Fela Durotoye, a Nigerian public speaker, says he worked in the administration of President Bola Tinubu for just six months without receiving a salary.

In October 2023, Tinubu appointed Durotoye as senior special assistant on national values and social justice.

Following Tinubu’s appointment of Daniel Bwala as special adviser on public communications and media, on Friday, some Nigerians on social media criticised the president for appointing a plethora of media aides without considering the cost of governance.

In a 13-man list that went viral on social media, Durotoye was named as one of the media aides to the president.

In an opinion piece published on Monday, Durotoye said his appointment as aide to the president ended in March 2024.

He added that throughout the six months of his appointment as the president’s aide, he didn’t receive any salary, allowance, or upkeep as a government official.

"Like many other issues in the public discourse, social commentary often has the tendency to overgeneralise; and broad assumptions may sometimes lead to errors of misconceptions, misstatements and misinformation," Durotoye said.

"One of such errors is in a recent case study that went viral on social media regarding the current media team of the president, where my name was listed as one of the president's media aides. Unfortunately, this statement needs to be updated to accurately reflect the current media team of the president.

"For clarity, I served briefly in the role of Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Values and Social Justice (SSA-NVSJ) for a tenure of six months, from October 2023 to March 2024.

"When I was invited to serve in this administration, I expressed, as a condition for accepting the call, my desire to NOT receive a salary from the government, as I considered this to be my service to my nation.

"When I finally accepted the role in October 2023, it was on the condition that I would not receive any salary or allowances. During my six-month tenure, I did not accept any government funds for my service, expenses, or upkeep.

"I rented my apartment and took my personal car to Abuja. My utility cost, fuel cost and upkeep were all borne by me and I never requested a reimbursement from the government for any expenses I incurred. Everything I contributed—time, effort, and resources—was paid for by me and my family."

Fela should be given a ministerial position in the next cabinet reshuffle. The guy has been consistent in supporting the government policies.

Well done Sir.

I hope such a story of altruism will inspire others who genuinely desire to serve, not for the glitz, glamor, benefits of the office or ulterior motives.

Re: Fela Durotoye: I Was Tinubu's Aide For Only Six Months And I Worked For Free by emkz(op):
I believe him.

Some of Tinubu's core team are people who believe in him and sacrificed for him. They were with him during the trenches days. Together, they weathered the storm.

It is not unusual for the likes of Fela Durotoye to work for free. But there are some hacks for hire even here on Nairaland who assume that everyone who speaks in favour for Tinubu or the government has been paid or wants to be paid. This is because they are hungry and assume others are like them. They lie between their teeth to justify their hatred and envy that one does not toe their line of national hatred.

However, Fela Durotoye needs to explain to us why he left the job. Did he ask for money and he was not given? Was there a conflict? Why was his exit not announced?

The other reason I am commenting is that someone suggested above that Fela Durotoye be given a prominent position in the next cabinet reshuffle. In the next six months, the administration would be two years. I think the recruitment of ministers needs to be more thorough. Salaries and emoluments need to be slashed drastically, and no official vehicle needs to be provided, except one. No minister actually needs security or that much security. Then no minister should award contracts or disburse money like the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs did. The Bureau of Public Procurement should be in charge of anchoring public bidding of contracts and the process needs to be transparent. Ministerial aides need to be drawn from the civil service cadre to avoid conflicts, and if technical experts need to be hired, they must go through a rigorous interview with the civil service. Once the power to bring memos to the FEC to approve is more rigorous, more people would focus on their other day jobs and leave government jobs alone for serious minded individuals who have something to contribute to national development.

Infact, becoming a director or permanent secretary in the civil service and rising to the highest echelon in the military is more rigorous than ministerial recruitment. Right now, people see ministerial jobs as a place to be politically visible, rather than an area for intense work. That has to change.

President Tinubu, the country is littered with talents, home and abroad. You captured Ali Pate and Tunji Alausa. There are more of them. We need core professionals who can help with policy direction. We also need to

You need to rejig the team. We are confident you'd win the 2027 elections because the opposition parties, as are, do not have their acts together to compete in any national or state election.

Time is going.

Not like I believed him neither do I doubt him, I stay in the middle but you see that your second paragraph, that will be a tall order for the average Nigerian politicians, it's just like hunting for pigs on the moon.

Most Nigeria politicians have nothing left in them to offer and many of them only see politics as a money making ventures, until, there's a massive sensitization across all the strata of the society we will keep moving in fruitless cycle.

Bukola Saraki used same style.

He was shuffling the govt house and his Dad’s house in his 8 year tenure and didn’t own a house to his name in the state. They made so much noise about.

Little did the local indigenes know he was buying up ikoyi high rises and Maitama properties.

He became the Senate President without a “house” 😂
