

Do you know what you just taught the child you felt you were correcting? It is that if he was in position of power over the other, it becomes OK to use violence against/abuse the other child.

Look at Nigeria today..Oga/madam dey slap gateman, driver, employee...Politicians dey slap and belittle ordinary citizens...husbands dey beat their wives..wives dey torture house helps...Police dey beat, torture and even shoot people wey dem no like...😩

✓ Then he shouldn't try to give RULES in another person's school.
Anywhere I work, THE RULES MUST FAVOUR ME. If you like don't disciple your students, thats your own problem. The moment I realise your principles are against my life, AM OUT.
✓ SECONDLY, most schools dont have RIGID RULES as they're just business centres. The rules you shouldn't joke with arr the ones that affect you personally. If the OP continues to rebel against SCHOOL OWNERS, he'll find himself out of job very soon.
That's why I kept referring him back to sticking to School rules and policies. I think many Nigerian workers, teachers included are not mentally prepared to sticking to rules/laws. That is why many go in to an environment thinking only of themselves rather than what is expected of them. undecided

2. if the School does not have rigid rules, then it is opportunity for the teachers to come together as a team to either endure ministry-level rules are at least enforced no matter what? After all, it is for their own good since they will each be held legally responsible when they violate at least that. undecided

✓ You compare a student to a teacher, your level of understanding is too shallow.
Here's something you obviously don't know. 😁😁😁😁😁

Under the Nigerian Constitution, a student is a citizen same as his teacher. They both have the same rights. You pretending one is a god over the other is all part of the particular mental delusion you hold to, a delusion in no way recognized by the Law even in Nigeria. Under Nigerian Law, if one citizen assaults another citizen, the victim is legally right to have his assaulter charged and prosecuted for the assault. 😁

✓ Different scenarios here.. ur story is about school fees, the op story is about over pampering, not taking responsibility from the students, the head of the school neglecting the crucial teaching needed to groom the kids, ridiculing the teachers just before the kids, rendering the teachers powerless and useless before the kids...

This is different from school fees scenarios.
You didn't pay attention at all. OP's story is instead about how his particular reasoning is not favored by the methods employed at the school he is at. When OP signed on to the job, the agreement he had was that he would stick to standards as set by the school in compliance with Ministry of Education rules. But, from his reveal, OP disregards the rules to impose his ideas and standards instead. undecided

There is nothing wrong with pampering kids as long as it is not in violation of the law. The most important thing here is abiding by the Law/Rules when it comes to training the kids and OP himself confesses from his many statements that he does not care much about that. undecided

■ How is this connected with mannerless kids? I don't support beating kids for school fee, failing to buy textbooks and other nonsense some schools do.
■ WE ARE TALKING ABOUT DISRESPECTFUL AND MANNERLESS KIDS THAT SEE NO WRONG IN THEIR DOINGS!
Under Nigerian Law, a kid is a citizen of Nigeria with the same rights as every adult in that land. According to the Law, when one citizen violates or assaults another citizen, the law is clear that such an act is criminal. undecided

I know you lot do not like abiding by the law as you would rather hold to delusions not recognized by your laws. But if a teacher flogs/assaults a student and the student takes that teacher to the police, do you know or even understand that could mean the end of that teacher's career and maybe even jail term? undecided

■ no problem, sir am a teacher and a trained one I worked personally with a retired professor of philosophy of education. He taught me study technology coined by one the compass people Lord Ron Hubbard . I learnt a lot from him during my days as an undergraduate and will always appreciate him till this day. I would have flogged Tiwa savage and davido as a teacher if they are spoilt. I go beat shege banza comot their body. And I know I will resign.
■ Because am like Jose mourinho in the workspace I have never worked more than 2 years in an establishment. I get bored easily. No matter how much am paid. I always leave.
■ Back to the point, laissez - faire approach to discipline has never worked in education you can ask anyone who is an educationist. Works for a short while when it backfires you will lose your respect and pedigree as a teacher. We were beaten in school did we die. We shouldn't bring western culture into our African culture. Traditional education which is a form of informal education it is important you flog and punish a child who defiant and stubborn. Make we stop this trend of spare the rod. This spoilt brat needs to be dealt with. Most of their parents don't give them the required basic home training. There is nothing like softer discipline. Even the form of softer discipline which B.F skinner is also not a soft discipline and it doesn't work on Nigerian students.
■ Even in military settings they put the trainees under unfavorable conditions in order to get the best out of them.
■ But some wings here want us us overpamper children by buying ice cream for them when they call me a stupid teacher
1. By the time they legally have you charged and prosecuted, and make certain you rot in jail for as long as is possible, you will never again think in your life to raise your hands against another human being, ever! undecided

2. That speaks volumes of these delusions you continue to carry along with you. undecided

3. In almost the entire country of the U.S. not a single student was flogged in the schools over the last 30 years. The vast majority of them who are now adults are intelligent, hardworking, law-abiding members of the public who do not take their rights and the law for granted.

Can you say the same of all of those who were flogged in Nigerian school systems over the same period? undecided

4. Nigerian army trainees are constantly abused by their supervising officers as well as those above them. Can you in any way compare the zeal of the average Nigerian army trainee to that of, say an American Army trainee who is subjected mostly to the legal training required for all army trainees? undecided

5. Overpamper? What Overpampering manual do you quote from abeg? When did buying children ice cream amount to overpampering them? Where does it say so in the Overpampering manual you keep quoting from? undecided

1. Nigerian educational system is raising obedient slaves? Many foreign companies in Nigeria would rather hire foreigners than Nigerians in Nigeria. You know why? Because the system as it is DOES NOT raise what you refer to as obedient slaves in any way. Rather, it continues to raise inadequate and incompetent individuals who don't even understand or know to follow rules. Let's be realistic in our assessment of reality abeg! undecided

I saw a video some days ago made by Isaac Fayose on Twitter, I think. He said he opened an Amala restaurant some time ago and put in all he could to make the place work but in just a matter of months, the joint was reduced to nothing by his Nigerian employees. These are people who would have had for themselves good employment, steady income, and even a place to grow had the business gone on to do well, but their general inability to critically reason as humans ought to have led them to consume the business instead. These are people raised and nurtured in Nigeria by your many traditions and your spare-the-rod-and-spoil-the-child system of training. After Fayose was done, he warned that his case was the norm and not the exception, in case someone attempted to write it off as something that only happened to a minority in Nigeria. undecided

2. This much is clear from your responses. You are a typical Nigerian in your handling of information. You twist assumptions in such as way as to make them seem like facts all so you can continue to propagate what are inane ideas. undecided

I was raised in Nigeria by parents who initially believed in the spare-the-rod-and-spoil-the-child system of training until they no longer did. Throughout all of my childhood, I suffered from depression and I even knew of some in the small community I was raised in who more than likely committed suicide from depression even though the vast majority of people around would rather believe Abiku and spirits were to blame for those deaths. Many of the deaths were of people who were raised according to the same system that my parents initially raised me with. The flogging and harsh punishment probably led some to eventually take their lives too... who knows. But what I do know is that there was no Abiku among them—sickle-cell-ers were rarely caned— and most of the dead didn't even have powers to commune with spirits to begin with. But many of them were said to have gone to bed, never to wake up again; at least that is the story that the public was fed of those deaths in that small community of Ikorodu where I grew up.
