Hehehe.

Only a movie nerd or film student can appreciate an Akira Kurosawa movie in this day and age.

But that Hard Boiled na another matter. John Woo was the action god of the late 80s and early 90s.

A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2, The Killer, Hard Boiled.

They must have used over 1 million bullets in those 4 movies combined. grin
Anyone willing to appreciate how much film-making technology has advanced and is willing to bear the perceived low visual quality will be in for a treat. With regards to movies, I’ve seen at least one movie from every decade from 1930 till date and I feel the scriptwriters of the classics past really earned their pay.

If you want visually aesthetic and pleasing pictures, watch modern cinema. If you are a purist paying attention to the quality of the scripts, dig into the past!

I watched Casablanca and a Howard Hughes directed movie on a long ass flight to the Middle East and even in Black and White, the story was quality.

One day we would talk about the 3rd term agenda which OBJ's opps usually bring up to denigrate him anytime he goes critical on any president(particularly presidents voted in under the rule of APC). Obasanjo is no a saint and nobody would even try to make him one, but lessons need to be taken from his administration and compare it with what we have today.

We will talk about how the house of assembly acted with independence and stood on the side of the people by kicking out the idea of amending the constitution to allow for OBJ's 3rd term.

We need to talk about how house of assembly has now been reduced to rubber stamp that just does the bidding of whoever heads the executive as president.

As much as the HOA and it's leadership were corrupt back then, they still manage to do their jobs of siding with the people and not just rubber stamping everything like we've witnessed in recent years.
the law of unintended consequences. if you build up a bad system and you are eventually pushed out or overthrown - the victors rarely dismantle it, even if that was their original intention.

to this day the first alien movie is a stone cold classic. same for the thing. in a way martin 'absolute cinema' scorcese was right - cgi has reduced movies to focusing on spectacle rather than a solid story which is how you get rebel moon.

Ibime,

I nor dey pay for Audible again. Download Libby App and login with your library card and you can access a fuckton of free audio books and ebooks.

Currently going through the Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones) by George R.R Martin.

Only caveat is when you borrow books digitally, you only have 14 days to consume it but I like the constraint as it forced me to actually pay attention to the book

No solid story can save bad graphics and poor action sequence. I was watching Rambo 2 the other day and i was irritated. Everything was terrible. I began to question why I enjoyed it back then. You cannot watch old movies and not appreciate how far Cgi has come.

a good movie is a good movie, imho

the difference between a classic and pop

the big problem with cgi is that it does not age well. while movies from the 80s that used practical effects still look good to this day.

and there are movies that have been redone multiple times - 7 samurai stands out in this
I do not disagree but for most people there is a minimum level of picture quality needed to capture their attention. That is why from an artistic point of view movies like Citizen Kane, On the Waterfront, Casablanca are top tier, but they can't be released for the general public in their original format at this time.

I definitely agree that movies with great storylines and excellent acting are more enduring than movies that depend on special effects. Science and technology are ever advancing. Art and technique, not so much.

You make a good point. The storylines were often more original, and the movies were often longer, allowing for more detailed storytelling. That is why for instance, it is currently almost impossible to improve on the Western or Mafia genres.

As someone who has entered the ring several times since I was 18 and had(and won) a white collar fight as recently as 2022, I have a degree of sympathy for him, but he knew the risks.

There's a common saying in any boxing gym - you don't 'play' boxing. I've lost a personal friend to this sport. I've been knocked out myself and I have sent somebody to hospital. I used to go to bed before a fight dreaming about knocking someone's head clean off his shoulders the next day... Sometimes I used to try to do that even in sparring.

Nobody really wants their opponents to suffer long-lasting damage most times, but you also have to be a little bit mad to compete in a sport that encourages the contestants to inflict head trauma on each other. He knew the risks. The game is the game.
It's the same thing with the Chris Eubank v Michael Watson fight in 91. I saw a clip recently of Chris crying and pleading for forgiveness, but Watson what a man! He just echoed what you said here about everything being ok, game is game no hard feelings

He should apologise to us (Nigerians) for not laying the foundational infrastructure needed for the country to advance, otherwise he should stfu. He lacks every moral right to criticise any government. The man irritates the hell out of me.

For books i want to consume without timelines, I just cop it outright. I like to consume fiction books with a timeline but technical/business books I prefer to consume with no timelines.

