The House of Representatives has rejected the second reading of a bill seeking to provide a single term of six years for president and governors.

It was rejected by the House at the plenary on Thursday. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and 33 others. It also seeks to provide that, all elections should be held on the same day as well as other provisions. It was titled, “A Bill for an Act to Alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to create a single term of six years for the office of President and State Governors, recognize the division of Nigeria into the six Geopolitical zones, provide for the rotation of the office of President, State Governor and chairman of a Local Government Council among the Inherent regions and zones, and provide that all elections be held on a single day and for Related Matters (HB. 1511)”.

The Bill was introduced for second reading by the lead sponsor, Rep. Ugochinyere and seconded.

However, when the bill was put into voice vote by the Speaker, Abbas Tajuddeen, there was a loud ‘Nay’ from the members.

The Speaker therefore announced that, the ‘Nays’ had it which means that, the bill was rejected and failed to scale through second reading.

Good, if anything they should reduce their term to 3 yrs and see if they will actually do some work or not get reelected.

From 6 year single term, it will become 6yr double tenure. Same way Obasanjo who's now forming elder statesman tried getting 3 terms . Bunch of criminals.

Let them welcome the bill enough of spending 100s of billions every 4 years to organize sham elections, let it be done once every six years and concluded same day.

It'll atleast save us the money spent on elections every 4 years.

Prevent president, governors etc from influencing elections of other parties of people.

Reduce the stress we'll face to vote cos we'll only vote once in 6 years.

It'll even reduce the ammount of new vehicles gotten for every new administration.

Crazy politicians.

Any bill that doesn't favour them will not scale through.
Just imagine if you as an elected governor or president have 6 years to work and you can simply fight your godfather from the first year without worrying about him waiting for you for the second term election.

Also a lot of money are been stolen right from the first year in office to secure the second term.

No single term happening anywhere, so to hell with single term. Aso Rock will only be vacant in 2031 and when it Is the North turn in 2031 to produce the president they can opt for single term good luck to them.

Four years single term is okay. I don't understand the reason for pushing beyond four years.
It was like this till they reformed it to their personal interest... 4x4=8 according to Hope Uzodinma

Ugochinyere should reform the bill and bring it back. Cos all elections on the same day makes a lot sense.

It's better rejected.

Single term will make things worse since politicians know fully well they will not be seeking for reelection for another term.

Hence, the single term will likely be run with absolutely nothing to show for it at the end of such single term.
