Demolition: No Amount Of Protests Can Stop Us – Wike by adenigga(op): 2:55am On Nov 11, 2024
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has vowed that no amount of protest can stop the bid to sanitise the nation’s capital.

Daily Trust reports that last week, task force acting on the orders of the minister demolished the Ruga settlement along Airport Road, Lugbe, triggering outrage.

Protesters, led by an activist, Deji Adeyanju, had hit the streets while accusing FCT task force, known as “Operation Sweep,” of heavy-handed tactics.

Adeyanju condemned the demolition, highlighting that homes were burned and property worth millions was destroyed.

“There is no justification for this demolition. We appeal to President Bola Tinubu to consider the plight of the displaced residents, who are barely surviving,” Adeyanju had said.

But speaking when he visited the demolished settlement, late Sunday, the Minister, who was accompanied by top security chiefs in the territory, said he was at the site to see things for himself.

Addressing the victims, the minister said there was no going back in the exercise, adding that the settlement had been identified as a security threat.

He said no government would allow such illegal settlement to continue to exist with report of security threat, especially to the rail corridor.

The Minister told the victims that no amount of blackmail or protest would stop the clearing exercise.

He, however, asked the spokesperson of the victims to bring five of their representatives to the FCTA Secretariat for dialogue on what would be done for them.

Earlier, the spokesperson of the victims, Abba Garu, had told the minister that they had been living in the area for the past 35 years.

He said about 10,000 people were affected by the exercise with all their property and business destroyed.

He pleaded with the minister to provide alternative for them, adding that they were ready to move to another place.

Wike doesn't understand FCT......

The poor people have rich relatives.

He doesn't know that the poor people will fight back...

The people now believe that, Tinubu sent Wike to demolish houses at will....

He should face Rivers state alone. Bringing fight to the Abuja people will not be funny.

People in Rivers want him to concentrate in Abuja. I think we need to come together and draw up a term of reference for him.

Wike should take it easy. Demolishing people's houses and businesses because of security is a no no.
Looks like sombody is seriously on a land grabbing venture in Abuja. From the Julius Berger land now to this giving flimsy excuses for their land grabbing venture.

Do not let the headline mislead us. How many ministers will go on a site verification visit? He spoke to those affected. He offered an olive branch - they should select 5 persons among them to come to his office for discussions on a resolution. He cited security reasons and the train line that is close. It is painful for ppl to loose so much at this time and I hope and pray the minister listens to the people and compensates them. Abuja has land.

Wike is someone who knows his work. He rarely embarks on something without first hand getting certain specific details and information.
I can tell you of all the Ministers and former governors , Wike is someone who sits down to read and digest information before acting or he gets someone who briefs him steadily without reservations based on what he wants to know and act upon to be able not to be at fault from his own end.

Wike is my man but I don't support this his demolition without relocation plan. The country is already hard as it is, government should be able to overlook somethings for now till things get better. Nobody chose to live in a shanty but na condition make crayfish bend.

Such senseless talk. So the only way to curb a "security threat" is by demolishing people’s houses? Many of these leaders clearly lack sense; the painful thing is seeing the number of Nigerians supporting this wickedness. They’ll always cheer on their oppressors until those same oppressors come for them and their loved ones.

This man had funds to build houses for overfed judges in the same Abuja, but now you are demolishing a settlement that affects 10,000 Nigerians because of "security threats"?

There's nothing wrong with the government demolishing disgusting places in Abuja. For crying out loud, Abuja is the capital city of a country. However, those locals ought to be resettled or properly compensated before the demolition exercise begins.

If judges rely on Wike to build them fancy homes in Abuja with government funds, how do you expect locals not to live in poor conditions?

A broke yet corrupt country will always put the cart before the horse. Right now, Nigeria is no longer among Africa’s top 15 wealthiest countries. Our GDP has fallen too sharply to paint any false picture of wealth that we clearly don’t have (we did, until politicians looted the country dry).

If you must build homes for judges and pay rent for SSAs and politicians in Abuja, then get ready to do same for the real owners of Abuja. We are wasting monies on unproductive corrupt crooks, but want the real hustlers and owners of the land to catch up with corruption. How??
