Tax Bills: I'm Neutral But Suspicious About The Rush To Pass Them - Dawisu by NLCreator666(op): 10:59am On Nov 30, 2024
I am not for or against the Tax Reform Bill, for i have not had the chance to read the almost 400-page document. But what I am against completely is the speed with which this bill is being passed at NASS. Why the rush on something so sensitive that can have far-reaching consequences to the majority of the people in the country?

Have we not learned our lessons by the hastily removal of fuel subsidy and unification of FX without defining clearly the implementation strategy, which plunged us into the worst economic crises in the entire history of this country?

I believe there's need for NASS to slow down and allow robust discussions by tax experts from across the country to carefully scrutinize this tax bill, and address any grey area that has the potential to further exacerbate our situation.

It's for the good of the Yorubas and the IGBOS

The only reason it is not good is it would greatly affect the North negatively

In fact

I am not Pro-Tinubu ooo
But that is a strategy that Tinubu wants to use to weaken the influence the north has on the country's economy
Re: Tax Bills: I'm Neutral But Suspicious About The Rush To Pass Them - Dawisu by festacman(m):
1. Ordinarily, there is nothing bad in introducing tax reforms from time to time to reflect the REALITIES of the time.

2. Basically, taxation involves corporates and individuals paying a portion of their earnings to support government, which made it possible for them to earn.

3. Therefore, the rational thing to do first is for President Tinubu to develop short-term, medium-term and long-term plan to boost the productive capacity of the economy. Unfortunately, doing this looks like a mirage at the moment. Tax Bill without fixing the economy will impoverish Nigerians more.

4. It is when industries, factories, farmers, traders, professionals, etc are functioning well that goods and services are produced and sold and corporates as well as people have money in their pockets that taxation makes sense. You don't put the cat before the horse.

5. Apart from obvious geopolitical reasons, the fact is that introducing Tax Bill is much easier thing to do than fixing the economy. The president chose the easier task.

Working with someone who is not on one's intellectual or physical level is disastrous and frustrating.

They are so comfortable collecting millions of naira per sitting while deliberating and prolonging issues that could be resolved in a single meeting. These senators and their spokespeople are selfish and only concerned with their pockets. They want to drag out these issues in order to continue collecting money, lol.

Initially, they claimed that the tax is bad and will harm them. Then Oloyede and the FIR boss entered the Senate to educate them. That was when Udume introduced the narrative that they are too hasty. Everyone was shocked. The same Udume who claimed they wanted to paralyze the north with the bill demanding explanation also stated that they should prevent them from explaining anything to them that day because they were not officially included in the order of the day. So the senator leading the investigation quoted another law of the house and ruled him out. A very useless senator...Udume is useless. He is only concerned with himself and his own interests. He does not want these guys to educate us on all of the implications. The days of using threats to get what they wanted are over. Guys now know how to reach out to the common people in the north also.

I do not understand what kind of speed they are talking about. Is not this the type of speed required to pass bills? If you have a valid counter-argument, then stop them there. Not that you don't have anything but telling them to just wait. Wait for what? Is it not the issue on which they are deliberating? So, what would you like them to wait for? Honestly, having unintelligent people to work with is so frustrating.

And funny, they heard it right. Lagos State is the main impediment to passing this bill, and the FIR bosses were surprised that Sanwo Olu welcomed them. Lagos is also losing a significant portion of their VAT revenue. They also said they approached the FG about releasing 5% to the states. When Oloyede said he thought the governors and the senate will praise him for his work, but they are the evil against it...that he was shocked. I laughed. What Oloyede does not realize is that they are for themselves. Lol. Dem no send the people they represent na.

As bad as they say Gbajamiala is, you should go to Surulere and see his work. All members of the House of Representatives received funding for projects in their constituencies. Go ask Surulere residents about the work that man completed. Why can't they also do same? Try telling Surulere residents that Tinubu will not return in 2027 and see what happens. Lol.

Tinubu is not my hero...but at least we have eliminated oil subsidies and the naira. Lol. Yes, we are realizing the value of what we have. We can now work on these issues. But everyone wants them to keep doing evil behind the scenes....but they heard it for themselves...we can not keep doing it. Yes, Tinubu was evil for attacking Jonathan. I despise him for that. However, we are unable to continue because the resources are no longer available.

What caused Buhari to leave and flee? Guy man saw what lies ahead, na. He japa!

Anyway, God will help us in this country.

Tinubu is not a man I support, but allow him to pass these bills. These are the foundations required to restore Nigeria to the regional system that we have requested. Allow everyone to go hustle for their money. Allow the south-east and south-south to receive a significant portion of the oil VAT. If the Kaduna and PH refineries require crude oil, they are paying the appropriate VAT to the people who deserve it more with this bill. Shikena. The north should work more on his agriculture...and earn money.

Any state that cannot survive should be merged back into the state from which it originated. Shikena.

Comedians. Taiwo Oyedele is the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. He was appointed and the committee set up since July 2023. Despite the fact that Nigeria's economic problem is an emergency of sorts. This committee has taken time and detail to draft this reforms. The executive has done that bit and now presented it to the legislative to work on it. Someone says it's not the right time, when is the right, best time to make Nigeria better? Are the reforms not aimed at making our tax system better? Someone says it's too fast, what is the appropriate speed for it to pass to second reading?
He sent in the bill over a month ago, and we remember the Northern governors reaction was in October, this is end of November, tomorrow is December. Should we be proud of inefficient snail speed to do the right thing?
There's still Committee stage, then third and final reading, then signing of the bill, then president assent, then implementation. Implementation is like the very very slow part for the matter. Allow the committee stage do all the work, debate and distilling. Why do the usual Nigerian sitting on a file for no reason. Do we really want progress in this country or just our people in power?

from all indications the bill is okay
Re: Tax Bills: I'm Neutral But Suspicious About The Rush To Pass Them - Dawisu by Olaide1295: 11:37am On Nov 30, 2024
The bill will still go to committee reading for weeks. Then will need to pass third reading. Then will need harmonisation from the federal house of reps.

There is no rush. Take your time to read it.

Re: Tax Bills: I'm Neutral But Suspicious About The Rush To Pass Them - Dawisu by WorkTheTalk(m): 11:40am On Nov 30, 2024
The fear by the north:
1) Allocation disadvantage:
The tax reform will take more money from the central to the states that have more economic contributions. In that case, states in the north will earn less in federal allocations. Remember how the northern senators fought against Resource Control bill in the past.
2) Tinubu's antecedent with tax issues:
Suspicion that centralized tax system could be an arrangement for Tinubu's tax firm and contractors to take control of tax system in Nigeria, just like he does with AlphaBeta in Lagos State.
Re: Tax Bills: I'm Neutral But Suspicious About The Rush To Pass Them - Dawisu by Zico5(m): 11:40am On Nov 30, 2024
We still have a long way to go in this country. Why is Tinubu rushing to pass the bill? There must be something untoward about the tax bill and that's why they want to pass it quickly the way they removed the subsidy and FX rate. Let them explain it thoroughly in layman way and let people see the transparency in the bill. Tinubu will burn this country down the way he is going.

Our economy is in coma, two of the quickest ways of turning things around is increasing production and taxes, I don't understand this complain about rush. The governor of Borno insinuated that this bill should take 20 years like the PIB did on the floor of NASS.

This bill will ensure that people who earn a million and below which is about 70% of our work population won't pay taxes and for some reasons it shouldn't be passed? What exactly is the colour of our problem?

Our elite and lazy politicians are against the bill because it will require them to pay more and also force our governors to create production in their states.

I am pro people anything that will keep money in the average citizens pocket get my nod.
