Not the way u see it.
ok, I'm not trying to say people don't spend more than 20m for a month but the rate at which people talk down on money here is annoying , imagine a plumber guy who is just managing life with his family in my street saying that 3m is nothing that he can spend it under 3 days, and he can't even open a store for himself to be selling plumbing materials like his peer do

For a family of 4 I spend close to 200k monthly on just feeding, we can no longer buy food stuffs the house because even if u take like 150k to buy food stuffs, u won't see anything.

I want to know if others are spending more or less and if there's a way around it.

Thanks
Good thread. State/city of residence, number of mouths to be fed (nuclear and extended if possible) are important aspects to be included.

If i calculate in months, person BP fit high.
Some days over 20k in expenses.
But i noticed that fuel is taking a chunk of the money.
Like a poster above said, remove eye from gen this period. Na mosquito dey make us on gen oh. Nepa nor serious.

As for me, i buy all the necessary major foodstuffs, like rice,(alot of times half bags) Bean's, yams, Palm Oils and Vegetables oils five gallon of 3 litres is enough for us for 4 months, sachet Maggie, sachet tomatoes cartons, salt's, i buy dried peppers in large quantities and ground them, i don't buy noodles even when my Wife complains, I just buy yoghurts and some cereals for my baby

I get these stuff's from depot's/warehouse or where it's been sold for wholesale or cheaper prices

As for garri (very much mostly internationally important) i go to the farm, most times we get a bag

When we were having light constantly back then, i do go to the slaughter house and buy maybe 20k meat and put it inside the refrigerator (not now again)

But truth is, i don't spend even up to 50k a month for feeding, because the basics are readily available.

My motto (actually i learnt it from my Father)

EVEN IF MONEY NO DE HAND, SOFA MAKE FOOD DE HOUSE

The one thing that drain's finance now is fuel, and I have parked my car and now I use the ever increasing transport, i don't do Gen, solar got me covered.
I need to get a Solar.... Bros, what's the cost implications

I got mine when it was cheaper, (225k) and it's not even off grid, it came with 3 bright LED lights and powers TV, phone, laptops and fan that's all. I charge my phone, they watch their TV and everyone is okay and satisfied, I paid on instalments. So I can't say much on off grid solars

To get something like it now will cost you close to 600k, I regret why I didn't opted for the off grid one though when it was cheaper. presently getting a decent off grid with battery, inverter and panels will definitely cost you close to or even above a million naira

As for the cost effects, aside the monthly installments i paid for almost one year, nothing else, they gave me warranty for a year and half.

To me, the significance lies not in how much money I spend, but in the joy and fulfilment we derive from it. I strive diligently to ensure that my family finds happiness and contentment in whatever I can provide each day, no matter the amount. It’s important to me that we cherish the experiences and moments together, creating memories that overshadow any financial concerns.
Crap.

Exactly....I second your last statement

This is the time to eat healthy foods and cut off all other needless ones

Your food now should be:

Vegetables
Swallow
Boiled plantain
Beans
Rice
Potatoes
Yam
Eggs
Boiled chicken/meat...no need frying
A lot of fruits

One need to avoid all this fast food junks.....cakes meat pile, fried chicken, ice cream and all

If ur wife is not working, go to the market urself to buy bulky essentials...most house wives inflat prices to get pocket money
. This part made me quarrel with my wife last night when I went to get garri for the family myself just to find out price of garri has come down since meanwhile they have been collecting high from me for that all these while.

One thing again, I'll advise someone shift to hot plates and coal pots when cooking Bean's, corn, Palm kernel seeds and anything that takes age to get off the fire, because nowadays even topping up your gas to it's fullest has become something else.
my bruh, you have everything plan out already in this tpain era, kudos to you 👍
Buying in bulk helps a lot. I tell people feeding money in the house is different from flexing money, don't calculate all of them together. For an instance they are paying you 500k as salary earner and once you receive your salary you will be going from one fast food to another, you start going from one bar, hotel to another then later you will say house feeding is consuming your money , that 500k is not enough to feed for a month, food stuff are expensive, " are you the only one buying the food stuff in the market " when they're done wasting their money on unnecessary things they will blame it all on taking of family. Don't mind all this yeye people
Re: As A Married Man How Much Do You Spend On Your Family Every Month? by mykalls(m): 8:05pm On Dec 01, 2024
Buying in bulk is a good idea but it also has its shortfall. When food is plenty in the house, most wives become wasteful. I bought a bag of rice, and was surprised that in less than a month it was finished. I had to go back to buying in small buckets.

We are truly in hard times. Sir, if you can squeeze out a budget of 1 million and buy all the dry ingredients in bulk. Thus, monthly, you would spend less than 50k on perishables.

You could buy Rice in bags, meats in bulk (half cow, full goat, etc)
Bulk shopping for 6 months saves cost.

Need I also say that a scale of preference needs to be drafted out and implemented. If I had a family, we would go minimal on cereals because those are actually poisonous to our bodies. That can be replaced with healthier alternatives.[/quote]

True, if anyone can't spend 20k wisely, he definitely can't spend 20 million wisely either

In this regime of tpain, one has to be prepared for anything, but most importantly FOOD, in my case, I don't even wait for the stock to be depleting before I top the petty petty things like egusi, ogbono, crayfish, peppers, onion, potatoes etc at work or anywhere i see those malams rolling their wheelbarrows with any of those items, omo i de buy with the small change i hold that moment.

We know food is very expensive now, but if we are talking that amount of money, it would be enough to get foodstuffs that would sustain a family of 6 for a month or even two. And yes Am talking about the south that foodstuffs are even more expensive.

True, am the one that eats the cold left over eba, i drink the half pure waters, but as a head of the house, you have to make it a rule and you must be stern and decisive about it unless maybe you don't know how painful it is to be seeing your hard earned cash in this regime of tpain going out like bet9ja visual loss, our people says, "NA FOWL WEY
DE LAY EGGS, NA ONLY IM GO KNOW THE WAY IM NYANSH DE PAIN AM FOLLOW"

My wife will rather leave it so I can see it, instead of wasting, omo the day she tried it, the house no contain anybody.

I'm glad you are well enlightened. If we understand the science behind beverages, cereals, junks and even (some) packaged baby foods, we won't desire that even for our enemies.

If possible, we should convert the space around us from gardens to farmlands. I know it may not be aesthetically pleasing to our senses, but one must leave no stone unturned in cutting cost this period. Rearing our proteins is also a good option. Chickens, Goats and Fishbare fattened using harmful chemicals. Rearing them would bring an end to this menace.

Don't mind that crazy attitude of Nigerians.
Most times you hear such comments from quarters you didn't expect it from, like from struggling guys.
A Nigerian artisan will give you a quotation for work amounting to 2.5m, for instance, and you price him 2m.
Next thing you'll hear is "Oga, that 2m is too small".
2m TOO small?! Nothing can be more annoying than that.
If you tell me that the 2m won't be enough for the work, it's a different.
But saying it's TOO small, it's just plain arrogance and so annoying.
And almost every Nigerian Artisan i have met talk like that!
