There is something i don't understand about Nigerians. How are people still living their lives in these conditions. It should be mathematically impossible for people to afford to pay for goods at these incredibly inflationary prices but someway somehow, Nigerians still find a way.

Can a Bible believing brother please explain?
I don’t know if I mentioned it here earlier this year or if it was on another platform; the new model/formula being employed by Nigerians to weather the storm is called BBS : Beg , Borrow or Steal .

BEG : A lot of people have sadly resorted to begging just to augment their income to be able to afford their basic needs. People literally beg you at the door of restaurants , supermarkets , in church , in markets where u want to buy food items and even at bus stops for bus stops where u are about boarding a bus.

About 2 months ago one young boy approached me when I was about to enter a restaurant to get food. The boy was hawking Okirika shoes and bags ; he asked I that give him money to get food because he hasn’t made any sales and he’s very hungry . I feared he was probably lying and would gamble with the money so I took him to one of attendants to sell him porridge and meat( cos I felt porridge will fill him ) . Omo! I was shocked with the way the boy rushed the food after he was served . I had to give him 1k after paying for the food and left.

BORROW : A lot of people have borrowed money from Opay, Palmpay and all those soft loan app companies to the extent that they now have negative credit score. That’s why if u are in naija , u will surely get calls from those loan apps making threats and asking u to tell ur friend or relative to pay them back their money with interest. Even people u never thought would ever be in such embarrassing position have no choice but to borrow when bills choke them. Unfortunately those loan companies are very crazy and will go to any length to embarrass their debtors . I’ve narrated how two different companies called me in respect of someone in the past. I know someone who got married to a relative , these useless loan apps sent one of their threatening messages to his mother-in-law that she should tell him to pay back his loan or they will deal with him 🤦‍♂️

STEAL: Petty theft is massively going on lowkey but being underreported in the media . Late last year ; in the very house I stay , one guy stole one of my neighbor’s cooking gas cylinder .

Our landlord doesn’t allow anybody to keep their cylinder indoors so when u move in, u are expected to fix ur cylinder outside while u run the gas indoor with a hose . The neighbor’s son got home from school that day , wanted to warm the food his mum prepared in the morning and noticed the cooker wasn’t responding when he switched it on. The boy checked outside and didn’t find the cylinder so he called his mum. When the mum came back from work she confirmed what the boy said on phone that the cylinder is nowhere to be found.

Fortunately we have CCTV in the compound so we asked Landlord to review the CCTV footage so we can really know what happened fir the sake of our safety going forward . Lo and behold ; we saw one middle aged man walk through the compound gate around 1.30pm in the afternoon when nobody was at home. The guy was well dressed and doesn’t even look like a thief in any way. He walked straight to where the cylinder was, removed regulator, picked it up and exited the compound with it.

Omo! I’ve never seen such smooth operation before in my life . What remained a mystery till date is whether the guy had a key which he used to open the small gate from outside or whether someone carelessly didn’t jam the gate(it’s a jam gate that can only be opened with a key from outside ). We had to change the gate’s lock the next day because we don’t know if the guy still has further mission in the compound . Till date I have not seen anyone that looks like that guy in passing , because CCTV caught his face .

This happened last year o, only God knows the kind of stealing that is going on lowkey in different areas now. I’m sure if such thieves are apprehended , they will claim it was hardship that pushed them into stealing .

We have accepted that it is fake life. My question is how are people still able to live this fake life when prices have multiplied by about 5 while incomes have remained at about the same level? What is the magical arithmetic that is going on?
People keep adjusting. One time a woman I saw in the market asked how much I bought pepper. When I told her, she said this is why she no longer buys. She said she now uses grinded pepper because it's cheaper.

People walk a few kilometers and take public transport to complete the journey.

Parents park their cars at the school in the morning, use public transport to go to work and back, use the car to take the children home.

I also shared the story of a woman who went to the bakery to buy bread because it's 40 or 50 naira cheaper.

And lastly, loans. Almost everyone lives on loans. If it's not GTBs one year loan, it is fairmoney, branch and the likes. And they hardly pay back until they are forced to when they need another loan and they can't because they have outstanding loans.

there are so called 'computer cut' keys that are supposedly more difficult for locksmiths to work with. your regular padlock key can be cut in less than a minute . (then again if you follow lockpicking lawyer on youtube..)

also people are careless. when workers are in the house i move the keys from their usual place because it is likely easy for someone with bad intentions to but the key in putty and get its impression.

the real problem though is you are sharing a compound with multiple people and there is a limit to how you can police them. Also your security guys can be in on it

According to Dayo, you were living a fake life buying indomie all this while, thanks to T-Pain no more fake life. Infact even the golden penny noodles might still be a fake life. We will soon find out.
The price of indomie is what he stated, if you cant afford it there might be options you can afford. At what age did you start eating indomie? Did you die all those years you didnt eat it?

Nigerians have been living fake life since 1999 grin

In 1980s our mothers did not use disposable nappies or sudocrem on us. Na cloth nappy we wear which our mothers had to wash every time we shït grin grin
Omo was for the rich, we used green bar soap
Nothing like golden morn or cereals, we were raised on pap
Cooking gas was for the rich, we used sawdust to cook in Abacha years
Even in 1990s, NEPA brings light like twice a month
All the above has elements of truth so Dayo may not be far off in his fake life thesis cheesy cheesy cheesy
Truth. Most families eat fish as the main source of protein and it was with lunch. And who will give you more than 1 piece of meat/fish for 1 meal?

