So much tribalism on this forum. It’s the height of idiocy and ignorance to be a ‘tribalist’. The ‘tribalism’ you espouse was instigated by the British colonialists. They created language based “tribes” to create large blocs of internal division and rivalry in order to prevent us uniting to topple them. Then they had ‘favoured’ tribes in order to heighten those divisions. Eg Hausas in Nigeria. It was ALL deliberate. Prior to their invasion we didn’t have “Yoruba people”. We had Yoruba - SPEAKING PEOPLES. We did not have “Igbo people”. We had Igbo - SPEAKING PEOPLES. They were not united as groups. If a problem arose they went to war among themselves, one town versus the other, both speaking the same language. There was no sense of unity merely because they spoke the same language. Go and read Things Fall Apart by Achebe. A neighbouring town or village was regarded as a different country or society. SO STOP BEING BRITISH PUPPETS. Before they came we identified by our lineage, not by the language we spoke. Because people migrated all the time and learned the language and customs of wherever they settled, since there was no lingua franca commonly spoken by all and sundry, like English or Pidgin. Depending on your propensity for travel, you could be a ‘Yoruba’ at birth, and by the time you are 30 years be a “Hausa man” together with your kids after migrating north and acculturating. You might even decide to migrate at 50 years old down to the East with your family, and you would become “Igbos”. You would get there, learn their language and adopt their gods and customs. That’s how it was. In fact if you do an ancestral DNA test you might be shocked by where you REALLY come from. If you are ‘Igbo’ you might discover your ancestors migrated from Sokoto or Oyo, 300 years ago. If you are ‘Yoruba’ you might discover your ancestors migrated from Umuahia or Cameroon 300 years ago and settled in Ijebu or Ile-Ife. NONE OF YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE REALLY FROM UNTIL YOU DO AN ANCESTRAL DNA TEST. |

Its a pity you have to absolve us of our tribal stupidity and blame others for our idiocy and ignorance, when the truth is we are the stupid ones being tribal by ourselves. In fact, before the British, we were being villagebal, a word I'm using to describe the hatred for our neighbouring villages, as shown by the ancient and continued wars between Yoruba speaking Modakeke and Yoruba speaking Ife, which had nothing to do with the British, and that between my own Orolu Kingdom and Ilobu, ditto, no British. There are indeed puppet masters, as I repeatedly inform those advocating for Oduduwa Republic, telling them the likes of Tinubu would lead it and there wouldn't be Igbos or Hausas to check their excess, but blaming the wrong people for pulling our strings just shows how very irresponsible we are, and are not yet ready to heal ourselves of our stupidity and ignorance yet. Hopefully, we would not degenerate to rwandaism before we need to learn to love our neighbours and ourselves or what might be left of us. |

Ancestral DNA tests are causing so much mental recalibration in western countries, especially among their ignorant, dumb white racists. Many of them have sent off their urine for DNS tests and results are returning to them showing SUB SAHARAN AFRICAN ANCESTRY. Sometimes over 50%, despite their skin colour. Many of them have stopped being racists after receiving their results, and are even visiting Africa etc, to ‘reconnect with their roots’. |

budaatum:You are wrong. THERE IS NO SOCIETY ON EARTH THAT WAS DEVOID OF CONFLICT OR WAR. Should I start listing all the wars that occurred among ENGLISH speakers of Europe throughout history? Do you know that the English fought bloody civil wars among themselves? America itself fought a very bloody civil war when majority of its population were Irish. So we are not talking of wars. People can quarrel and fight, and then return back to peace. We are talking of TRIBALISM, which is permanent division based on language. It’s a totally different thing. |

The British did not invent tribalism Tribalism is a natural part of humanity, it is a survival mechanism... it is a by-product of civilization, in order for a society to be organized and function properly, people have to be placed into blocks and divisions, into classes and tribes, as the society changes - the blocks changes as well and the 'tribe' changes in the process. Even in the USA, Italians and Irish were not considered 'whites', they were classified as half black, but as more immigrants arrived in USA and blacks began to protest for their rights, the Irish and Italians suddenly became full whites and respected members of the society. Even before the British arrived, people had tribalism but the tribes were the 'communities'. If Nigeria gets invaded today and the invaders indiscriminately kill all Nigerians regardless of religion or ethnicity, the meaning of tribe would change very drastically. |

