I have had encounters with them twice, and observed countless beatings to other citizens. I grew up next to, and spent all my time in Navy Camp.

You see military general you dey provoke dey sit-down inside car dey bring out camera instead of showing proper comportment. You think say na Yankee you dey? Dem no slap am well, not because he is morally wrong, but he needs the slap for his own safety in dealing with military men going forward.
Which Yankee? Last last na Hashtag and kneel down protest go end the matter

If you were to be the driver what will you do?

Lets be realistic, The best line of action was to obey people with a gun. He escaped today another person might not be so fortunate next time
Before u people start bring all kinds of narrative, this is the narration of the victim.

This is obviously a case of the army blowing siren and driving other road users off the road.

They probably beat the guy up cos he didn't clear off the road as fast as they wanted him to.

If I was in his shoes I would've gotten beat up as well cos I know there's nothing that will placate the useless ediots in uniform.

Blaming the victim just doesn't make sense when we all know the soldiers will assault u the moment they set their mind to do so

But some idiots here still blame me for not arguing with sars that year
I don’t understand why he had to come down because the beating will be more severe
Let them blame you, shebi you dey alive to collect blame. The ones wey SARS don send to grave while being brave nko? Their family still dey mourn them till today

When you hear siren you rush off the road. This was a very lucky victim, Many have tried it and not alive to tell their stories

He is not the first to collect slap for not clearing road for siren, and he won't be the last.

Before they even reach his car, he should be apologising with good grace and humble body language. The only reason they gave him more than slap is because he was raking.

Where do u rush off to on a busy road? Didn't see where the victim said the sidewalk was also crowded?

If u watch the video u will see Keke moving on that road as well. Except u are saying the driver should've ram into other road users?

Actually it can be worse. The first thing is to avoid being in such situation. Second na to comply to whatever they say and try to calm the situation quickly. Any other thing can be accidental discharge and life lost. Dragging with military man na the worst option even when you are right

The other road users were able to clear quick, but he did not. There was a reason they singled him out of everyone. Normal normal when a Major General dey pass, the junior officers would have cleared that road and stopped all traffic for about 10mins before his car reach.

Its about whether you want to be right or you want to be alive

Where should he clear to? Inside gutter?

Since u know the soldiers will always assault u when they desire to, why then are u making it seem like apologizing would've made them "forgive" him?

If ordinary citizens would not be critical of bad behavior to at least send a message that we are no longer in military era; then we shouldn't be critical when they kill a citizen while they are assaulting him o.

I suggest the army personnel behave well and not go about brutalizing people over any slight issue. If he commits a crime they can arrest him and hand over to the appropriate authorities.

It is a misnomer that once u have an encounter with a soldier u automatically assume u will be brutalized.

It is not the victim that should do something , but the soldiers to behave well and not turn him to victim
I am not blaming the victim, but I am old enough to know that Nigeria is lawless, and gone.

Infact, I would be daydreaming, to expect a Soldier to behave, or any personnel.

The goal is to stay alive. If that Major had shot that guy, shebi we will tweet, he would be arrested and dismissed and jailed. Can that guy come back?

If you are expecting a Soldier to behave well in 2024, you just left me in a state of shock.

There was a guy that SARS killed at Mangoro bus stop. The story trended years back

Fast forward to some years later, I was in an Uber, and we passed that place. The driver then reminded me of that story, and told me he was there when it happened, because that guy was his friend. He showed me the lounge they were headed to, and the spot he was shot. Police stopped them, and in the course of arguements and dragging, the officer shot him

While we kept going, I started to ask myself...Why try to expect a change from a system that would never change?

If that guy did not argue or drag anything, maybe they would have extorted them, but he would still be alive..Today, he's gone...The Officer is probably in jail..But he is gone..

Nobody is a hero here..You can never be! Nigeria is gone and gone

Just stay alive for your family.

So it's everybody that will have place to clear to when a convoy suddenly appears from nowhere?

Na wa o. The way una dey always spin obvious things in this country ehn....U will leave the person that has acted the wrong way and start blaming the victim.

See about 3 months ago I was in a convoy and the combined police + soldier escort was leading our vehicle to clear the road. We got to a part of the city where the road was in very bad state and the escort were blowing siren to clear the road.

As much as several motorists made way for us, few couldn't get where to maneuver. It took two soldiers going to the front of the line to clear the junction before we could move further. Would it have made any sense if those soldiers chose to beat on the motorists by our side without anywhere to clear instead?

The country is lawless the best thing is to try as much as possible not to be involve with them because you will collect beating and still nothing will come out of it
Why not just avoid the situation and pretend or let everyone be happy

The only reason the beating did not last longer is because of the Major General; otherwise dem for even carry the guy dey go barracks.

In comparison to Naija Police, the chances of the guy getting shot is low-mid. The Nigerian Army will use brutal force than shoot a civilian during a confrontation. There is more accountability in the use of weapons by the Army when they encounter civilians versus Naija Police.

The guy did not drag with them na. On the contrary, they wanted to drag the guy and beat him up(Same thing they would've done if he had gone to meet them).

Anybody who thinks the moment those soldiers dropped from their vehicle they had any plan not to assault the guy, such person is joking.

I remember arguing with an armed VGN personnel during a football competition when a player of mine got sent off wrongly and it resulted to a serious exchange with the organizers of the event, it was my elder brother who dragged me away before accidental discharge happen. He said, do you know what you're doing at all? It was then I realized how far I've gone and how ugly it would've ended.
My advice to people is to avoid confronting security personnel because the worst can happen and there will be no commensurate justice.

During Endsars, there was a lady who narrated the story of her brother Chijioke

In this same country where James Nwafor is still alive somewhere?

“I killed your son and there’s nothing you can do about it”
One of the many viral stories was by a young woman named Obianuju Iloanya. She detailed how, eight years before, in 2012, when she was 17, her brother, Chijioke, was arrested by SARS; their family traveled to the SARS base in Awkuzu where they saw him but were not allowed to reach him; when they returned, the head officer told them, “I have killed your son and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

The SARS officer who made this comment, Obianuju said, was called James Nwafor. The moment she named him as her brother’s killer, many more people began to share their stories of the man, reputed to be reckless with human lives, a Chief Superintendent of Police said to have overseen the dumping of dead bodies in Ezu River in 2013, bodies believed to be victims of Awkuzu SARS. CSP James Nwafor became one of the faces of the murders of unarmed young Nigerians.
https://opencountrymag.com/families-of-sars-victims-speak-in-devastating-documentary/

When he got to the muddy bank, other people were there, too, trying to see if they could recognise any of the bodies. Emmanuel took off his shoes and waded into the water. He began flipping over bloated corpses. He did not pay much attention to the faces – they were already rotting. He was looking for a dull scar that Chijioke had on his chest, something like a birthmark.

He wanted his son’s body. He desperately needed a body to put into the ground. He needed the body for closure. The body was essential. His Igbo culture demands a body. He wanted his son’s spirit to rest in peace. He wanted the ancestors to know that he had carried out the proper burial rites. He was looking for his son’s body in a river of decaying bodies, turning over the corpses one by one until there were no more to turn.
