Nigerian Catholic priest, Fada Angelo Chidi Unegbu opines that a country that has more churches than industries would remain poor, insecure, and ungodly. He took to his Facebook page to make the controversial assertion. According to the priest, if a country has more billboards advertising religion, rather than businesses, such a country had only excelled at religious merchandise. He noted that such a country would only remain poor, insecure and ultimately ungodly. His words … “A country that has more religious billboards than industrial billboards or adverts cannot be said to be religious. It is rather a country that has excelled in religious merchandise. Such a country cannot but be poor, insecure and ungodly.”

The man does not know that China, Taiwan, USA and Japan prayed to God to reach that stage. I doubt if the man has the Holy Spirit. |

He's right though, but the problem with NIgeria is not religion, but resource dependency. Resource dependency fuels the poor economy we have, which contributes to a sense of hopelessness, which drives more and more people toward religion and the promises it brings. As Marx said, religion is the opium of the masses, but what many people miss about Marx is that he meant that religion is used as an opiate to dull the results of a poorly run economy. That is how it is being used in Nigeria, and how it was used in many developed countries in the past. Once a country becomes industrial, the idea that man can solve all his 'problems' by industrial processes takes root, and thus takes the place of religion. Materialism becomes the new opium, which is why many developed countries are less religious. Being less religious does not guarantee development, otherwise Cuba and North Korea would have been more advanced than the USA which is religious indeed. It is a realization that resources are limited and the need to manage said resources to be able to meet as many needs as possible that drives development. Nigeria hasn't realized that yet....because we think that 2 million barrels a day of crude revenue is enough for 200 million people, when...reality check...it is enough for 10 million people. Meanwhile, government runs from the solution of taxation, because it doesn't bring in votes...and borrows and borrows to fill deficits. Looting also continues unabated. All contributes to a poor economy....and thuus more people becoming religious. Religious opiate. Specifically, Marx believed that religion had certain practical functions in society that were similar to the function of opium in a sick or injured person: it reduced people's immediate suffering and provided them with pleasant illusions which gave them the strength to carry on..WKikpedia : Opium of the people. But the truth is, religion is more than just opium. As it has been seen many times, having a society free of relgion does not guarantee development, and does not guarantee peace of mind. Infact, human history teaches us that the development of religion is the reason why human society went from isolated hunter gatherisim to large nation states. (As borne by the recent discovery of the structure in Tutrkiye dating from 10000 bce.) |

Economics is everything. Your personal economic, country's economic, political economy, environmental economy etc. If none of the above is worked on for a sustained period of time, then the subject will be poor, regardless of how many times in an hour they fast and pray. But again, religion preaches contentment, making followers not too focus to be wealthy, and desire goodlife in the afterlife, so? Poverty and brokeness in a religious society is not a bug, its a feature. |
