How IS-Affiliated IS Sahel Expands Presence in Sokoto and Kebbi, Enforcing Strict Control and Smuggling Operations

The Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), also known as IS Sahel, has reportedly intensified its influence across several local government areas in Sokoto State, Nigeria, with growing evidence of its expanding operations in neighboring Kebbi State as well.

Known locally as *Lakurawa*, or "recruits" in Hausa, this group has begun enforcing strict mandates on residents, while reportedly smuggling essential supplies to terrorist networks throughout the Sahel region.

In Sokoto State, IS Sahel has entrenched itself in the Gudu, Tangaza, Silame, Binji, and Illela LGAs.

Zagazola reports that the terrorists has banned vigilante activities within these communities, effectively disabling local security responses, and instituted Sharia-based mandates.

The group demands *zakkat* on livestock, requiring residents to give up one cow for every thirty they own, collected directly by group members. Additionally, strict dress codes have been imposed, with women instructed to wear hijabs and men required to maintain long beards and shortened trousers.

These developments underscore an alarming expansion of extremist control, previously seen with Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) in the region, and further indicate the spread of ISIS and Al-Qaeda-linked factions from the broader Sahel area into Nigeria.

Zagazola Makama has previously reported how the IS Sahel operates a significant smuggling network from Kebbi State’s Dole-Kaina, a border town connecting Nigeria and Niger.

Large quantities of fuel, ammunition, and other supplies are reportedly transported across Nigeria’s borders, with items reaching terror groups across the Sahel and West African regions.

These supplies pass through Niger and, in some instances, Benin Republic to reach Kompienga, a province in eastern Burkina Faso, which is a known hotbed for terrorist activity.

The Nigerian is increasingly challenged by the routes used for arms trafficking in the North West, which allow bandits and terror groups to sustain their operations.
Nigerian Military Identifies New Terror Group Operating in Kebbi, Sokoto

The Nigerian military says it has identified the new terror group operating in Kebbi and Sokoto States, according to a statement by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations.

General Buba said that the terror group is reportedly affiliated with jihadi factions in Mali and Niger, raising security concerns in the northwestern region of the country.

He linked the emergence of the group to political instability in Mali and Niger, which has fueled the spread of extremist elements into Nigeria.

This group is a direct fallout of the political instability in these neighboring countries," he explained, adding that the military is monitoring the group’s activities and developing strategies to counter any threat to national security.

Airstrike on ISWAP/BHT Camps in Borno

The Nigerian Air Component from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK)  conducted strategic airstrikes against ISWAP camps in southern Lake Chad, resulting in significant militant casualties.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the  targeted strikes on November 6 focused on camps led by notorious ISWAP commander Usman Russia, specifically hitting locations at Kwallaram and Arainna Ciki islands near Jibilarram in Marte Local Government Area.

Imparcable sources who relayed the ground assessment report that the attack was highly successful, confirming that over 70 ISWAP fighters were neutralized at the Kwallaram camp.

He noted that while  the exact number of casualties at Arainna Ciki remains uncertain, sources indicate that several terrorists were also killed in this coordinated assault.

This successful Airstrikes could be described as arguably one of the most successful strikes undertaken by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai.

Meanwhile, following  the strike, on November 7, reports emerged that ISWAP had mobilized additional fighters from its Sambisa wing, regrouping in the areas of Kusuma and Sigir in Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area.

Both locations are within the territory under Usman Russia’s control, with mobilized fighters reportedly including elements from Sambisa Forest and northern border areas of Cameroon. The group’s intent remains unknown.

Exercise Grand African NEMO 2024:

Nigerian Navy Leads Efforts to Secure the Gulf of Guinea

The official start of Exercise Grand African NEMO 2024 took place on Monday, November 4, 2024, with an opening ceremony aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) KADA. In his keynote address, Rear Admiral MG Oamen highlighted the exercise’s vital role in enhancing maritime security and supporting blue economic growth in the Gulf of Guinea through the collaborative Yaoundé process. This initiative united naval forces from Nigeria , the United Kingdom , and Spain in a coordinated response to critical security issues impacting the region.

The exercise focused on addressing major threats, including illegal fishing, arms trafficking, oil bunkering, drug trafficking, and hostage scenarios. These persistent challenges pose significant risks to regional stability and economic growth, emphasizing the need for a unified approach among Gulf of Guinea nations and international partners. Grand African NEMO 2024 also reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening partnerships with neighboring nations’ navies and coast guards, providing a robust platform for enhancing regional security.

Operation Haskanite: Boko Haram Ambush Claims Chadian general and Senior Officers

Atleast  six high-ranking officers and soldiers of the Republic of Chad  lost their lives, with several others wounded, in what is described as a violent assault on Chadian armed forces by the Boko Haram terrorists.

Zagazola understands that the ambush occurred on Friday November, shortly after President Mahamat Idriss Déby  departed the area to return urgently to the capital, Ndjamena.

Among the deceased are senior officers, including General Youssouf Abdoulaye Kari, General Adoum Issa, Colonel Lony Allatchi, Lieutenant Colonel Gorou Wardougou, Adam Nassour Mahamat, and Idrissa Malloum.

The attack also left key figures wounded, such as General François Tatiko, General Moubarack Formalick, Bokhit Bachar, Lieutenant Jean Pierre Medar, and Ibrahim Ali.

General Youssouf Abdoulaye Kari, a veteran respected by his forces and a former member of Chad’s contingent in Mali, was among those killed, leaving a significant void in the military leadership.

The Chadian Army spokesperson, General Issakha Acheikh has issued a statement regarding murderous ambush against the Chadian troops but refused to provide further details.

He said that the General Staff of the Armed Forces brings to the attention of national and international opinion that after a meticulous reorganization of the units of the Defence and Security Forces, by the President of the Republic, Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces and, the well-ordered launch of Operation Haskanite to dislodge the Boko Haram terrorists from Lake Chad, a first clash took place today, Saturday 09 November 2024.

He explained  that after a few hours of fighting, several terrorist elements were neutralised and the raid continued while he added that the detailed balance sheet will be communicated to you later.

ACTING COAS EMBARKS ON MAIDEN OPERATIONAL TOUR TO TANGAZA, ILLELA ... Calls for collaboration to end security challenges

The Acting Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede today, Sunday 10 November 2024, embarked on an operational tour to Sokoto State in the 8 Division Area of Responsibility. The Acting COAS on arriving Sokoto in the early hours of the day, immediately proceeded to Forward Operations Base Tangaza and 248 Battalion in Illela, where he received briefs on the security situation by the General Officer Commanding 8 Division Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose.

Addressing troops deployed in Tangaza and illela, Gen Oluyede commended the troops for their sacrifice and commitment in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency in the North West zone of the country. He disclosed that he was on an operational tour to obtain first-hand information and assessment of the security situation and challenges of the troops. The Army Chief assured them of his full support and encouragement to decisively deplete the activities of terrorists and insurgents in their respective areas of responsibility and the North West zone in general. He charged the troops to shun any form of complacency that could jeopardize ongoing operations to overcome the security challenges bedeviling the region.

The Acting COAS, while interacting with the Chairman Tangaza Local Government Area, Honorable Bashir Salihu, traditional heads and heads of security agencies at Illela urged for synergy and collaboration with the troops. He called on the people to support the troops with credible information, adding that it is with their support that the troops will effectively protect them and secure the nation as a whole. "Nigerian Army is the people's Army and Nigeria belongs to all of us, without support of the locals, Nigerian Army cannot succeed. We must collectively do all it takes to defend our country" Gen Oluyede clarified.
