The continent of America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer who was the first to propose that the lands discovered by Christopher Columbus were a separate continent:

Discovery
Vespucci explored the Americas in the early 1500s and concluded that the continents were separate from Asia. He wrote letters to a friend in Europe describing his travels and the new continent, which he called the "New World".

Naming
In 1507, German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller named the new continent "America" on a map, a Latinized version of Vespucci's name. The map is often called "America's birth certificate".

Legacy
Other cartographers followed Waldseemüller's lead, and the name "America" became standard on maps of the new continents. Vespucci's reputation as an explorer and navigator grew, and he was made master navigator of Spain in 1508. He died of malaria in Seville in 1512.

America is also inscribed on the Paris Green Globe (or Globe vert) which has been attributed to Waldseemüller and dated to 1506–07: as well as the single name inscribed on the northern and southern parts of the New World, the continent also bears the inscription: America ab inuentore nuncupata (America, named after its discoverer).

St-Dié-des-Vosges is a small, leafy town in the Meurthe valley in north-east France. It lies 68km south-west of Strasbourg in France, 93km north-west of Basel in Switzerland and 74km north-west of Freiburg in Germany.
