The lawyer in the above link was brutalized and detained for seeking the bail of his client. Going to the station with ur lawyer doesn't guarantee anything whe dealing with naija police.

If u notice the woman's story, she went to the station with her husband and lawyer, their phone was seized at the gate to prevent them from making any recordings of their ordeal and they had to part with cash to bail the boy.

The last time I had something to do at a police station, I was also told to submit my phone at the counter; same thing with immigration office, they don't allow u to operate ur phone for fear that u may record any of their illegalities.

How can anyone see all these criminalities happening and be expected to be a patriot by not calling them out when u have a chance to?
These are recorded cases
What of the one no one hear about

Na person wey hand never touch Dey form patriot. When hand touch Me sef last year, that changed my thought about the Nigerian police and the country as a whole.

Before then I was a very Patriotic citizen, that’s why I don’t blame people like her who had same ugly experience like I did
Gloriousgbola defends most of the ills of this country/gov most times, and I can't help but wonder why.

Nigerians care too much about perception. The funny thing is they don't try to change the narrative, but get bitter and petty when someone abroad or someone rich point out the flaws in the country. They know what you're saying is right, but they don't want you to say it as a rich person, foreigner, or a Nigerian living abroad "because you're not one of us".

The Immigration is actually different.

It is only inside the capturing centre that you will not be allowed to use your phone.

And that is because they need your full attention, not because of you recording any irregularities.

Just like how you are not allowed to use your phones in a visa interview.

This excuse holds no water at all.

They literally bring people(special candidates) to jump queue while u are patiently waiting for capturing. People do protest but there's nothing u can do about it.

They threaten to send u out even if they see ur phone in sight without u operating it. Which attention are they looking for when u are in an enclosed room and patiently waiting to be captured?

They are simply preventing u from capturing the jumping of queue and money exchanging hands happening. Na wetin I use my two eyes see I dey talk o, not hearsay.

It holds water.

If everyone was on their phones and making calls, there's a tendency to make errors or capture people wrongly.

How come the same excuse holds water in a visa interview for any embassy? They even ask you to switch it off, and we gladly do it.

I haven't seen exchange of monies in a capturing room. Yes, people are brought in after sorting officers, but it doesn't happen inside that room. Maybe you have seen sha.

But no usage of phones happens in many places. In less than 10 minutes sef, you don comot.

Just imagine!
A lawyer trying to get bail for his client, someone who understands the law was brutalized

Who knows if I had phoned My bro and he came, maybe both of us would’ve been in sanko since then

These illegalities are now seen as norm in Naija My countree

I saw money exchange hands after two different people were done with capturing and I also saw one of the junior officers giving one woman account number to transfer to for fast tracking her capturing .

That is my own reality at the Ikoyi passport officer. I even know the name of the junior officer , but have no reason to mention his name here sha.

Nobody stays on long queue to wait for his turn and them starts pressing phone when it is time to capture. Personally I don't have an issue keeping my phone away for the time required for capturing , but they make it seem like there's more to the phone stuff the way they bark at people like they about to let out their secret

I cannot argue with your experience though.

But the Capturing room is where you spend the least time compared to the other offices where you carry files like a Jambite.

I did mine in Festac, and nobody exchanges money there. Even if you want to bribe, you would have done it outside the office, where you can also use your phones.

That aspect requires the full concentration of both parties. If they make a mistake in any letter of your name, you cannot apply for a new one. You will need to do a Change of name.

That is X2 of what you paid for a normal passport.

Bros why will people not concentrate in capturing room knowing how important the document is and how we suffer for any mistake in our documents
It really doesn't hold water

How come embassies ask you to switch off your phone and you will do it, knowing fully well that it is an important interview. Does this hold water?

People press phones while driving, knowing fully well that they can kill somebody or themselves.

Maybe banning the usage of phones while driving doesn't hold water

What is unusual in limiting phone usage during a process?

The excuse does not hold water and visa interview is quite different from capturing at an immigration center .

