Peter Obi Under Fire by Men of God Over Church Vigil Statement

Main Source: https://globalnewsinternational.com.ng/peter-obi-under-fire-by-men-of-god/

In a recent interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, suggested that church vigils should be replaced with night shifts to boost productivity. This proposal has stirred strong responses from pastors and religious leaders who feel Obi’s comment oversimplifies a deep-rooted part of Nigerian society.

Religious Leaders Respond with Criticism and Concern

Joshua Mike-Bamiloye, a prominent Christian media figure and son of the famous Christian filmmaker Mike Bamiloye, did not hold back in his reaction. Calling Obi's remarks “misguided” and even “insulting,” Mike-Bamiloye argued that the church’s role goes far beyond productivity concerns. He questioned why church gatherings would be singled out, emphasizing that if boosting productivity was truly the aim, other social activities should come under similar scrutiny. Mike-Bamiloye reminded audiences that vigils are typically held on Fridays, a day chosen precisely to minimize disruptions to work schedules.

Pastor Emmanuel Iren echoed a similar sentiment, sharing that for many Nigerians, church gatherings offer far more than a religious experience—they are spaces for community, hope, and spiritual growth. He emphasized that these gatherings provide purpose and motivation, which he believes are essential components of individual and societal productivity.

Prophet Joshua Iginla also weighed in, noting that Nigeria’s issues with economic productivity cannot be boiled down to religious gatherings. Vigils, he pointed out, provide an outlet for emotional support and resilience, which ultimately contribute to the overall well-being of society. He urged leaders to address larger systemic issues, such as economic reform and job creation, as more effective solutions to Nigeria’s productivity challenges.

A Larger Debate on Balancing Faith and Productivity

Peter Obi’s comments have brought a long-standing issue into the spotlight: balancing deep religious devotion with the need for economic growth in a developing country. Supporters of Obi’s viewpoint argue that while religion is valuable, excessive focus on it—at the expense of time that could be dedicated to work—might contribute to Nigeria’s productivity issues. They feel Obi’s approach reflects a practical perspective, even noting that he, too, has shown respect for religious traditions by attending church events during his campaign.

On the other hand, critics believe church gatherings enrich Nigerian culture and society, creating a sense of unity that can, in turn, enhance productivity. They argue that rather than reducing religious gatherings, efforts should go toward fostering work opportunities and creating policies that better support the workforce. They see faith not as an obstacle to productivity but as an essential part of a balanced life that nourishes both spirit and mind.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s Future

Obi’s comments have opened a meaningful dialogue about productivity, faith, and culture. As Nigeria faces pressing economic challenges, this conversation sheds light on how the nation can move forward without compromising its unique cultural and religious fabric. Ultimately, finding a balance between work and faith may become a defining issue as the nation seeks pathways to growth and prosperity.

Having try so hard to use the church to get presidency that failed because the core Northerner Muslim voted against him, he now want to pacify them for vote in 2027, so he needed to castigate the church he ran to and even attend various programs and he even with his famous Christian take back your country slogan. Obi is definitely a decisive and a clown. He will never be president of Nigeria. Why did he not tell those churches during campaigns of turn night prayers to night shift. He is just a Conny criminal. He has nothing to offer. If Tinubu didn't rejig the economy, I will gladly support and vote for Atiku.
Even in your deepest privacy, you know that Obi will rule Nigeria better than 98% of everyone who has shown or is showing interest in occupying Aso Rock. But, you Nigerians are legendary at rejecting good things so that you can enjoy complaining against the bad things. It looks like a curse actually. No quarrels though cos I don't have that time.

Sometimes, we should learn to see things for what they are. Virtually all the pastors out criticizing him for that statement supported and even ENDORSED HIM during election.

He messed up with that statement. He's sure giving BATists something to be happy about.

Religion take precedent in our society today because poIiticians in different facets faiIed woèfuIIy in delivering their duties and this includes Peter Obi who was a coIIosaI faiIure as governor for 8 soIid years without creating productivity in Anambra, his Iàck of productivity creation in Anambra is the reason why people are leaving Anambra in huge numbers in search of greener pastures, but as usual, he claims to have solution to everything because he is seeking for a new office, I like the fact that he's àttàcking the church, this same churches were busy sounding him as messiah sent from God, they have seen how confused thèîr messiah is now.

The truth will always hurt some.

Where I live, people work on Sunday morning and have little time for church, and night virgil is not exactly a thing here.

They'd rather be using the sweat of their brow to productively put food in their belly than be dancing and wailing over night in some church for manna to fall from heaven. And they are not sleepy when they turn up for work.

It does apply to me. I am a Nigerian after all, and I have family who would stupidly spend time night vigilling instead of resting from a hard days work.

And no, I am not an agbado muncher, despite the agbadorian being my tribesman.

Obi lost election because he was hoping on the court to reinstate him, forgetting that politics on a national level is different from politics with kinsmen…
The same thing atiku has failed to understand… to win presidential elections, you must be ready to do the following:

1. Grab the ballot box
2 Grab power by all means
3 Intimidate the citizens
4 Bribe the officials, especially inec chairman and the judges
5. Kidnap , threaten, cajole the officials that refuse to accept bribe and even their families are not left out

6. Be the one the citizens dislike

If you do these 6 things, be rest assured you’re the next president of Nigeria,

Ok, let’s replace night shifts with vigils.

Vigils developed China, Norway, USA, Australia, Western Europe.

Let’s pray harder and work less. Manna will fall from heaven and everyone will be well fed.

This is quite a naive take. The discussion here isn't about Obi's policies. We supported and voted Obi because of that. It's no question.

But this is politics. His policies and what have you would not win him an election in Nigeria. His politicking is what would. No one wins election without by giving his political enemies the resources to pitch him against his loyal voters.

You have to bracket emotions and look at politics more maturely. Obi is not yet president. We have the presidency to take.

Wake up and smell the coffee and stop this complaining politics. Let the truth be bare faced. Obi goofed. He lost loyalists.
