LordAdam16:
Nothing is ruled out.

And it's primarily because of Assad's military high command.
Pulling troops back to Damascus for a last stand is a questionable tactic.
Why would you want to be besieged from three fronts in a capital that Israel can bomb at will under the guise of targeting Iranian assets?
And if they're withdrawing easily from Aleppo, Hama, Homs; why would they suddenly switch gears in Damascus.
It's easier at that point to cut a deal and open the gates. That's if certain generals and intelligence officers aren't already on the take.

The tactic itself can be a masterstroke.
Like Putin letting Prigozhin march unimpeded for a long while.
It's quintessentially Russian in character.
But the SAA does not currently inspire confidence.
And Occam's Razor may be apt here. It could just be they're incompetent or they've sold out Assad.
The government troops heading back to Damascus may not going there to defend Assad but to deliver the coup de grace.

Some of Assad's allies are still holding out in sections of Hama, so the Axis Powers are puzzled about the high command's decision to consistently withdraw without much of a fight.
All Assad needs right now is two weeks without rapid losses.
Somehow his high command cannot manage that or deliberately choose not to.
We'll know which it is later this week.

-Lord
It's obvious they have sold out given what we have seen so far and the information coming in from Damascus is that Assad has fled the capital while about 2000SAA soldiers have crossed the border into Iraq to seek refuge.

If this is true, we can safely say the Assad's family 54 years dynasty in Syria have finally come o an end.

But many questions remain unanswered and the situation is even more puzzling than it appears.

What was the outcome of the recent meeting between Russia, Iran, and Turkey at the top levels? What deal have they struck?

I guess we will never know.

What would be the fate of Russian naval port and airbase in Syria assuming the info is true and that Assad is deposed?

A lot of things don't make sense.

The "Moderate Rebels" have already attacked Israel.

How long before they attack Turkey and Europe?

Continue cheering guys. E go reach everybody.
Take a bird eye view of the situation.

The rebel coalition is very loose. Only the removal of Assad unites them.
The template of what comes next can be found in Egypt. Libya. Sudan. Iraq.

This is not Afghanistan where one robust, resilient political structure replaced the caretaker government.

Iraq invaded Iran under Saddam.
The US went to great trouble to remove Saddam.
Today, Iraq is a client state of Iran.

The Muslim Brotherhood deposed Mubarak in Egypt.
They were violently repressed and today a faction of the erstwhile Egyptian Army controls Egypt.

Assad tried to balance too many interests to stay in power.
Just yesterday, Iranian sources reported that Assad refused an urgent Iranian request to deploy regular Iranian troops in Syria.
Iraq also claimed he did not request military assistance.
Assad has never authorized Iran to deploy battalions of regular Iranian troops. He only approves teams in advisor capacity.
If he could not get his generals to mount a defense, then his time in the sun is over.
He'll be given a villa in Volgograd and the Axis will get to work propping up a new power base that importantly does not have the decades-old baggage of the Assad family.

This is not the endgame.
It is the start of a new, very important, dynamic chapter.
We don't need all of Syria. We haven't needed it for the last decade. If we can't have it, it'll be a poison pill rife with sectarian violence. In the midst of the chaos, there'll be an Iranian and Russian oases that allow the Axis to preserve its interests, until such a time that a unity government more attuned to Axis interests is installed.

Al-Julani and Ghani can be assassinated.
It'll be too easy to do it and pin it on a rival rebel group.
Or one of their backers will send them a drone gift when they inevitably screws up.
So chillax: They are not a boogeyman. The Axis is calm.

I actually do not want a negotiated settlement where Assad retains some political power.
It's either he has the whole pie or he should vacate the stage for someone better.
He cannot claim he didn't receive inestimable support or didn't have significant independence.
We've done the best for him and if he is not up to the task anymore, a Russian plane is on the tarmac waiting to evacuate him.
The fate of the Axis does not rest on one man.

