well, we can tolerate the sheepdogs antics of entering bus without paying, puffing chest over military uniform, and generally acting like entitled dicks - if they show their mettle when it is time to fight the wolf. but when the wolf comes knocking we see the sheepdogs deflate immediately.

Maybe it's uncalled for, but quite frankly I'm indifferent to their lot. I feel as much empathy for Nigerian military personnel as I feel for civil servants in any other government parastatal doing their jobs and facing whatever hazards in the course of getting their jobs done.

If these guys were self-respecting civil servants that went about their jobs with professionalism while paying the ultimate sacrifice, they'd be deserving of empathy and utmost respect.

Getting a federal government job na leg and before Boko Haram and terrorism made it very risky, was a respectable job that came with its attendant perks, after Uni I wanted to join sef, and it wasn't because I was exactly passionate about it, was just another federal job hustle.

Most of those boys are not there because of passion, na the work wey reach their hand, and quite frankly that's what it is, a job, and it shouldn't give you any more rights than another person doing their bit in service of the country, whether in the ministry of urban planning, mines and steel or wherever else.

You think if US service men start moving mad within the country they'd get the sort of respect they get, or if there's no counter PR by the US government to quench whatever shit they do when they go on tours they'd still get respect like dat.

Nigerian military is boys scout oga. how can a country lose territory for years within it's borders without external aggression but there are bullets for people displaying placards, there are bullets for communities because of disagreement over sharing formula from proceeds of oil theft and other innocents.
if Niger invades Nigeria today, they'd get to Abuja before meeting any serious resistance .

If it's a country where people were spoilt for choice yet chose to be soldiers, I'd buy this, but that's not the case in Nigeria.

That I'm not willing to join now doesn't mean there wasn't a time when I'd have jumped at a gig in the military, and the only reason I won't do so now is cause I have other options.

There's tons of young Nigerian men that'd pick joining the military over the joblessness they're faced with, and that's even with the military actively in war.
