Man Takes Wrong Bus And Cries For 2 Hours After U.S. Visa Rejection by lagostrendboy(op): 6:55am On Nov 11, 2024
A Nigerian man recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) a tough memory from years ago when, after being denied a U.S. visa, he mistakenly boarded a bus to Ajah instead of Abule Egba. He had used all his business savings to apply for a student visa, making the rejection especially painful. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Reflecting on the moment, he wrote, “I’ve been to the U.S. embassy before, but after they gave me the rejection letter, I didn’t even realize I got on a bus to Ajah instead of Abule Egba 😭😭😭. I spent two hours crying in my room after using all my business money to apply and pay school fees.”

His story resonated widely, with many people in the comments sharing similar experiences and offering support.

See some reactions below:

@Nana_Remi03: “My question is, why will they reject someone who has paid school fees?😭😭😭It’s wickedness.”

@FEfretuei: “She cried but then again she will still cry when she thinks of the money spent.”

@Officialregha: “Chai! But them suppose they refund somethings back now. Ahn ahn!”

@Okey75001524: “Me wey be say them shift my appointment date go February 2025, I won die when I received the news.”

@MaryAkinola15: “I saw it too. Failed japa plans can mess up your finances for years except you have a high paying job. She go cry the cry for months.”

@amra_gold: “Omor when they denied me in 2022. I was walking out and people outside were asking me “Nne did they give you”. I didn’t even answer anybody. Was holding my tears till my sister called and said “don’t cry oo”. Na then windows of heaven open. Ahhhhh.”

@adegoke_ife: “Baba that period, the world go quiet. You just Dey reason you life, money wey you don spend and all your plans.”

The sooner we realise that these foreign embassies are using us to cashout the better for us.

In 2023 about 150,000 Nigerians applied for US Visa and according to the US embassy the application fee is about $185 which is about N305k and only about 5% of the 150,000 people that applied were successful, meaning about 142,000 application were rejected which amounts to just over $26M.

Meaning the US embassy in Nigeria made over $26M in 2023 from rejected Visas alone.

If we had a government, every embassy would be ordered to refund all or 90% of all rejected Visa fees. But here we are, we keep making money for these countries while we're still indebted to them via loans.

I just have to modify to add that in naira that amounts to over NGN43B, that's the allocation of an entire state in a year, and that's for the United States alone, now do your calculation for the UK and others, you'll understand why these people will never allow Nigeria to work.

Sorry

The day I was denied enh, it was clear that the consular decided she won't give us (myself and others that walk to her counter) that day. It was like a drama, the man before me did not want to go to her (the consular's) counter and I think that made her more angry and she continued to deny every other person.

I walked from bonny camp to Adeniji Adele that day, I even reached 3rd mainland bridge, then walked back to Adeniji to board a bus going to the mainland.

It was so terrible.

I think the FG needs to pass a bill of getting a 50% refund if the visa was denied and more over the school should have refunded the money or probably help to facilitate the visa procurement... Either way our government should help to get a refund if visa denied.

That guy could be lying. In the US, you don't have to pay tuition fees before getting a visa. They expect you to get to school or even enjoy all your classes before paying your tuition fees.

America no be UK because they know that visa rejection rate is high. They even deny visas to students who got scholarships.

Lol… if you’re trying to do the right thing, you’ll end up being poor…

You can do the right thing later in life when you’ve gained enough ground to stand, our politicians understand the logic, our pastors understand this logic

But we charge them fees too.

A Nigerian in the US recently organized his American Church members ( it's a mostly white Baptist Church) on a trip to Nigeria for charity work.
The Embassy guy demanded $600 per person or no Visa even though Visa fees are officially about $150.

He told me friend that there is nothing he can do but pay up.
