You would get to Morocco easily through Senegal to Mauritania and then western Sahara.....the other route is through mali which is still closer than Niger.

A cousin of mine faced exactly same experience. He is back now. Was able to rebuild his life from scratch. Started a business, got married, bought a car and built a little house for himself.
