Nigerian Government To Finalize National Policy On Bullying By Early 2025 by Editorialtimes(op): 10:35am On Dec 12, 2024
The Nigerian government has announced plans to implement a comprehensive national policy to address bullying in schools, aiming to foster discipline and improve the educational sector and society at large.

Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, made this known during an interactive session with Federal Unity College principals in Abuja. He stated that the policy document, classified as an urgent initiative, would be presented for ratification by the National Council on Education between January and February 2025.

Highlighting the psychological, emotional, and academic harm caused by bullying, the Minister emphasized the zero-tolerance stance of the Ministry and the Bola Tinubu-led administration.
“We are working in collaboration with the Attorney General’s office to develop a national framework that integrates existing laws like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and the Safe School Act,” Alausa said.
The proposed policy will enforce accountability for principals, teachers, and parents who enable or ignore cases of bullying. Beyond punitive measures, the Ministry plans to focus on advocacy, counseling, and sensitization campaigns for parents, teachers, and students.

Additionally, efforts will be made to restructure School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) to ensure a unified, nationwide approach. The Minister underlined the importance of collaboration with sub-national governments to achieve a streamlined strategy for discipline in schools.

At the meeting, Alausa stressed the role of principals in nurturing a disciplined and value-driven education system while also reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing skills acquisition for school leavers to boost employability and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad, Minister of State for Education, highlighted the government’s dedication to teacher welfare, citing provisions in the National Teachers Policy aimed at improving incentives and salaries. “This administration prioritizes education and will ensure the full implementation of the policy nationwide,” she added.

The initiative comes amid rising concerns over bullying cases in schools, reinforcing the government’s resolve to protect students and foster a healthier learning environment.

I hate to remember what I passed through in the hands of seniors in "Merchant of Light" Special Science School Oba, Anambra state.

May karma meet up with all of them involved

You don't even know the rate of bullying going on in schools. You, the bullied student will even be afraid to report to a teacher or principal because of the consequences that would follow.

Don't know if the rate is still that high today.

Way to go.

Many people think it's only students that can be bullied, but they fail to know that students and their parents, in connivance with the sch mgt can also bully a teacher. It's a two way thing.

Good

Many people were bullied with scores of wounds in secondary school.

Parents and warders can take it up legally now.

The mental injury from bullying may be one of the reasons why the country is a 200 million bed mental institution.

The average Nigerian is a bully. Small money dem go bully neighbours and everyone for street. Most teachers and lecturers are bullies. The police and army are bullies.Social media influencers na bullies. Even some mods here be bullies. The small clerk for government office na bully. The government like Wike na bully.

Housewives with young househelps are even the most brutal of this army of bullies. Their sons see this and practice the bullying skills they learnt on their wives.

After witnessing all these, the young ones in schools become bullies.

Most bullies have the same anthem in public places. It goes like this " Do you know who I am"

The psychological damage from all these shows with all the madness we see on social media daily

What about regular bullying from the members of the Nigerian Police Force? undecided

Bullying is a societal crime and should be handled according to criminal statutes, not according to or by the ministry of education which is tasked primarily with the education of the individual. undecided
