The contentious Tax Reform Bills before the National Assembly caused division among the federation’s states. While some are in favor of it, many are completely opposed, and some are kicking against certain parts of it. Several states stated that they are currently reviewing the proposals before making a decision.


The difference between the states occurred as the Presidency refuted claims that the Tax Reform Bills would make Northern states poorer and Lagos or Rivers wealthier. Dr. Femi Egbesola, the president of ASBON and the small business owners of Nigeria, supported the decision, pointing out that it is helpful to small businesses.

The states of Kogi, Benue, Delta, and Ekiti are among those that favor the tax change.
Kano, Nasarawa, and Borno are among those opposed.

According to Anambra, the Plateau and several South-South states are still reviewing the paper. Chief Edwin Clark, a South-South leader, has cautioned that the move may cause further issues for the nation if it is not handled correctly.


Orji Kalu, a senator from Abia North, expressed confidence that the proposed tax reform bills will pass into law despite opposition from some quarters and criticized the federal government for not including important stakeholders in the ongoing discussions with Senator Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West).


Tax Reform Bill won’t impoverish North — Presidency

Stating that the bills will not impoverish the North, the Presidency via a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, described the insinuation as reckless, maintaining that the bills will not destroy the economy of any section of the country.

Expressing worry over different interpretations by some political actors, the statement noted: “Since the public debate around the transformative tax bills before the National Assembly began in the last few weeks, various political actors and commentators have tried to obfuscate the facts, deliberately misinforming and misleading the public.

“Unfortunately, most reactions are not grounded in facts, reality, or sufficient knowledge of the bills. While some commentators have attempted to incite the people against lawmakers, others have polarized one section of the country against another.

“The tax reform bills will not make Lagos or Rivers more affluent than other parts of the country, as recklessly canvassed, poorer. The bills will not destroy the economy of any section of the country. Instead, they aim to enhance the quality of life of Nigerians, especially the disadvantaged, who are trying to make a living.”

I am not a supporter of tilumbu but this tax reform sweet my belle

It would make state to sit up and do the needful. When a state is not working and unable to pay salaries, the citizens of the state would not use bad belle eyes to look at the federal government, instead they would grab the state governors by the jugular and demand answers. This would make only people with innovation and foresight to contest for elective positions as anyone bereft of ideas would be eliminated naturally from the race


Furthermore, governors would try to ensure that peace prevails in their states as the lip service paid towards insecurity would end as only peaceful states that are investor friendly would draw investment

In addition, states would specialise in commodities that they have comparative advantage in producing. Plateau , Taraba and adamawa would want to invest in power, food processing industries and cattle production. Zamfara in production of jewelleries. Rivers and delta in addition to oil may want to open their sea ports, the west in cocoa production and processing.

It's funny each time I hear talks of the North will do better than every other region if Nigeria were to disintegrate.

My question now is why are the northern leaders afraid of a common tax reform bill? This goes to show that they have been lying to themselves that they can survive without the South. Shame.

Some of these states don’t seem to understand that they don’t have a choice. If for any reason this bill doesn’t pass. Lagos and Rivers will just continue their court case and keep 100% of their VAT.

Is this going to affect importation?

If they refuse to amend the bill and pass it. They'd wish they signed that bill by the time Lagos and Rivers wins their case in court. Since they depend on Lagos and Rivers enormous tax income to share. I wonder how the little left-over would be enough to share.

No going back, if you want any bill to be implemented in Nigeria, don't waste time on it deliberating and consulting with dead brain elites, because many things will be removed and many useless things will be added e.g PIB bill.

The people supporting this bill doesn't understand the implications.
1. If you make derivation the major basis for distribution of VAT proceed, then companies like MTN will be made to pay VAT in all States where their products are consumed. Just like other companies. This will amount to confusion that will affect businesses.
2. If you exempt people earning one million and below from paying income tax, then apart from Lagos, Rivers and other oil states, how many workers in those other states earn over a million.
3. It is the same thing with companies, how many of them in those other states earn a turnover of 50 million and above.
These are what the Northern states are saying. You want to suffocate them and you don't want them to complain.
4. Taxes, including custom duties that are collected by 62 bodies, you want it to be collected by one body so that it will be easy to introduce consultants to the process. How will all these work and benefits the people and other levels of government.
5. The Economic council and other bodies advised for more time and consultations to sort out these issues, you said no.
And some people are here supporting it thinking that it is a Northern problem.

You want us to wait till eternity for a bill that the economy will leverage on? We must not generate income to run the economy. The tax bill blocks leakages and make collection economical.
