The presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, are in talks to adopt a new political party ahead of the 2027 polls.

Sources told The Africa Report that Abubakar and Obi met recently, where they discussed plans to adopt a new political party in preparation for the 2027 elections. Both men will meet again in Yola, Adamawa State, this Saturday, November 30, where the former Anambra governor will be the keynote speaker at a ceremony in honour of the former vice president’s 78th birthday.

A spokesperson confirmed that the option of a merger remains on the table but did not provide specific details.

Since their loss to President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 election, Atiku and Obi have been having conversations on an alliance and the Founder’s Day which Obi would attend Saturday at American the University of Nigeria (AUN) owned by Abubakar, was organised to show that the friendship between both men remains strong.

The talk of an alliance or merger between both men is also hinged on the fact that the PDP has been in a prolonged crisis from 2023 till date and the current national chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, is a loyalist of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, who has staunchly opposed Abubakar’s presidential ambition and who openly supported Tinubu in the 2023 election. The situation in the Labour Party is no better as the national chairman, Julius Abure, has fallen out with Obi.

The report says that with election season expected to commence in just 13 months, discussions between Obi and Atiku are said to have entered an advanced stage, and former governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State is said to be part of the discussions.

If they're setting up a new political party in 2025 then their target should be 2031, not 2027. There's no way a 2yr old party is going to defeat an incumbent, corrupt party in 2027. It's just not realistic.

Tinubu will send some moles to infiltrate that new party again just like he is orchestrating that In PDP and LP. It's hard to wrestle power from a man like Tinubu who is ready to fight dirty to retain power unlike a refined gentleman like Jonathan.

I didn't vote Tinubu to start with and with his current performance, I doubt anyone with a functioning brain will honestly vote him.
Actually the worst mistake NIGERIANS made was handing power to a man like Tinubu who know how to wield power. At this point,only a military coup can oust Tinubu and I doubt our military are interested in that.

If Buhari had made a decision on a candidate Tinubu would never have gotten the ticket

Thinking Tinubu unless he wins people over to him I don't see the rigging that would help him

I really wish Obi can step aside because obi contesting is what's still given Tinubu some assurance

Let the El rufai removed him cos he is not even powerful in kaduna again. Stop making noise, am not a fan of Tinubu but he is a political juggernaut and a desperate politician who will do anything or go any length to get what he want. With kaduna governor and now Shehu Sanni, you think El rufai can't deliver his state to any party he join before 2027. The only candidate that can win Tinubu is former president Jonathan. Even if Atiku and Obi ran on joint ticket, they will still lose. Many people in south south and south west who voted for Obi, will see him as a desperate and not good person he claims to be. The Northerners will still vote for Tinubu because the governors expecially will want to be the beneficiary in 2023. Only Jonathan will command votes across all board. I don't even seeing him contesting again and with is closeness to Tinubu it will be difficult.
