So it wasn't a literal preaching that he was doing at death and as for the spirits they are not dead people since the dead can't know anything! Ecclesiastes 9:5-6

Sounds like you’re leaning more to the Sadducee viewpoint.

Good ol’ example of Apostle Paul politicking to save himself. The Pharisees believe in life after death, while the Sadducees (like Somnvayina perhaps) don’t. Paul was a Pharisee and obviously believes in life/consciousness after death.

Acts 26 v 6-9;

6 Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.”
