Abia Communities Protest Over Proposed Airport Site by FreeStuffsNG(op): 11:16pm On Dec 02, 2024
There were protests on Saturday at Umuezenta, Umuomaunta Mbawsi Nsulu, by people who identified themselves as landowners from the eight communities where the Abia State government has proposed to build an airport.

The protesters, comprised of youths and elderly persons, said they opposed the state government using their ancestral lands for the airport project.

According to them, the proposed project will lead to the destruction of their farmlands, adding that successive administrations in the state treated them unfairly.

Speaking during the protest, the village head of Umuezenta, Mr Ukaumunna Echezolam, said that the Abia State government did not meet the right persons before taking the decision to site the airport on their land.

He said that the project, if built, would make his people lose their lands, which are their sources of livelihood.

According to him, youths whose fathers are still alive cannot decide for their communities, adding that his people still lack basic amenities.

On whether the community will reverse its decision if the right persons from the community are met by the Abia State government concerning the airport project, Echezolam reiterated that there will be no compromise.

Echezolam also stated that Nsulu communities had in the past given lands to the Abia State Government, citing the Nsulu Games Village and Ntigha Inland Dry Port (IDP) project in Isiala-Ngwa North Local Government Area, among others, which took a large chunk of their lands.

The Abia State government has yet to react to the protest as of the time of the report.

Abia State Government should please respect the wishes of these people. There may be other communities that may be interested in having the proposed airport located on their own ancestral lands.

The government of Abia will proceed with airport project no turning back.
There is always resistance whenever land is involved in Igboland but the community will later come on board.

Some people do not know that every single piece of land in Nigeria including where they built their mansion or where their ancestors were buried belongs to Government and it can call for it anytime. Once government needs its land, it will access the value of what you built on the land, not the value of the land and pay you. So if you bought a land in Bananan island for 1billion and built a 30 million boys quarters and the government needs that land for public use, it is 30 million the value of your bungalow you get, you can't sell land to government the owner because the land has zero price to Govt.

The villagers are primitive, they are not even reasoning the fact that the airport will bring developments to the area, rather they are thinking of their subsistence farming that they have been farming for years. This same set of people are they one complaining that Government have not site any developmental project in their domain.

This shows how pivotal the entirety of Ngwa land is to the development of Abia state, yet these guys look down on them.
Let Otti go and set up the airport in his native Arochukwu or any community among d Ogboo people and see if a mosquito will patronize it

Take away Aba, may, Ngwa land from Abia state and see the state crumble economically.

The problem with ignorance is that you tend to say nonsense thinking you have the right. Igbo people and this nonsense ancestral land thing will make them underdeveloped. Reuben Abati said so and they wanted his head. You also forget that land actually belongs to government in a way and it can be taken away. Your claim can be revoked. Highest is that you will go to court and government can drown you in paperwork for years until you accept their meager compensation. Release the land let it be developed pls. I wish they'd come to my hometown in Isuikwuato, it's just a little far from the capital.

the topic should be if Abia State needs an airport. If I am the president, I will ban all these proliferation of airports by state governments and government existing ones to factories. Nigeria doesn't need more than four airports to be managed by the private sector.

We should rather focus on interstate railway that will benefit everyone and aid businesses.

We keep building things that are not economically viable and we have a very poor economy. Over 70% of Nigerians won't have any use for an airport from birth to death but we keep proliferating them.

A high speed rail will move people from Imo State airport to any part of South East in less than forty five minutes

Do they really need airport in Abia?

There is airport in Imo, with good road, less than an hour drive to Abia.

There is airport in Uyo with good road about an hour drive to Abia.
There is airport in Port Harcourt, with good road, about a little more than one hour drive to Abia.

So does that mean the government have no plans for the roads.

Why build airport in almost every state an most of them are not really functional to full capacity. There are other things that would have been more beneficial to Abians than airport .

This airport crazy is becoming worrisome.

Why not the governors use the funds for the airport for some other projects..

Good roads, electricity, good schools..

What is the business case for these airports except as an avenue for looting??
