In the former there are state banquets, inspection of a guard of honour, 21-gun salute, extended negotiations and deliberations etc, and it normally lasts 2 or 3 days.

Mitterand did more than this when IBB visited in the 80s. Even some francophone presidents get this kind of honour. I stopped being moved by this symbolism after Ghaddafi visited Europe and received a royals welcome and then months later got bursted by the same France and Italy that recieved him like a king.

France has this culture of royal hosting African leaders but also has one of the worst brutal histories in Africa. The moment asiwaju realizes that France can't be recognized as a true dependable ally, the better it'd be for him going forward. What was it Mali, Niger, and Burkina and even Senegal saw that made them pivot from France?
