there's no law prohibiting it as long as I know. Igbo grooms wear the cap on their traditional marriage day. It's a traditional attire more for everyone.

Hi guys, as you all know that I'm a regular visitor to South east because that's where my mom's from. This coming Christmas, I want to celebrate it in South east with my mom and family and I want to dress in all Igbo native dresses from the "isiagu to the red cap" but I want to know if anybody or everybody is allowed to wear the respected red cap in Igbo land or it's only for titled men.

You can wear it as fashion. But don't attend traditional event with it if you are not tilted especially if the igwe and his cabinet are going to be in attendance. Either way no body will hurt you. Just a matter of cultural sentiment

It's not true.... No one is permitted to wear it till date...

U can see young guyz wear it for fashion.. but non can wear it in front of an elder in an official occasion where in his home town or not.. again . In his home town, u will b summoned and fined for wearing the cap as u have desecrated the cult of the select group of sect who wear it...

Look around more.. u will notice this I said... They have those for young ppl which is the stripe bended weak cap... Which is tipped with a cotton knob

The red fez cap was seen first as a military gear akin to wearing a camo apparel.

The WW1 and WW2 vets who later became titled chiefs frowned at anyone who wasn't a vet or a fitted chief wearing it.

It's another cultural appropriation and has no organic roots to Ibo culture prior to the formation of the British African Expeditionary Force.

Are the benue people the ones that originated the white and black stripes of their cultural attires... Did the youbas originate cotton material for their cultural attires....


U guyz headed by omokri should just leave the igbos alone... They still progress whether u hate them or not... And one thing is sure, there will still b igbos wen u must have been long dead... So I advice.. u concentrate on things that gives u legacy....

Why deny your Ibo heritage ?

Ibo red cap is another appropriated fashion that stems from the head gear fez cap that was standard uniform for the British African Auxillary Force.

The Fez cap was never produced or part of Ibo fashion but came about after the vets from WW2 returned from the British campaigns in Burma.

The red fez cap is another borrowed fashion .

World War II was fought between 1939 and 1945. If Random Nairalander is correct, we should not find any records of Igbo people using the red cap before the 1940s.

Now the Truth....

The writer describes the wearing of a red cap as the distinguishing mark of a chief in Asaba. [The sacrificing of humans as part of the process of obtaining titles in Asaba is regrettable, but it is what it is.]
