She served in the military for 35 years, constantly on transfer, so she’s experienced a lot of cultures firsthand. Mind you, I am paternally from Enugu and spent my childhood there, just like my mom.

My mother experienced the Biafran war firsthand. After narrowly escaping the Lagos massacre of Igbos, she and my grandma fled to Omoku. From her stories, it’s clear Omoku was strongly pro-Biafra—they never invited the Federal forces, unlike the Ikweres. She told me how the Federal forces entered Omoku from Ahoada, and everyone ran for their lives. My mom also shared how one of our family members who fought on the Biafran side sustained serious injuries during the war.

She often tells me about Ojukwu and how he commanded the Biafran forces that stopped the Federal troops at Uguta from getting close to the artillery range in Uli. people created songs about it. As children, they would sing those songs.she still sings the song to us