But I strongly believe you should consume any books you are serious about in classic paper with a highlighter and pen. Too easy to get distracted listening to audio books

lol. No worry when you have children running around the house on your downtime, and you are on the road 3 hours a day, you will review this paper and pen scenario. I haven't read paper book for at least 7 years now

Which foundational insfrastructure are u talking about ? The problem u are having is that u have been sucked-in by APC's propaganda machine to think OBJ's administration was as useless as APC's

Talking about infrastructure, below is what Adelabu a serving minister under the current APC said about OBJ's foundational infrastructure.

Before he came into office, President Bola Tinubu had also accused Obasanjo of spending $16bn on power without corresponding supply of electricity to Nigerians.

But the current Minister of Power, Adedayo Adelabu, said the former President spent $8bn in the nation’s electricity sector, and not the $16bn being reported.

He said it was good that Obasanjo invested the money back then in constructing of power plants across the nation.

Adelabu, who spoke on Channels Television’s News Night programme said the power plants built under Obasanjo’s administration are still visible, stating that seven out of the 10 protects were completed and enough to serve the nation.

However, he regretted the failure to maximise the capacity of these power plants to generate more electricity.

Speaking on the controversial $16bn spending by the Obasanjo administration, Adelabu said, “While I will not sit here and give you facts about what transpired, I was not in the sector then, I can tell you that the 10 Nigerian Integrated Power Projects under President Olusegun Obasanjo, are there for us to see. And I’m aware they spent over $8bn out of the so-called $16bn that people bandied around. We can see those plants today.

“We have two in Olorunsogo, that is Papalanto in Ogun State. We have two in Omotosho, close to Ore in Ondo State. We have one in Benin. We have Egbema that has not been completed. We have in Calabar. We have about 10 of them. I know seven of them were completed and they are under the management of the Nigeria Delta Power Holding Company today. They have capacity totalling about 5,000MW.

“It was good we made those investments then but the issue is, have we really optimised the benefit of those investments. I would say no!” he said.

OBJ may have his flaws, but certainly he didn't dump this country into the economic abyss we currently find ourselves. You should focus ur anger at people responsible for that. OBJ's tenure was characterized by economic prosperity contrary what APC propaganda machine would have u believe. The facts are there for objective people to see.

It is also important to watch remastered versions of movies. If you are watching a 480p version of a movie on a modern TV it will not look good.

No they shouldn't, they must continue shouting OBJ's name with eyes red and mucus dripping from their nose.

People that are known for tapdancing around the many evils of the APC-led government will suddenly find their voice and righteous anger when OBJ gets mentioned...at least OBJ gave you economic prosperity while rigging elections, what have you gotten from APC despite them rigging elections blatantly?

OBJ didn't leave a legacy of good elections, the one Yaradua and GEJ left nko?

They must continue shouting at a ship that's sailed while APC rapes their present and future, that is what's important right now.

What is economic prosperity with just an exponential growth in Gdp without insignificant infrastructure?. Abeg miss me with trying to project obj as an economic genius.

Obj didn't perform any magic on the economic. In 2006,our population was barely 150m and we were exporting over 2m barrels per day while selling at record high. Now the population is over 250m and struggling to export to 1.4m barrel per day with decline in oil prices. Whether you like it or not,it is on the record that he embezzled $16b to produce darkness, which we are currently still experiencing today.

The thing is APC is so good with propaganda that people don't even know when they are getting distracted with their propaganda.

As in.... People that lived well under OBJ will be joining Tinubu and his appointees to call OBJ names while everybody can clearly see the misgovernance happening under the same APC.

I never see this kind thing before. Calling OBJ names from today till tomorrow will not cauterize the wound of hardship APC's government has inflicted on everyone.

Look at u struggling to argue urself out of a box. So by your own admission OBJ's tenure witnessed exponential GDP growth but somehow he is not an economic genius ba? So what is he ? Economic dumbass? Or better still let me ask you: What is Tinubu? economic genius raise to power 100?

You just have problem with accepting facts. You claimed he didn't have any significant infrastructure to show (which is false) , I showed u just one which is still visible till today as confirmed by a serving minister......Yet u still want to stick ur uninformed view. When u are ready to disabuse ur mind, u will read the several rebuttals OBJ has done on the $16billion story.

Look at you talking about Nigeria struggling to export 1.4m barrels per day as if that in itself is not a failure of the current leadership of the country. If Nigeria could export enough crude during OBJ's era it only means his government had a grip on security back then.

You na OG for real for real

John Woo was legendary and his influence was still felt in the mid to late noughties from the Matrix to almost all of Jet Lis movies in his Hollowood Era to video games most notably Max Payne. I would even argue that any video game that has a 'rage mode' from OG God of War to Spacemarines 2 is paying homage to John Woo the god of slow motion.