Kemetian:Tribalism is just one reason for war. And as you point out, tribal wars were fought amongst the British, and Europe as well. In Britain's case, the outcome of such wars whittled the hundreds of kings that ruled the Isle down to the one we have today. And even in my lifetime, it was not unusual to see house for rent adverts stating "no dogs, no blacks and no Irish". You may not be talking of war, but tribalism is historically one reason for war, as seen by that between the ancient tribes of Wessex and Essex, and what happened in Rwanda. That's how bad tribalism can be. The Kingdom of Wessex and the Kingdom of Sussex were involved in several conflicts, including: |

| Re: Why Your Tribalism Is So Dumb, And Makes You A British Puppet by danvon(m): 8:50pm On Nov 20, 2024 |
Kemetian:You know from a colonial perspective, 'divide and rule' is not a good strategy... The British were very stingy and didn't like spending money, divide and rule is a much more expensive strategy than keeping people united and singularly colonizing them. This is why the British loved Fulanis and the North, they made colonization easier for them because of how united and organized they were... This is why they disliked Igbos, Igbos didn't have a united single recognized ruler they could negotiate with / threaten / bribe. The Nnewis did not regard themselves as brothers of Onishas who did not regard themselves as brothers of Mbaises who did not regard themselves as one with the Aro Confederacy. The British had to colonize Igbos, community by community, village by village, installed and paid multiple warrant chiefs only for those warrant chiefs to be overthrown by women, Igbos made them spend too much money. Division makes it easier for an outsider to defeat a group of people but once the people have been defeated, that very division makes it extremely difficult for the outsider to rule them. The British tried to foster a sense of cohesion among Nigerians because they knew they could save more money that way. |

