I don't know if they're just covering their a$$, but it is believable because Russian planes have been carrying out sorties in Idlib throughout this year.

When the dust settles, we'll get more information on who knew what and when.

There are many interests groups in Syria.
The Axis can butt heads.
These are Sunni Arabs. Nuff said.
All it takes is a false flag to start sh*t.
So I'm not concerned about Iranian interests.
Russia should deal with the fallout.
They permitted Israel to inflict damage on the Resistance network in Syria.
They pushed for the negotiated settlement when the Axis needed one push to take Idlib.
They saved Erdogan from the CIA-backed coup.
They certainly added to the voices in Assad's ear warning him about allowing major Iranian deployments.
If they lose their bases, it'll be karmic.

Assad made a lot of strategic errors.
The lack of fortifications is the primary mistake.
A close second is denying Iran a conventional military presence.
Iran kept asking for it and he rebuffed the request every time.
A conventional massive military presence means multiple bases, air defense brigades, intelligence corps, tons of materiel, and tens of thousands of troops.
The current SAA is full of LARPers. The Arab monarchies permit thousands of American troops in multiple bases for a reason.
The Gulf War taught everyone a lesson. Arab national armies are a colossal waste of space. You need folks who wouldn't be negotiating an out when push comes to shove. An Iranian ground force would have made a stand, inflicted heavy losses, and bought valuable time.

Iraqi militias answered the call.
Hezbollah stayed until the SAA decided to withdraw.
But Assad made the SAA the tip of his spear and is paying the price of that unfounded confidence.

The SAA lost Palmyra twice during the civil war.
Both times, they needed Hezbollah and Wagner to recover Palmyra.
They walked out of Palmyra this week.
They left before militants were even in the area.
The militants rode in on motorbikes
So I think for multiple players, it just felt like the end of the road.
It is not sustainable to always import a coalition every time some barbarians get on their motorbikes.
We've been propping up people playing dress-up. Let Assad and his generals go with their mediocrity if that's what it comes down to.
It's the middle east, there'll always be new partners.

I don't understand these people, the US has no immediate reason to remove assad from power. Maintaining the status quo was ok by the US and its Kurdish allies.

Turkey once loved by the clowns here due to its tough stance on the Jews. Its president came out to openly support the offensive. Yet the US is the problem..

The only good thing is Syria won't be staging port for hazebolla and its cronies. Iran military capability has just been weakened.
