Kano Electricity Company Moves To Disconnect From National Grid. by Masterstroke4(op): 6:24pm On Nov 14, 2024
Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has unveiled plans to break away from the national grid.
The company disclosed that it is entering into a partnership to build a 100MW safe grid to protect its customers.
The Safe Grid will be enabled by embedded electricity generation in its network to ensure security within the network.

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has finalised plans for a partnership with an initial $100 million investment to develop a 100MW Safe Grid for Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states, offering 24-hour electricity to customers.
The grid will serve industries, commercial centres, and critical government infrastructure and eliminate the need to rely on the national grid.

The company disclosed that the move is due to the lingering challenges the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) faces in supplying power to its franchise.
It says it is getting less than half of its allocation from the grid, disrupting its customers, institutions, and businesses and challenging its financial performance.

DisCo disclosed that it collects between N9 billion and N12 billion monthly from consumers, but the grid collapses have affected its revenue, and it now fears losing some key customers.
According to the firm, embedded electricity generation in its network will enable the Safe Grid to ensure security and eliminate risks attached to absolute dependence on the national grid.
Kano DisCo collects about N9bn and N12bn monthly from consumers, but the grid collapse has affected its revenues. It fears some key customers will soon abandon the grid unless something is done.
KEDCO says the project will build the first 20MW power plant with Utilita under an emergency project costing $20 million and become operational at the end of this year, beginning supply for the safe grid.
It said the units are already available, and the project development is ramping up ahead of installation and commissioning.
KEDCO begins negotiation for 10MW wind farm.
“Buyers wanted:” NDIC sets date to begin sale of Heritage Bank assets, lists those eligible to buy According to BusinessDay, the electricity firm would also purchase power for the safe grid from the 10MW Haske Solar Power Plant and the 16MW capacities of the Tiga and Challawa Hydroelectric power projects, bringing the initial supply in the safe grid to 46MW.
Additionally, the electricity company said it is negotiating with the Ministry of Power to take over and complete the 10MW Katsina Wind Farm project and supply it to the safe grid/ National grid collapse 11 times in 2024 KEDCO said a further 54MW will be supplied via additional gas and solar power plant projects.
Experts say the move by the electricity company company is commendable following the frequent collapse of the national grid.
In 2024, the national grid suffered 11 collapses, causing widespread disruptions to businesses and households.
Ikeja Electric slashes electricity tariff for Band A customers.

Wonderful news. The competitive, free market and merit-driven Nigeria PBAT wants is taking shape. No region will want to be exposed publicly as laggardly or parasitic whereas it was easy for them all to hide under 'one Nigeria' inefficiency previously.

Today, with more autonomy in areas like power supply, regions are free to be as successful or as failed as they wish to be. No excuses going forward.

If the North can finally start taking responsibility for it's own progress and development, there is no excuse for any other region. Good development. Kudos to the Northern States involved if they pull this off.

One branch of defunct Star Papermill in Aba alone uses 18 Mwatts of electricity to run 4 lines and how will 100Mwatt serve the industrial cities of Kaduna, Kano and then Jigawa?

Nigeria is not ready for production.

I think GEJ is a decent man. Yet he could not tame the Nigerian monsters that are many thousands, and everywhere, because he does not have that in his leadership locker.

It is nostalgia, because thing worsened, that make many romanticise GEJ till today. Yet the truth is that not bravely tackling even one single fundamental reform makes GEJ one of the originators of the rot Nigeria is experiencing today. Ditto OBJ, Yar Adua and Buhari.

People can hate Tinubu all they want, and I understand because suffering is high currently, but the fact the man has initiated and bullishly defended several fundamental reforms make him ideologically our best President ever.

All Presidents, since OBJ to Buhari, simply wanted to continue the process of giving Nigerians the minimum meaning we will merely keep surviving and never truly live as Canadians, Britons, Americans, Germans and even South Africans do.

People forget Nigeria has several fundamental reforms to enact to begin moving towards developed nation status. All former President did not tackle even one. From subsidy removal, to floating the Naira and harmonising exchange rates as obtains worldwide Etal, they all avoided it.

Yet Tinubu has decided to bell the Cat bravely and bear the wrath of Nigerians, by implementing all fundamentally required reforms, in hope they will thank him later. Only a truly sincere and committed leader of Nigeria will do that. All other President did the minimum, and never rocked the boat, so as to get two term.

Tinubu has put his own second term in jeopardy with tough reforms when he could simply have done what OBJ, GEJ and Buhari had done before him, I.e cruise along without touching major but needed reforms, to get a second term and 8 years as President.

Those who are honest enough should ask why he has taken what appears a suicidal path, with seemingly zero profit towards securing a second term, if not that the man is uncompromisingly determined to ensure Nigeria succeeds.

Very few people knows and appreciates what Tinubu is doing for Nigeria. Nigeria has been decaying silently especially from the beginning of this democracy. It is now some of the issues are being addressed and the solutions needed are more painful. I only pray Tinubu to succeed that when people will start to acknowledge and appreciate his patriotism.

He will get second term.

As he has liberated Nigeria from fuel subsidy and ASUU strikes and dollar subsidy.

Let him relax, win second term, then enter power subsidy removal.