YOU NIGERIAN YOUTHS ARE SO THICK-HEADED, AND KNOW NOTHING, BECAUSE YOU DON'T RESEARCH, YET YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW. .............. HERE IS A VERY SIMPLE AI REPORT ON THE WHOLE ISSUE: How Colonial Powers Created Tribes and Divisions in Africa: A Tool for Divide and Rule Colonialism in Africa was marked by policies that disrupted existing social structures, creating divisions where unity previously existed. While African societies were diverse, colonial administrators exacerbated these differences by imposing rigid tribal identities, often as a strategy to divide and rule. This article explores how colonial powers manufactured tribal divisions, the consequences of these policies, and the lingering impact on contemporary African societies. The Pre-Colonial Reality: Complex Identities Before colonization, African societies were organized in various ways, ranging from empires and kingdoms to decentralized communities. Ethnic identities were fluid, and people often shared overlapping cultural practices, languages, and trade networks. As historian Basil Davidson notes: "In pre-colonial Africa, ethnic boundaries were seldom rigid. What mattered most was not tribal labels but shared social and economic interactions." (The African Genius, 1969) Pre-colonial identities were dynamic, allowing for integration and coexistence. However, colonialists sought to replace this fluidity with fixed tribal identities that suited their administrative goals. Tribal Creation as a Colonial Strategy Colonial administrators often invented or solidified tribal divisions to ease governance. These divisions were formalized through policies that categorized people into rigid ethnic groups, often based on superficial markers such as language or geographic proximity. Mahmood Mamdani, in Citizen and Subject, highlights this process: "The invention of tradition under colonialism was not simply the codification of custom but its re-creation in a rigid form, often designed to serve colonial political and economic interests." Colonial census practices played a crucial role in this. Europeans assigned tribal affiliations to individuals, regardless of their own understanding of identity. This not only reduced the complexity of African identities but also forced people into artificial categories that became the basis for discrimination and favoritism. Divide and Rule: The Political Implications The divide-and-rule strategy hinged on creating competition and mistrust among newly defined "tribes." By favoring one group over another, colonialists fostered resentment and ensured that unity against the colonial regime was less likely. In Kenya, for example, the British elevated the Kikuyu as intermediaries, while marginalizing other groups. As Kenyan historian Bethwell Ogot explains: "Colonial policies divided communities into tribes, which became rivals in the scramble for resources and political power under the colonial state." (A History of the Luo-Abasuba, 1967) This approach was replicated across the continent. In Nigeria, the British administration deepened divisions between the Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa-Fulani by granting unequal access to education and political opportunities. These divisions were later exploited during Nigeria’s post-independence struggles. The Role of Indirect Rule in Cementing Tribalism Indirect rule was another tool used to entrench tribal divisions. By co-opting traditional rulers and granting them authority over “tribal areas,” colonialists created the perception of a natural tribal hierarchy. Historian Crawford Young notes: "Indirect rule gave tribal chiefs powers they had never possessed, making them accountable to colonial authorities rather than their communities." (The African Colonial State in Comparative Perspective, 1994) This distorted traditional governance systems, turning leaders into instruments of colonial control and further solidifying artificial tribal identities. Legacy of Colonial Tribalism in Post-Colonial Africa The artificial tribal divisions created by colonialism did not disappear with independence. Instead, they became entrenched in post-colonial politics, often leading to ethnic conflicts and civil wars. For instance, the Rwandan genocide of 1994 was rooted in colonial-era policies that favored the Tutsi minority over the Hutu majority. As scholar Gérard Prunier explains: "The racialization of the Tutsi and Hutu identities by colonial powers sowed the seeds of ethnic animosity that culminated in the genocide." (The Rwanda Crisis: History of a Genocide, 1995) In modern Africa, political parties and resource allocation often remain tied to ethnic lines, perpetuating the divisions established by colonial regimes. Resistance to Tribalism: A Path Forward While colonialism left a legacy of division, many African leaders and intellectuals have sought to challenge these artificial boundaries. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana famously declared: "We must unite now or perish. Tribalism is a relic of colonialism, used to weaken us in the past and still being used today." (Africa Must Unite, 1963) Pan-Africanism and movements for regional integration represent efforts to overcome the divisive legacy of colonial tribalism and build unity across the continent. Conclusion Colonial powers manufactured and exploited tribal divisions in Africa to facilitate their control. By imposing rigid tribal identities and fostering mistrust among groups, they disrupted pre-existing social cohesion. The consequences of these policies continue to shape African politics and society, underscoring the need to address colonial legacies and forge a more united future. As African societies reclaim their histories, understanding the roots of colonial tribalism is essential for healing and progress. Kemetian:I feel certain that you can say what you have to say without needing to resort to rudeness and insults. Before the arrival of Europeans, we Yorubas were already fighting wars amongst ourselves, and here's you starting war by insulting me, which has nothing to do with whoever colonised you. Before the arrival of Europeans, we had already had the arrival of Muslims, who fought wars to conquer many African empires, which then resulted in wars between African Muslims and traditional Africans. But I guess you need to blame European colonialist for our own inadequacies for some reason. |

Here's what i found in just 3 minutes of research on ChatGPT AI ........... ''Creation of Tribes and Ethnic Boundaries: Historian Mahmood Mamdani notes, "Colonialism did not find tribes in Africa; rather, it was the colonizers who institutionalized tribal identities." This process was particularly pronounced in Nigeria, where artificial boundaries were drawn to create divisions among ethnic groups that had previously interacted more fluidly. Divide and Rule Policy: A study on British colonial governance explains that the British "kept their control over Nigeria via indirect rule, which allowed them to profit from the economy while exacerbating ethnic tensions." By empowering traditional rulers in the north and promoting Christian hierarchies in the south, the British deepened political, religious, and ethnic divides'' - Source: ChatGPT AI ............... Kemetian:You might as well have posted scholarly evidence that shows guns and whisky are responsible for wars, since divide an rule was just one tool with which you were conquered, which might not have happened if you were not divided before they arrived to rule you. Fact is, you were divided long before Europeans arrived. Lots of West Africa had gone through Islamic conquest that had divided tribes along religious lines. Our own Nigeria had gone through Uthman Dan Fodio that had nothing to do with Europeans. My own Orolu Kingdom had been divided into Islam and indigenous religious people who were constantly at war with each other and their neighbours. But your scholarly research seems to make you disregard all that and blindly blame Europeans. We are responsible for our stupid ignorant division. We were a house that was already divided, and that left us vulnerable to conquest by outsiders. And if we do not learn from our own complicity in our own fall, we will continue to be divided and conquered till we learn. |
