Let the war begin between REPUBLIC OF CHINA (CHINA ISLAND AKA TAIWAN) AND PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF CHINA (CHINA MAINLAND)
LET THE TWO CHINESE KILL THEMSELVES.

The name has serious significance for them. Both countries won't accept the tag of "China mainland" and "China island" because they both consider themselves the ruler of the whole of China.

Every country has a long name and a short name. Think Federal Republic of Nigeria and Nigeria or Russian Federation and Russia or Republic of Ghana and Ghana.

In the case of Taiwan, its short name is China. Republic of China is its long name.

But Taiwan cannot officially bear China because the People's Republic of China already officially bears China. So, it uses Taiwan.

The alternative is to use ROC, which is actually the short form of its name, but it doesn't want to use it.

Funny thing is that several decades ago, the People's Republic of China used PRC as its short name because Taiwan then was officially called China.