Maybe FESTAC center is quite different from Ikoyi o, but there’s genuinely no reason for them to ask people put their phones away in an immigration capturing room.

At the Ikoyi capturing room , u can have 20 people ushered into the room at the same time sitting in chairs patiently waiting for their turn. U have like 4 cameras and 4 officers manning them .

When 4 passport applicants are asked to step forward and have their biometrics done, the rest 16 people will be seated patiently waiting for their turn .

While the capturing is going on for those 4 people , u have immigration officers keep barking instructions and telling the remaining 16 people to put their phone away. Even if u have a work related email or message u need to urgently attend to while waiting , u won’t be allowed to . They will threaten to send u outside once they see ur phone in sight and won’t allow u in again .

While u are patiently waiting , u will see them bring in one or two people who will directly go to meet the officers doing capturing without joining the waiting list . When u want to protest , they will ask u threateningly “ madam what is the matter ? “. That way u just have to keep quiet and allow since u have waited that long to make it into the capturing room.

They don’t even hide it taking money from those people they brought in and fast tracked their capturing . It is my strong opinion that their hostile attitude towards seeing phone on sight is to prevent u from making either a voice or video recording of the rubbish they are doing .

Like I said, I cannot argue with your experience, and I wouldn't doubt it since this is Nigeria.

But I think there is enough sense in asking people to stay off their phones for a limited time.

Berger to CMS is not less than 30 minutes drive. I don't think anyone here will reply a work email while driving. You cannot park for fear of LASTMA either. And the work won't suffer because you didn't reply a mail in one minute.

Many places will ask you to keep phones away for different reasons. I don't see the Immigration asking people to keep phones away during capturing as ridiculous.

At least, you agree with me that you can use your phones everywhere in their premises, except that room.

So u really think the policemen that collected their phone at the counter to avoid any recording will be daft enough to collect transfer from her for the bail ? 🤷‍♂️

They will most likely collect cash in order not to leave any paper trail of evidence . Even if the boy had written any statement , it will be torn to shreds the moment he gets bailed by the parents .

If she mentions the DPO name , he will deny the incident ever happened since there’s no evidence .

Still, she should have dropped all those details.

Go and check her Timeline, she's been responding to people doubting the incident and those who think she's telling the story for fun.

I don't understand why Nigerians always like to trivialize the experience of others and make it seem like there's embellishment in their story even when we all know how terrible our security system is.

Is it that Nigeria has so much happened to majority of Nigerians to the extent that they see these criminal activities as something one should not complain about anymore or what exactly is wrong with us?

There's nothing far-fetched about the story, so I wonder why the doubting Thomases...maybe na form of trolling sha.

If anything, the boy is prime target, a 15 year old ajebo pikin that probably looks 19 or 20, add the hair he dyed and you can even start to argue he was arrest-baiting...I mean is it not the same NPF that arrest 12 and 13 year old kids looking their age and throw them in same prisons with adults?

Npf really needs to restrategize because the kind of posts being posted and viewed by millions all over the world on X is not good for their image at all. But knowing NPF, I doubt they care about what any bagger posts online, even if it gets viewed by a billion people. They'd still collect their share when they see you offline. cheesy

Police arrested him for painting his hair. That is a "common crime" of young boys in Nigeria. Dyeing hair, braiding your hair, piercing your ears, having tattoos, sagging your trousers, carrying a laptop bag, carrying any IT related equipment even USB, having a browsing ticket in your pocket, having a foreign phone number on your contact list. Etc

Any of these crimes are punishable by Naija police the punishment can range from roadside humiliation, roadside billing, station billing, framing for armed robbers, landing in EFCC custody or even death depending on how unlucky you are

As a 12yr old boy taking our TV that my dad bought before I was born for repairs, I was stopped by police and taken to police station for not having the receipt of a Black and white TV bought in the 70s. No cell phone. It was passersby that I sent to my mom at home to tell her say I dey police station who came to bail me
