The Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of Nigeria's former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently marked his 90th birthday, News360 Nigeria reports.

The decision was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing at the State House on Monday.

The announcement followed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Idris stated that the proposal to officially change the university's name would be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval.

The renaming recognizes General Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria's unity and development, reflecting the government's commitment to honoring national icons.

If we have Chukwuma Odumegwu Ojukwu University, I don't see why Gowon shouldn't have a University named after him.

But Tinubu should have waited until Gowon died.

When Jonathan renamed Unilag after Abiola this same APC characters sponsored Unilag students to reject it ..I call on Abuja people to reject this , let UNIJOS be named after Gowon

This is a very bad idea. University of Abuja should not be renamed to Yakubu anything for same reason it was a bad idea to rename University of Lagos to MKO Abiola University

You're destroying the brand behind such an established entity. It's like renaming MIT or Harvard - the names alone are already a multibillion dollar value - so it's a disservice.

Tinubu will soon rename Lagos and Nigeria.

To me, I feel the name should remain the way it is. Uni-Abuja is symbolic and more appealing to the ears than the proposed name. They can look for another federal university elsewhere and rename it instead of our Uni-Abuja

I don't know how someone who got his mandate through democratic process, will be honouring another who got his mandate through the barrel of the gun?

Gowon was a military dictator! You don't honour military dictators who came to power illegally through the gun. To do so is to encourage future military officers to repeat the same, knowing that they too will one day be honoured. Honouring someone who came to power through the treasonable method of military coup? A serious country would not do that

There's nothing honourable about Gowon, he caused a civil war by going back on agreement he signed with Ojukwu, his administration was highly corrupt, and he spent 9 years in power and achieved nothing despite the huge oil boom then. He couldn't even return Nigeria to democracy in 9 years.
