What Did I Do Wrong To Be Called Such? by IyaTola(op): 8:11pm On Nov 27, 2024
Dear Sir,

Please kindly help with the situation

I work in a Nigerian one man business and it a business where the owner is extremely 'aka gum' she hardly spend money for the business.

For example, the printer is bad and it cost 15k to repair yet she has asked us to go repair it for 10k by visiting the whole places in Ibadan for someone that would repair it for 10k.

This evening, the machine that was brought from another branch was faulty and because we know the kind of person the owner is I told the new employee not even think of touching it even if has experience about the machine he should rather send a mail informing the management he doesn't have any knowledge about the machine, the organization should go out and go find someone to come check the machine.

Just few minutes before we close from work a video footage from my boss of our discussion with the new employee was sent to me and the person which my boss messaged me, the message reads this "I am an instigator and a terrible person"

Please 🥺 what did I do wrong

It seems like you're in a difficult situation with your boss. Here's a breakdown of what might have led to this situation:

*Possible Misunderstandings

1. Misinterpretation of your intentions: Your boss might have misinterpreted your advice to the new employee as an attempt to undermine their authority or create problems.
2. Lack of trust: Your boss's reaction suggests that they might not trust you or your judgment, which could be due to past experiences or communication breakdowns.
3. Different management styles: Your boss's frugal approach to business might be clashing with your more practical or pragmatic approach.

What You Might Have Done Differently

1. Communicate more openly: You could have informed your boss about the discussion with the new employee and explained your reasoning.
2. Avoid being perceived as confrontational: Phrases like "don't even think of touching it" might have come across as confrontational or dismissive.
3. Offer alternative solutions: Instead of suggesting that the organization find someone to fix the machine, you could have offered to help find a cost-effective solution.

How to Address the Situation

1. Stay calm and professional: Respond to your boss's message calmly and professionally, avoiding defensiveness.
2. Explain your intentions: Clarify your reasoning behind advising the new employee and express your commitment to finding solutions that benefit the organization.
3. Seek a meeting or discussion: Request a meeting or discussion with your boss to clear the air, address concerns, and work towards a resolution.

Example Response:

"Dear [Boss's Name],

I'm surprised by your message and would like to clarify my intentions. My advice to the new employee was meant to ensure that we handle the situation carefully and avoid any potential risks. I understand that my approach might have been misinterpreted, and I apologize if my words came across as confrontational.

I'm committed to finding solutions that benefit the organization, and I'd like to discuss this further with you. Could we schedule a meeting to talk about the issue and work towards a resolution?

Best regards,
[Your Name]"

Normally you didn't do much wrong... Only that you told a colleague not to put in extra effort. If he can fix it why discourage it

The employer has money and resources (time) to monitor the activities of employees but no time to spend money to fix a business problem. The employer is not ready for business. Even Big Brother closes shop

You're a bad staff and deserve sack. Why discourage a committed worker from adding extra value that you're unwilling to add?

You are a complete fool as at today the said employee has been blamed that he was the one that spoiled the machine and as such it would be deducted from his November salary