Almost everyne here posting did not use diapers, they used cotton nappies. which you will rewash for reuse

Golden morn or corn flakes for where? Na pap steady and akara. Then when harvest season comes na Yam. Na when Abacha times reach na that time I begin see people cook cassava to eat. Apparently there was a type of cassava that's safe to eat

Cooking gas for where? Na Kerosene stove in Abacha years we migrated to sawdust, firewood and charcoal

NEPA taking light na normal occurrence, You will have days off where your light wont come on for 1minute, then days on where you light will come on for some time and they will take it like 10 times.. You wont even bother with putting stuff in freezer cos NEPA will destroy your full pot of soup, everything na cook chop and finish in 1-2days

Most of the CL finals in the 90s I no watch the full games because NEPA will surely strike and then I wasn't old enough to stay out till late when the games will finish. So max watch 1st half and run home to wait for NEPA or listen to Larry Echiejile the following morning for scores

CL final 2001 I was living around Otigba street in Ikeja, No light for 1 week. Na for under bridge the following morning I found out that Bayern won

I remember now, there was something called "Half current/Low voltage" where you have to look at your bulb to know if light dey. That counted as a light on days

Between me and you, I am 99% sure the thief gained access into the compound due to carelessness of one of my neighbours but he denied it when myself and another neighbor suggested it.

Here is why: The particular neighbour had someone work on his AC a week before the incident and the AC's location outside is not far from where the cylinder was stolen. When we showed the neighbor the CCTV footage to confirm if the guy is one and same with the AC guy, he denied (albeit unconvincingly).

I think he knows the guy but he doesn't want to be seen as the person who brought a thief into the compound. The thief most likely took his key when he came to work on his AC, used the chance to scan the environment and then figured a period when everyone will be out of the premises.

And in generations before ours, kerosene stove was luxury and people trekked a village away to attend school.

Maybe you'd need go back to the stone age to prove that things could or were worse.

The point is people are saying that despite current technological advancements, their lives are a lot harder than they knew it only 10-15 years ago, and while mobile technology and other trappings of technological advancement are better than what they were several years ago, there's the understanding that basic needs are starting to look like luxury.

Or maybe when Trump says Make America Great Again he's means he wants to take the country back to the good old days of public telephone lines or even Horse drawn carriages.

Two more additional points.

1. Re-use of one use disposable items - I took my wife's pap ingredients to her customer to grind in one of those public-yard compounds. While I was there, one of her neighbours brought out her baby to bathe. She removed the diaper which baby had pooed in, removed the poo and cleaned the diaper with soap and water and hung it on the line to dry.

2. Piecemeal Buying - I didn't know diapers were sold in pieces until this year. I was at a neighbourhood store and a lady came to buy a diaper. Shop owner said it was N150 but she had only N100. I asked him how much the 9pcs pack was and he said N1100 so I told her to pick that and added it to my bill.

You use what you can afford is the issue. If you can afford gas buy it, if you cant use what you can.
When me dey use firewood some in the same Nigeria were using gas. When I was trekking 3km to school daily, some kids my age had drivers who will take them to school, park and wait till they finish school, some were traveling abroad for summer break. I remember when someone told me Atlantic Hall school fees was like N30K around late 80s or early 90s. I could not believe it when ordinary #40 to #100 school fees some couldn't afford for school fees, where was there conscience then?

Outside Nigeria is the headquarter of cutting your clothes to what you can afford. Grown men dey waka inside snow, they turn off heat and sleep in 5 layers of clothes because they can't afford to pay heat

There are so many things I will love to have today but I cannot and I made peace with it

Tinubu Presidency Spends N5.1billion On Purchase Of Another 26 Vehicles To State House In Three Weeks

Document from the public payments portal, Govspend, has shown that the Nigerian presidency under Bola Tinubu spent N5.1billion on buying cars between August 18 and September 9, representing 21 days or three weeks

Data published on the Govspend website showed that the State House paid N3.4billion on August 18, for the purchase of sixteen numbers of 2023/2024 model Toyota Prado, to the State House, Abuja. This would mean that each Prado costs N212million.

On September 9th 2024, N1.7 billion was spent to purchase 10 units of Toyota Camry V4, 2023, to the State House. This would mean that each Toyota Camry cost the government N170 million.

SaharaReporters' review of Public Payments platform Open Treasury portal earlier showed that the Tinubu-led Presidency under the tag “State House” spent the sum of N9.2billion on motor vehicles between in March and May 2024.This would mean that with the N5.2billion spent between August 18 and September 9, joined to the N9.2billion spent between March and May, 2024, the presidency spent N14.4billion on motor vehicles.

Nigeria currently battles with issues around revenue, relying heavily on loans to fund their budget.
SaharaReporters recently reported that Nigeria’s debt profile grew by over N46trillion under the current administration of Bola Tinubu.
Debt servicing which is also a result of reliance on loans also gulped N4.4trillion as of second quarter of 2024.
It is only the presidency that has the exclusive right to live fake life, the citizens need to adjust so T-Pain can continue to enjoy the fruit of his labor.

T-Pain dey buy 2023/2024 Model vehicles while citizens are being advised to cook with firewood and bath with Omo detergent. cool

Truth. Most families eat fish as the main source of protein and it was with lunch. And who will give you more than 1 piece of meat/fish for 1 meal?

Almost everyne here posting did not use diapers, they used cotton nappies. which you will rewash for reuse