And even if I edit texts the edited text dont hold. It was not like this when I used to be active years ago.. Maybe something is wrong with NL

A lot of things don't make sense.
Southfront reported that Russian intelligence informed Assad of HTS moves in Idlib as recently as August.
I don't know if they're just covering their a$$, but it is believable because Russian planes have been carrying out sorties in Idlib throughout this year.

When the dust settles, we'll get more information on who knew what and when.
And what role the majors played in this debacle.

There are many interests groups in Syria.
The Axis can butt heads.
These are Sunni Arabs. Nuff said.
All it takes is a false flag to start sh*t.
So I'm not concerned about Iranian interests.
Russia should deal with the fallout.
They permitted Israel to inflict damage on the Resistance network in Syria.
They pushed for the negotiated settlement when the Axis needed one push to take Idlib.
They saved Erdogan from the CIA-backed coup.
They certainly added to the voices in Assad's ear warning him about allowing major Iranian deployments.
If they lose their bases, it'll be karmic.

Assad made a lot of strategic errors.
The lack of fortifications is the primary mistake.
A close second is denying Iran a conventional military presence.
Iran kept asking for it and he rebuffed the request every time.
A conventional massive military presence means multiple bases, air defense brigades, intelligence corps, tons of materiel, and tens of thousands of troops.
The current SAA is full of LARPers. The Arab monarchies permit thousands of American troops in multiple bases for a reason.
The Gulf War taught everyone a lesson. Arab national armies are a colossal waste of space. You need folks who wouldn't be negotiating an out when push comes to shove. An Iranian ground force would have made a stand, inflicted heavy losses, and bought valuable time.

Iraqi militias answered the call.
Hezbollah stayed until the SAA decided to withdraw.
But Assad made the SAA the tip of his spear and is paying the price of that unfounded confidence.

The SAA lost Palmyra twice during the civil war.
Both times, they needed Hezbollah and Wagner to recover Palmyra.
They walked out of Palmyra this week.
They left before militants were even in the area.
The militants rode in on motorbikes
So I think for multiple players, it just felt like the end of the road.
It is not sustainable to always import a coalition every time some barbarians get on their motorbikes.
We've been propping up people playing dress-up. Let Assad and his generals go with their mediocrity if that's what it comes down to.
It's the middle east, there'll always be new partners.

See, if the lives of Syrian minorities are threatened, there'll be militias pushing to protect them and combat the terrorists.
That'll be the in for the Axis to get back on the saddle.

People were paying lip service to ISIS until they started making snuff videos of Kurds, Christians, Druze, Yazidis.
Then a multi-country coalition came together to pound them to oblivion.

The Sunnis make up the bulk of the ranks of the terrorists.
Whatever they see, they should take.
Let them eat cake.

The time to prevent the carnage coming was before the SAA started playing hide and seek.
Now's the turn of the Axis to light a cigar, watch a bonfire, and add accelerants.
Then step in after they wear themselves out.

North Korea sent 5,000 troops to Syria at the peak of the civil war.
If after all that sacrifice and the lessons of Libya, they choose to collectively watch people who behead kids march unimpeded, then we let them stew in their filth for a while.
Syria will be fine. It's been around for millennia.

Ghost, terrorists are not immortal.

Yes, the HTS is a terrorist ISIS/Al Q offshoot.
But even in Afghanistan, there was a supremacy battle between the Taliban and several groups including ISIS.

In Syria, the terrorists will face internal challenges.
Which will provide an opportunity for the Axis to shape what comes next.

Assad did what he could. As did Russia. As did Iran.
His government is about done, so I'm not sure what you want the Axis to do beside operate within the new paradigm to protect multipolar interests.
Maybe you want to take time off to process the collapse. That's okay.
After Saddam's government collapsed. There were inevitable pogroms, displacements, and the rapid rise of terrorist groups.
But look at Iraq today. Firmly in Iran's orbit.

