Shehu Sani Warns Against Misuse Of Social Media by Edygrin(op): 1:21pm On Dec 15, 2024

A former senator representing Kaduna Central has warned against the misuse of social media.

He cautioned individuals using derogatory language on social media to always be prepared to defend their actions in a court of law.

On Sunday, Senator Sani wrote on his verified Facebook page:

“If you are using social media these days, just keep a lawyer close to you or make sure that you have evidence for anything you post or comment on.

If you have to call someone a bastard or call a lady a prostitute, just make sure you have the evidence to prove your claim.

“The number of people taken to court for libel or defamation is growing nowadays. And the lawyers will charge you so high before making an appearance in your defense. A stitch in time saves nine.”

This is the more reason why our laws against criminal defamation must be strengthened seriously to give stringent punishment against criminal defamers and give strong deterrence against such crime. It should be treated with the seriousness like murder.

If criminal defamation is not seriously deterred, criminals will kill innocent people with criminal defamation while they are still alive

It depends on your idea of "fair chance".
Even if they won't let you prove it in court, you can throw the evidence into the public domain.

And don't talk about being gagged, if you are bold enough to make specific
allegation about a person in public, you shouldn't be too timid to release the
accompanying evidence to the public too.

No need hiding such evidence if indeed the aim of the expose is to sanitize the system.

Granted, if you are a nobody, there is likely to be zero consequence to whatever you say.
But if you are unlucky and your allegations go viral, then only evidence can save you.