That can happen in Syria.
But that's not the only possibility. And the Axis has to prepare for the range of potential possibilities.

I'm genuinely curious to know what you think is the best way forward for the Axis in Syria?

On the Syrian matter, I have to ask....where is the once-vaunted Syrian Republican Guard that kept the Syrian rebel groups at bay before help arrived during the early years of the civil war? Why didn't Assad entrust the front lines to them rather than the SAA.

Btw what happens to Latakia & the Tartus Naval base? Will Russia still hold on to the base and tge region like tge Americans at the North East region & oilfield?

Anyway, this is a major shocker.

I think it may be too late. Russia may have the airport, but troops are desperately. I don't know if Wagner troops have arrived; even if they do, I doubt they have the numbers, and I'm fairly certain those Russian KSSO teams that wrecked havoc on the rebels are busy in Ukraine.

I actually believe that Russia is currently manufacturing more weapons. But that doesn't necessarily make it more powerful.
What the dunces here fail to realize is that Russian economy is already in a war economy, a situation where you throw almost all available resources to the production of weapons. The US and allied forces are not yet in that zone. The longer the Ukrainian war takes, the worse it gets for Russia. At the end of it all, it will never ever be able to challenge the US both on military might or economic might.

[b]Key findings on Syria

The SAR government army continues to surrender key cities after more than a week of fighting. After the retreat from Hama, the threat of loss loomed over Homs, Palmyra and Daraa were lost, the Syrian Arab Army's bridgehead on the left bank of the Euphrates was lost. Even the country's capital Damascus, where, apparently, significant forces of the SAR army retreated, is no longer relatively safe. Why did everything happen the way it did?

â–  The main lesson from this situation is that if you try to make peace with an enemy that is not going to make peace, then the fighting will resume with renewed vigor and lead to what led to at the end of November. After the Russian army literally saved Bashar al-Assad, a number of reforms of the armed forces were never carried out, as a result of which the Idlib terrorist group HTS and other terrorist cells, as well as other groups of various kinds, raised their heads again.

â–  Who is against whom in this situation and who has what goals?

HTS - supported by Turkey. Against official Damascus. The main goal is a change of power in Syria.

Kurdish YPG from the Syrian Democratic Forces - supported by the US. The main goal is their own state, independent from Turkey and Syria.

Arab factions of the Syrian Democratic Forces are supported by the United States. The main goal is to ensure the interests of their tribes. Some of them have already declared their support for HTS.

Free National Army - supported by Turkey. The same proxy terrorists under a more loyal sauce of armed opposition.

"Jaysh Surya al-Hurra" is a pro-American group from the area of the US base at At-Tanf on the border with Iraq and Jordan. The main task is to contain Iran in the interests of its masters. Against official Damascus.

â–  The level of command of the Syrian army remained at the 2015 level. No conscious conclusions or personnel changes were made, as a result of which a number of high-tech weapons, including Russian T-90A tanks transferred to the SAR, ended up in the hands of the HTS and other forces.

â–  Despite the fact that Syria became a testing ground for drones even before the events in Ukraine in 2013-2014, the SAR army has learned practically no lessons from this type of combat. The same cannot be said about the HTS terrorists, who, taking into account the experience of the Ukrainians, were supplied with information on the use of drones, including production and use, in huge quantities.

What are the prospects for the conflict?

So far, official Damascus has been unable to effectively counter the movement of a number of terrorist groups (the prospects of the fall of the capital of Syria are also clearly visible on the horizon) supported from outside. At the same time, contradictions are growing in the Arab world. Syria has difficult relations with Qatar, Turkey, Jordan and (now) Iraq, not to mention periodic military clashes with Israel, which further complicates the situation.

Probably, they want to fight another day because "it's better to retreat and marshal your forces than to waste a glorious death in sure defeat".

Obviously, the Syrian Army is very weak thanks to corruption, incompetent commanders, limited soldiers.
